UMW Toyota sold 8,400 units in Nov 2024, 90k YTD

UMWT launched the ninth-gen Camry at KLIMS 2024

UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) ended November 2024 with total sales of ‘close to 8,400 units’. No Lexus figures were shared although they typically include numbers from the premium brand into the grand total. The year-to-date (YTD) total is ‘approximately 89,500 units’ at the end of last month.

The company said that it was a ‘strong performance’ and that the Vios, Hilux and Yaris were top contributors to UMWT’s overall sales in November. No context in terms of percentage was shared though, which is a big hint that sales are down.

We couldn’t find October’s sales results, but we discovered November 2023 figures in our archives, which can provide some year-on-year (y-o-y) context. In the same month last year, UMWT sold 10,263 units and the YTD for 11 months of 2023 was 97,705 units. With this as baseline, November 2024 sales are 18.2% down y-o-y (if we use 8,400 units) and the YTD number is 8.4% lower.

Away from sales, UMWT recently hosted the annual Toyota Skill Contest 2024 at its Shah Alam headquarters. The contest aimed to elevate customer trust and loyalty by promoting skills and knowledge among dealer personnel across sales and services roles. The two-day contest highlighted the Toyota Technical Education Program (T-TEP) and the company’s commitment to carbon neutrality through its multi-pathway approach. Cash prizes of over RM100,000 were awarded.

Sime Auto,UMW,Perodua ..easily control more than 60 percent of automotive market..so even if Toyota sales down a bit, they have blockbuster P2 and now BYD sales as backup.
We have a huge GLC group making billions of RM.This is already half a monopoly.
The other 40 % is attacked by so many new players, with Proton leading the pack.
Come 2025,competition will be more intense, which is a huge welcome by car lovers who have more choices.

I wonder if Honda took the share off Toyota or whether its the foreign brands eating them away, hurting both T and H. Anyway with Toyota now under Sime Darby a certain percentage of prospect buyers may shy away from buying Toyota. Perhaps from past experience with Sime Darby (Ford, Hyundai, Alfa Romeo, BMW, Jaguar Land Rover)

  • Toyota makes cars that are boring to drive and expensive for the horsepower and space they provide, no wonder the sales dropped!
