2016 Honda Accord facelift now in M’sia, from RM145k – 2.4 VTi-L now RM5k cheaper, 6 airbags across range

Honda Accord facelift 1

Honda Malaysia has officially launched the facelifted Honda Accord – the refreshed D-segment sedan, which was first previewed locally last month, makes its debut exactly three years and three days to the date when the ninth-generation was first introduced in the country at the very same location.

The Accord facelift made its Thai debut in February, and we first saw it up close at the Bangkok Motor Show back in March. Like with the pre-facelift, the locally-assembled car is available in three variant forms – 2.0 VTi, 2.0 VTi-L and a range-topping 2.4 VTi-L. The Accord is mechanically unchanged, and revisions are left to the exterior and some new bits for the interior as well as additional kit.

Exterior changes are led by a new front end that now incorporates the automaker’s Solid Wing Face front end design, with a large chrome bar linking the headlights. The bumper has also been redesigned for a more aggressive look. At the rear, the Accord receives new LED tail lights with triple light guides and a wider chrome rear number plate garnish, and the rear valence has been reprofiled with a full-width chrome bar.

Honda Accord facelift 4

Inside, the cabin layout and the double-screen centre stack profile is unchanged, but the trim has been revised, now combining wood grain and piano black/silver (on the 2.0 VTi-L and 2.4 VTi-L) that was seen on the Thai-market versions when the car was launched there earlier this year. The instrument panel has also been revised, with a new spindle pattern to help improve appearance and a new font for better legibility.

Changes abound with the i-MID and infotainment system. The 7.7-inch multi-info display and seven-inch touchscreen audio now comes with with Apple CarPlay compatibility (Android Auto when it comes along), MirrorLink, HDMI and WiFi hotspot. Unlike the Thai-spec car, there’s no Engine Remote Start – which allows one to start the engine and air-conditioning via the key fob – as seen on the new Civic.

Engines are carried over unchanged. The 2.4 litre Earth Dreams Technology engine – which replaced the K24 when the car made its debut – continues on with 175 hp at 6,200 rpm and 225 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. Output numbers also remain the same for the 2.0 litre SOHC i-VTEC engine, with 155 PS at 6,500 rpm and 190 Nm at 4,300 rpm to be found. Both engines are paired with the same five-speed automatic gearbox.

Honda Accord facelift 20

New halogen headlamps are to be found on the 2.0 litre models, while the 2.4 litre gets full-LED units that are reminiscent of those fitted to the Civic 1.5T Premium. All three variants also come equipped with new slimline LED fog lamps. The 2.4 VTi-L’s 18-inch wheels are the same design as before, but now feature a two-tone finish. As for upholstery, the 2.0 VTi comes with fabric seats, while the 2.0 VTi-L and 2.4 VTi-L’s are leather.

Fresh to the 2.0 VTi facelift is push-start ignition with smart entry, cruise control, hands-free telephone capability, a new two-tone 17-inch wheel design. The 2.0 VTi-L adds on an auto-dimming rear view mirror, automatic wipers and power-adjustable front seats (eight-way driver, four-way passenger), items previously exclusive to the 2.4 VTi-L.

Safety-wise, all Accord facelift models now come with six airbags – previously only available on the 2.4 VTi-L – to go with the ABS with EBD and brake assist, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Hill Start Assist (HSA) and rear ISOFIX child seat mounts that was already offered as standard. Another feature that was used to be reserved for the 2.4 VTi-L, the Honda LaneWatch blind-spot camera, is now fitted to the 2.0 VTi-L as well.

In a nutshell, here’s what’s on the cars:

The remaining two colours are the familiar Modern Steel Metallic and Crystal Black Pearl.

Finally, pricing. The Honda Accord 2.0 VTi goes for RM144,800, while the 2.0 VTi-L retails for RM153,800. The range-topping 2.4 VTi-L, meanwhile, is now cheaper by RM5,000 – mostly through ditching the previous car’s navigation system – going for RM172,800. All prices are on-the-road with insurance.

Exactly. For the 2.4L, they have no choice but to put down the price slightly lower than Camry. Anyway, who is going to buy this 2.4 compared with the Camry 2.5L hybrid? technology and output too much far away.

      • Wow, up to RM5k cheaper for the 2.4l just by omitting navigation software? Since when did navigation software even cost more than RM1k to begin with?

Plus it is 2016, people rather use Google Maps or Waze with real time traffic data, hence the rise of Android Auto and Apple Car Play. But credit to Honda who managed to sucker money from customers last time by inflating pricing because ada navigation.

Where is Najib’s promise to reduce car prices? Rm170k and RM145k is so expensive and unaffordable to most people. 3 years already I am waiting for Najib to honour his promise to reduce our car prices.

It is a well known fact, Malaysia has the highest car prices in the world. It is much higher than even Singapore if one considers that Singapore has one of the highest GDP per capita in the world.

