Art of Speed 2019: Petronas custom Hot Wheels models – Shelby GT500, Reventón, RX-7, Civic Type R

There was plenty to see and do at Art of Speed 2019 over the weekend, and a lot of the focus centred around Petronas. The national oil and gas conglomerate was the title sponsor of the event for the third year running, and this year it had a few tricks up its sleeve.

The company collaborated with local outfit KromeBandits to offer five customised Hot Wheels scale models, including a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, a Lamborghini Reventón Roadster, an FB Mazda RX-7 and an FK8 Honda Civic Type R.

Each one featured a special “Move Like Never Before” livery, and the RX-7 and Civic were even fitted with a set of Volk Racing TE37-like six-spoke wheels. Just 200 units were made available to Mesra Card holders, each in a mystery box priced at RM200.

Another Hot Wheels model, a Mercedes-AMG GT3, was a lucky draw prize for customers who purchased a RM30 Petronas gift card at the event. Other promotions included an Instagram contest with a liveried Mercedes-Benz A 250 (with the gift card as a prize), Tealive vouchers for visitors who signed up for a Mesra Card, and prizes including RM100 in free fuel for those who installed and topped up the Setel e-wallet app.

At Rm200 per piece, it certainly is more pricier even than rare classic Hotwheels. To really maximise the full value of this special edition would be to collect all the cars in the series, but that itself is a challenge since you can’t pick and choose, plus that would have costed at least Rm800.

Any serious Hotwheels fan that would pay a premium on top of that are mostly in the United States but therein lies another problem, would they recognise this series as they are kinda limited to Malaysia and only for this promo?
