Fiat 500 to get 900cc two-cylinder engine in 2010

Downsizing seems to be the trend these days, and why not? Coupled with direct injection and forced induction, carmakers are coming out with smaller capacity engines that can outpoint their bigger siblings in performance and economy. Volkswagen was among the early promoters of downsizing with their 1.4-litre TSI engines, but Fiat is taking the concept to extremes with its upcoming 900cc two-cylinder engine.

The “New Small Gasoline Engine” will make its premiere in the Fiat 500 next year and will be used in the firm’s A and B-segment cars. The Euro5 powerplant combines turbocharging and Fiat’s Multiair technology that controls the intake valves to match horsepower needs. Two variants will be launched – 80 bhp and 105 bhp – followed by a 65 bhp naturally aspirated unit and a version propelled by compressed natural gas, CNG.

Fiat says that its two potter is 20 per cent lighter and more compact than a 4-cylinder with the same output. Naturally, fuel economy and CO2 emissions are significantly reduced, with the latter dropping “well below 100 g/km”.

GALLERY: Honda HSV-010 GT caught testing!

There have been no updates from Honda on its HSV-010 Super GT challenger since the first announcement last week. But the good folks of Motors Blog from Japan have been hanging out at Suzuka with their zoom lenses and caught these pics of the 3.4-litre V8 powered HSV testing.

According to Motors Blog, there were four units around the track, three with Bridgestone tyres and one wearing Dunlops. Pilots of the day were Loic Duval, Yuji Ide, Takuya Izawa and Yuki Nakayama representing Honda Racing’s GT500 customer teams Nakajima Racing (Epson NSX), Team Kunimitsu (Raybrig NSX) and Autobacs Racing Team Aguri (Arta NSX).

It’s such a pity that the NSX project was shelved – this car looks great!

Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk6 Test Drive Review

Many say that the Mk6 Volkswagen Golf GTI is “just a Mk5” with a facelift. It’s not; there are subtle but significant differences, as we’ll discover throughout this report – but even if it really is just a facelift, is it that bad considering the Mk5 GTI was such as great performance car, one that re-energized the hot hatch segment and revived the legendary GTI lineage?

Proton to unveil new design direction in 2010

Proton’s head designer Azlan Othman tweeted the above on his Twitter account a few days ago – it looks like we’ll be able to look forward to a showcase of a new look for Proton cars next year!

It was reported earlier this year that Italdesign-Giugiaro (which recently penned the Ssangyong C200 Concept) was hired to help Proton out with the new global Persona full replacement model and a clay model of the new car already exists at the design house’s HQ in Italy. They could also be helping Proton out with its new family design language?

We assure you Azlan, we’re definitely looking out for an announcement soon!

“What we didn’t want to do was take on new drivers” – Lotus F1′s Mike Gascoyne reveals all!

There are many of us who hunger for more insight into the Lotus F1 Team, after all this is a team billed as “1Malaysia” which means that we have a stake in it. But good info is hard to come by – those given out by the mainstream media tend to be come with PR gloss from the team bosses or even strong nationalistic sentiment.

Here’s an interview of Lotus F1′s Chief Technical Officer Mike Gascoyne done by www.formula1.com, the official F1 website. In it, the fiery technical man nicknamed “The Rottweiler” explains the rationale behind driver selection and how he plans to manage “the hopes of a whole nation” among other topics. He also shares about his topsy turvy life in Formula 1 so far, admitting that “no one wanted to employ me”. Good stuff.

Camaro exterior designer leaves for Volkswagen

The Chevy Camaro is one of the most desirable (and well known) American cars on sale now, and the genius who penned its exterior design has left General Motors – to join Volkswagen. South Korean born Sangyup Lee has recently resigned from General Motors to be Chief Designer of Exterior at the Volkswagen/Audi Advanced studio in Santa Monica, California.

