Hyundai Motor unveils new 1.6L Kappa GDI engine, eight-speed automatic transmission for FWD models

Hyundai Motor has recently announced the introduction of a new “hybrid dedicated” 1.6 litre Kappa GDI engine as well as an eight-speed automatic transmission slated for use in its future front-wheel drive (FWD) models. On the subject of the new engine, we can expect Hyundai’s Prius-rivalling AE hybrid to be the one of the first few models to be equipped with said mill – the engine will arrive in 2016, the same time as the AE.

According to Hyundai, the new 1.6 litre GDI Kappa engine is “designed to to boost power, performance and fuel economy, while driving down production costs and CO2 emissions in the growing mid-class hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) segments.”

It marks the first time the company has produced an engine that combines the Atkinson cycle, cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology and a long stroke specification for optimum thermal efficiency. As a result, the new engine is said to register a 3% improvement in terms of fuel efficiency and an engine thermal efficiency rating of 40%.

The new engine features a “six-hole laser-drilled GDI injector” along with a high-pressure fuel injection system (maximum 200 bar) to ensure maximum performance with reduced emissions and lower fuel consumption. As a result, the new mill pumps out a total of 105 PS and 147 Nm of torque.

Moving on, the Korean carmaker has also revealed its new eight-speed automatic transmission for its future FWD models – said gearbox is expected to serve alongside Hyundai’s Lambda, Theta turbo GDI, and R family of engines. The new eight-speed auto is said to boast 7.3% drop in fuel consumption over the current six-speeder. Overall weight has also been reduced by 3.5 kg over the older transmission.

Improvements over the current six-speed unit comes courtesy of an additional clutch over the aforementioned gearbox. Also, a direct control valve body that enables “solenoid control of the clutch directly rather than via several valves” reduces oil leakage and improves shift operations.

The Vios engine can perform better than this junk. Combine with the silky smooth 4 speed gearbox, the fuel consumption is also better than this kimchi hybrid.

Only brainless idiot will buy this hybrid junk that got no RV. Please work harder to reward yourself with a true sushi car, the Toyota Vios. Hassle free ownership experience and in return with the good RV when you upgrade to the Altis or Camry next.

The ‘new’ taik vios can perform worse than this ‘so-called’ junk kimchi. Combine with the ‘dinasour’ 4 speed gearbox, the fuel consumption is also even worse than camtakpro engine.

Only brainless idiot will buy ‘brand new’ Toyotaik junk from a sucker junk car distributor that got hailat RV, good to none safety count as well as very low equipment level at sky high price. Please work harder to reward yourself with a true sushi car, either the Mazda (style and design), Nissan (comfort and pretty reliable) or Honda (RV and after sales network). Hassle free ownership experience and in return with the acceptable RV when you upgrade later. For brand new Toyotaik jamban cars, my advise is, better continue use an old and faithful cars or even a ‘not really good’ Protong than a brand new taik car from UMW Toyotaik.

Oh some one mentioned me. So far nobody can win camtakpro fuel consumption.
        1.6L with FC like 2.4L.
        1.3L with FC like 1.8L.

Have to wait few more iterations for the Korean fancy new things to stabilize. Kappapride.

This afternoon I saw a latest generation Vios stranded at the side of the road with its bonnet up and emergency signals on. The driver have that puzzled + pissed off looks on his face. Not even a year old car looking at the registration numbers.

Maybe it’s an isolated incident, but it definitely show that no car is totally reliable. And looks like what people said about the Vios build quality being worse than the previous generations have some truth to it.

It was mentioned that it is an Atkinson cycle engine. Do not compare with Vios conventional engine. The Lexus CT200h 1.8L Atkinson cycle engine puts out only 98hp and 142Nm torque. Only when combined with the electric motor it manages 134hp and 207Nm.

Knowing to the usual Korean paper spec, it will be less than reported.

But still, it is good to have competition in this hybrid realm. Bored to keep seeing only SynergyDrive cloned everywhere.

Nobody cares about Atkinson cycle or Michaeljackson cycle, most importantly is the fuel consumption and the reliability of the engine.

1NZ-FE proven to be the best and reliable.