How long must we wait for Najib to reduce car prices as promised by him to 30% lower levels?

  • When the Accord first debut, it was quite the leader of the pack. But the introduction of the new Camry hybrid, 6 and new Sonata have manage to aged the big H quite abit and the facelift doesn’t seems to help it much. The much more youthful Civic may seem a much better proposition to those who are looking for something fresh. Changes also seems to be small and nothing to shout about……

Also does the aluminum bonnet made it to Malaysia? I did recall Thailand received that treatment. And the drop in price of the 2.4 seems to raise suspicion of a possible introduction of a hybrid. The RM180k – RM200k seems to be perfect spot for the Accord hybrid to sit and battle against similarly priced D-segment such as the Mondeo, 6 2.5 and the Camry hybrid, which seems to be omnipresent on Malaysian roads, I struggle to find a Naturally aspirated Camry facelift on the road now.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 14 Thumb down 4
    • Tot that CKD Hybrid will be much cheaper because the incentive for EEV/Hybrid CKD here in MY. RM180K-200K? Damn.. is the EEV/Hybrid incentive really works here? Can PT or anybody give some explanation on this? Because some manufacturer can drop price for plenty of K, but for the Japs, it is costlier to own the hybrid even it is CKD.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 4 Thumb down 1
      • The incentives are unclear. There’s never really much guideline on how much the government can/will help, is more of a “I help you, you help me” kind of deal. Also I can’t possibly see the hybrid being cheaper. Mechanically, it is a superior car to the naturally aspirated unit and a lot more advance. The powertrain is more EV than petrol unlike the Camry hybrid, and the only car to exist with such mechanical layout is the 1400hp koenigsegg Agera.

Most manufacturer even the Germans have enough to differentiate their hybrids and their normal cars. Both BMW and Mercedes hybrid slots their hybrid in the middle of the range when it comes to performance while Japanese hybrid cars occupy the range topper, hence the price difference. You can argue that the the hybrid accord is also middle range because the range topping V6, which would cost RM240k from previous records, which would make a RM180-190k a bargain.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 4 Thumb down 1
        • But there is no difference in Volvo XC90 CBU and CKD. But the price difference is wow.. not to mention the X5 and I don’t think the incentive only apply for those lux car. Are we customer can report this to MyCC if this company are ‘kerjasama’ in fixing the CKD hybrid? This happen to MAS and Airasia before I think.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 3 Thumb down 0
      • Here’s a hint: Jazz hybrid is cheaper than normal jazz. So a CKD EEV hybrid can be cheaper than normal CKD model based on the tax scheme.
So ask urself, where did the price difference go to?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 6 Thumb down 0
        • The old CKD Jazz hybrid was never cheaper than the CKD Jazz N/A. Yes it was cheaper than the CBU Jazz N/A(RM99k) but not the CKD Jazz that was priced at RM74k while the electric motor aided counterpart sits at RM89k. The clear and define tax examption for hybrids is set to expire by end of this year so it makes no sense re-tooling factories to accommodate production of a car that has no define future in the lineup. Honda’s only method is through the governments EEV incentive which I have stated, has no clear define rules and incentive and Is determine through table talks and negotiations(add some probable under table transactions)

Add to that, how in the world would Honda move N/A units out of the showroom if they slot the mechanically superior Hybrid cheaper.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 6 Thumb down 1
          • Thats cuz MY EEV not just apply for the vehicle itself but oso how much energy efficient to manufacture/ assemble. Different factories and level of operations will effect differently. Thats why Biza can get EEV cert, cuz it being assembled at P2 new EEV compliant factory.
Its a more holistic & thorough approach that looks at the overall picture, thou having no incentives is a bummer.

True what a letdown, they did improve by giving HID & LED’s standard on 2015 CR-V facelift, and then when 2016 civic launched they decided to give halogens again!!

You mean you can buy it for 30/40k less with the same spec! Honda will never let it happen in this 3 years time unless Honda launched it’s 10th generation with proper transmission like CVT or dual-clutch gear box. I’m sure many are disappointed with it’s transmission.

That would be probably in 2018 and provided Proton is still around by then. Hahaha!

I thought the reason Honda Malaysia is taking a long time to launch the facelift Accord is to equip the car with CVT so that they can meet the EEV requirements thus making the car cheaper. This is already proven in China where the same 2.0L SOHC fitted with the CVT could meet 7.0L/100km. Oh well…

  • I hope P1 will start talking to Honda to rebadge their pre-facelift accord. Drop the price close to 100k for 2.4. Then we know who is the winner..

