After controversy arose over the lane separators installed on the Kuala Lumpur bicycle lanes, City Hall (DBKL) will re-audit the route within the next 60 days. This is to ensure long-term safety for road users.
Elements in the bicycle lanes that need to be addressed are the bus, pedestrian and bicycle routes which were found to be over-lapping in certain areas, according to a The Sun Daily report. “For example in Jalan Raja Laut, bus routes are also used as pedestrian and bicycle paths … it is viewed as overlapping and is actually dangerous if the routes are used simultaneously,” said Tan Sri Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz, Kuala Lumpur mayor.
Nordin said this during the opening of the World Urban Village in conjunction with the World Urban Forum 9 (WUF9). “We actually have a master plan to improve the 11km bicycle route but first we need to get feedback from the public for re-auditing,” he said.
Nordin added views would be sought from ambassadors and mayors from European countries currently attending WUF9 to suggest improvements to the bicycle lanes. Protests were brought forward over the implementation of the bicycle lanes arose after it was alleged the lane separators used were a danger to other road users, notably motorcyclists.
Further controversy arose after it was incorrectly reported in a local daily that the lanes cost RM4 billion, instead of the estimated RM4 million. Meanwhile, DBKL has painted 140 bicycle bays on the pavement near the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, along Jalan Kia Peng and Jalan Pinang.
what a waste..
First things first. Every week from Mondays to fridays, how many were cyclist utilising the lane on the way to work?
Silly bicycle sharing startups are failing, bicycle graves popping up across China. And DBKL caved in trying to look cool and intelligent like those startup losers.
Buat kerja ala kadar sahaja… Mai minum
Why wait 60 days? Don’t they know this is very urgent to be done. You mean 2 whole months?
This is like the motorcycle lane on the federal highway. Now ready to use but bikes still using car lanes. Polis and DBKL, MBPJ and MPSJ all confused. All blaming each other.
Polis also now saying motor lane not gazetted despite bikes using the lane for 20 years already
As for this bicycle lane….2 months buat apa bang? You should do it in 2 weeks. After all our Government departments have 1.6 million people and have enough manpower. Get them to come and help you audit the bicycle lane.
Soon will be like the motorcycle lane…all enforcing authorities will blame each other.
As of yesterday, federal highway bike lane still under repair on several parts. I on a bicycle have had to ride on the highway itself. As for the KL bike lanes, it is a laughable effort by DBKL.
bodo punya orang…mana ada baca…cerdik pun tiada…bicycle lane overlap dengan bus & taxi lane…unless…their original planning is strictly for cyclist on Saturday , sunday , public holiday only ,,, then..overlap lane acceptable..
Soon after consulting with the ambassadors of European countries, we will send big huge rombongan sambil belajar to each of the European countries. Fly Business Class and stay in 6 star hotels.
Spend hundreds of million ringgit to study how this is done.
Tak payah lah…just go to Singapore and learn from our neighbour. Free they will teach
They dun have dedicated bike lane. Bikers there whiz by very dangerously on pedestrian walkways.
Good job DBKL. Better be slow than sorry…
Cat tambah upah 4 juta. Makan taik betul dbkl
This is Malaysia. Buat dulu baru study. Then what are your planner/engineer/consultant doing?
Consultants, mostly served as rubber-stampers, nodding to all clients’ wishes.
They served to make clients feel good that their desicions are right, cost-wise, technically.
Consultants don’t dare to give opinions that contradict with clients.
They say whatever clients want to hear, not what client should know.
This is norm since it is the client that pay consultants.
If consultants disagree with clients, that particular consultants wont get anymore consulting jobs later.
Build first, do the study later.
I applaud beneficial public project like this, but the way DBKL do this shows lack of accountability from their side. If they did the study thoroughly, these problems will already be rectified before the project began.
There should be an investigation and punishment for wasting public money. Otherwise they will dare to repeat this incompetence again and again.
It’s OK small money maybe next project Bullock Cart and Trishaw lanes to attract more tourist dollars
Taxi
kereta semua parking dekat bicycle lane
This is getting sillier by the day.
Everything about initial planning and studies appears to have been a joke. It would be hilarious, if it were not for the time and money already wasted.
Shame, shame, shame.