Lee leaves after 10 years at GM. Besides designing Bumblebee, his work also included the 50th Anniversary Stingray concept and had a hand in the C6 Corvette. Lee’s tenure included several international postings such as the Camaro production program for Holden Australia; a joint venture program for Subaru and GM in Japan; and a project between Bertone and GM in Italy where he developed the 2004 Buick Velite Concept car. The Velite project established the signature look of current Buick products.

With this, can we now expect bold, chunky and muscular designs to come out from VW/Audi’s US studio?

Free bodykit for first 50 Hyundai i30 in 2010

Hyundai i30 M Sport

The first Hyundai i30 registered in 2010 will get a free bodykit that Hyundai calls “M Sport” (from MS Design), which consists of a new front, rear and side skirts, a black plastic cover for the grille, twin exhaust pipes and plastic mouldings on the rear bumper.

Hyundai i30 M Sport

Comparing the price list I have here, it looks like the full kit costs about RM8,000 if you buy it separately after the first free 50 units. You can find hi-res images after the jump.

Fiat reveals aggresive expansion plan – Chrysler to contribute big car and SUV platforms

After Fiat took a stake in Chrysler, it’s only natural to see some synergy between the American company and Fiat Group brands which include Alfa Romeo and Lancia. Now Fiat has announced how it will capitalise on the situation and broaden its product portfolio while investing more than €8 billion in the process.

The result of this will be a 50% increase in car production figures in Italy over the next two years – a very optimistic target. This year’s Italian output is likely to total 650,000 units.

To achieve the growth, Fiat plans to launch 17 new models and 13 upgraded versions of existing models in 2010 and 2011, revealed Sergio Marchionne, CEO of the Fiat Group. Chrysler’s first contribution to the masterplan will be an SUV that will be launched next year, followed by five new models in 2011 consisting a Fiat crossover and four models for the Lancia brand, including a sedan and a convertible, all based on Chrysler’s big car, SUV and crossover platforms. There was no mention of sharing plans for Alfa Romeo.

In November, Fiat rolled out an equally ambitious five-year plan for Chrysler (which brands include Dodge and Jeep) that would see global sales rise from this year’s 1.3 million to 2.8 million in 2014. By then, half of its models will be based on Fiat Group platforms and most will use Fiat Multiair variable valve engine technology.

The ultimate target for Marchionne is a minimum of five million cars per year from the entire Group, to be achieved by 2014.

Miss Australia Universe endorses the Proton Saga!

The Saga is the latest model to join Proton Australia’s line-up, selling Down Under as the Proton S16. As its name suggests, the S16 is powered by the 110 bhp 1.6-litre Campro IAFM engine paired to a five-speed manual ‘box.

Its drive away retail price of $11,990 makes it the lowest priced new car in Australia. Before launch, Proton billed the S16 as the cheapest sedan in the market, but latest currency exchange rates have given the S16 an even stronger selling point.

The auto version will debut shortly while July 2010 will see the introduction a GXR variant that adds dual airbags, ABS, alloys, reverse sensors and fog lamps to the kit list.

It’s clearly a very good deal, but since the Saga’s looks aren’t exactly what you’d call pretty, Proton Australia has signed on Miss Universe Australia 2009 Rachael Finch for some “look at me” appeal. She will be featured in all S16 ads in Australia. A clearer view of the lovely Miss Finch is available after the jump!

Alfa Romeo Giulietta: new photos released!

Alfa Romeo has released fresh images of the Giulietta ahead of its world debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Earlier this month we posted up three pics of a white example of Alfa’s 147 replacement; you can now see the car in red (a more appropriate colour for an Alfa, I think) and a view of the interior, which features some exquisite detailing for what’s essentially a mainstream Golf-class hatchback.

The Italians have an effortless sense of style that seems to come with their genes – Alfa Romeos (in general) are not only a treat to the eyes, but have really sweet engines as well, which adds to the allure.

For more technical info, check out our previous post. The gallery is after the jump.