My 2016 KIA FL has all the 2.4 model features. Plus more missing features like cooled seats, infinity surround sound, piano pedal, and more more more….but anytime cheaper than this piece of junk..Yeah low resale value but who cares..I dont want a Honda that may kill me on the way to sell my car 5 years later..*TAKATATATATA airbag…i rather keep a low value car but happy and still ALIVE end of the day…By the way…they need a women with buldge to sell that junk…Hello!..i want to buy car lah not to see your cinapek buldged models or sales girls who dont even know what is TAKATATATATA….

    Jun yong is hot. There.

    And.

Its bizzare to say the least. An engine that’s 4 years old. If you buy this car, wait 4 years and sell, you’ll be sitting with 8 year old tech. Wait, but its still a NA 2.4 SOHC unit. In 1980, there was an Accord with a NA 2.4 SOHC (to those who’ll go dig up their old newspapers and tell me its in fact 1982 and it was 2,398cc, had no overhead cam, etc etc, please get a life). In 1980, there were cars with halogen bulbs, no active safety, no LED, no hybrid tech, no regenerative braking, no forced induction, I could go on and on.

but the question is not why Honda is selling this. The question is why are people buying this?
    A. Malaysians are stupid.
    B. See A.

Malaysians are overly obsessed with the Honda Brand name. Blinded by Honda’s Powerful brand image and design for most people.
They don’t realize whats under the hood. The Hideous Current Jazz for example is fitted with the outdated 2009 engine and no Lanewatch Camera, RS or Official Mugen parts option available compared to Indonesia, Japan, America and even New Zealand. The Management team in Honda Malaysia is among the worst in the world. A bunch of ripoffs in the car industry. They should be charged in court for Customer Fraud. In their minds, they think we Malaysians are blind fools.
In reality,so many specs and equipment are NOT included in the Malaysian Honda cars but they cheat customers to buy by charging expensive prices with outdated parts.
After comparing with its rivals, personally I’d rather buy Honda’s competitors models with up to date equipment.
      No offence to everyone here.

very true. Check out Youtube to see how Honda cheats CRV buyers. CRV has been shown to be only 2WD even though sold as 4WD. Absolute fraud.

Betul la bro, saya baru cancel booking untuk Jazz Grade V(besi buruk) saya. Bodoh Celaka punya Honda Malaysia. Tipu rakyat Malaysia.
Saya semak laman web Honda New Zealand, diorang ada Model Mugen Jazz RS limited dgn Original Mugen parts untuk Jazz GK generasi terkini.
Kalau kat Malaysia, lanewatch camera, reverse camera, LED headlights not included. What the HELL?
Bodoh, Penipu punya Honda Malaysia Management Team. Baik buka kes penipuan di Mahkamah.

    • The 2.4L is the latest EarthDreams engine. DOHC not SOHC. Only the 2.0L variant is SOHC.
IF 4 years old engine is old, what about the Vios’s 1NZ-FE engine which begins selling here in year 2004 until today ???

Vios is crap. Accord 2.0 and 2.4 is crap. For value, go Korean. For resale value, Koreans are now on par. Go see sonata second hand value for proof. Ford, Mazda, also offer much better and newer tech. But if wanna stay stupid, i don’t mind. I don’t judge. Just stating facts.

Should have ditch the 2.4L engine for a 1.5L Turbo and the same CVT gearbox from the Civic. You get much cheaper roadtax and better fuel economy besides better low-end torque from the turbo. Plus the smooth CVT gearbox seems more suitable for D segment.

PT, 2 corrections to Carbase info on the Accord:
    1. From the presentation slides for this facelift, there are rear fog lamps
    2. Although the initial ANCAP test resulted in 4 star rating, Honda has since made improvements to the structure and it was retested to achieve 5 star rating

As usual Honda use inferior SOHC engine for 2.0 model to get bigger profit. If SOHC is so good, why they use better DOHC engine for 2.4 model instead?

Most of Honda cars are using SOHC engines for many years which means they had shortchanged people around the world with inferior goods & now air bag problems.

Currently own the pre-FL version.. besides the 6 airbags (which is a huge improvement) and to certain extent the better headunit, I’m glad that I didnt wait for this FL.

This version to me looks very “ricey”…

Honda Accord is an OUTDATED car with only 5 speed gear box, prices should be much much lower. Only for those not wise person to buy. Most car have 6 – 7 speed onwards.

    Dear Paultan.org,
Can you do us a favor? When reviewing any car, please stick to one: either HP, PS or kW. Don’t mix.

“The 2.4 litre Earth Dreams Technology engine – which replaced the K24 when the car made its debut – continues on with 175 hp at 6,200 rpm and 225 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. Output numbers also remain the same for the 2.0 litre SOHC i-VTEC engine, with 155 PS at 6,500 rpm and 190 Nm at 4,300 rpm to be found.”

I cannot believe that basic safety on a luxury car, is still a selling point for the ASEAN Market. More than 2 Airbags and advanced safety features has been the norm in EU and US markets since the early 2000’s.
