At Perodua’s presentation of its full year review earlier today, the automaker also touched on its research and development (R&D) plans in the near and extended future.
The company isn’t just looking to build more cars, it wants to develop them too, looking to be involved on a level beyond what it is at now. Now that the company has achieved full upper body development capability with support from Daihatsu, the intent is to work towards becoming an ASEAN R&D hub, working on developing products with – and for – the Japanese automaker.
Perodua president and CEO Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad says the aim is to have Perodua designing vehicles not just for Malaysia but for Indonesia and Thailand as well, and the company is working very hard to become the R&D hub in the region, and a self-reliant one at that.
While acknowledging that Daihatsu has a very big operation in Indonesia, “in terms of R&D, at this moment Perodua R&D, in terms of testing equipment, investment and facilities, is bigger than Indonesia,” he said.
Currently, the automaker’s R&D capabilities include full top hat upper-body design, engineering design, local parts development as well as the ability to undertake major facelift projects, but the big step will come with the advent of the next model, which will ride on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform that is based on the Toyota equivalent.
This is expected to be the D55L SUV, expected later this year. Aside from the SUV, four future unidentified DNGA-based models were outlined in the strategic direction presentation graphic, but Zainal was quick to point out that not all would be Perodua models.
“These four new models may not necessarily be Perodua models. When we achieve the level of R&D to become an ASEAN hub, we will design a model even for Daihatsu,” he said, adding that no matter the model, be it a Perodua or a Daihatsu, the company would be able to develop it.
Interestingly, while three of the highlighted quartet were hatchbacks, one was a sedan bodystyle. While nothing was intimated, it could well be that Perodua is leading the development of a new DNGA-based sedan model for Daihatsu meant for the ASEAN market.
The Daihatsu DN F-Sedan concept from two years ago could provide an idea of the intended direction. Daihatsu has never come up with a sedan, so it’d be new ground for the automaker, but with the Bezza, Perodua now has some experience with the bodystyle, which will surely prove invaluable.
As to designing products to cater for different markets within the region, Zainal said that the hub would be able to cater for different needs and requirements, and be distinct about it in terms of product differentiation.
“For example, they could ask us to develop a Daihatsu brand model for the Indonesian market. Our R&D is capable of doing that, but it doesn’t mean that that we (Perodua) takes that model and make it for the Malaysian market,” he said.
He said that Daihatsu actually engages Perodua to design for different markets, and that since last year, Perodua has been receiving consignment jobs to develop vehicles for other countries.
Curiously, the camouflaged Avanza mule spotted here last October could provide an idea of how this is shaping up. The mule could well be a R&D testbed for the next-gen Daihatsu Xenia/Avanza for Indonesia, given the presence of Indonesian Low MPVs being benchmarked against it.
The company also revealed that its total R&D investment to date stands at RM1.4 billion, which it says is about 18% of total investment made. This has gone into building facilities such as an engine lab, test track, thermal chamber, a VPT lab, emissions test centre and a design studio/research centre.
The company added it is in the midst of upgrading its test track, which is unique to Malaysia in terms of evaluation capabilities. Zainal said that the upgrading work on the course is expected to be completed before the end of 2020.

I hope the Game Over Proton fanboys can learn from Perodua instead of bashing Perodua to the max and claiming Proton to be a Game-Changing carmaker. Proton has so much to learn especially from it’s closest rival and China in order to become a Game-Changing national carmaker
Stop dreaming lah. You think your Daihatsu is as generous as Geely was with Proton? Ask yourself, for the past 30 years did any of your engineers & designers got subconded to Daihatsu Japan for deep intensive R&D works as what Geely is giving to Proton right now? What car did Daihatsu came out with, which Perodua CEO could have told the whole world about their contributions? None?
Both Daihatsu & Toyota have an even bigger manufacturing facilities in both the countries and you seriously think they will move away and into your bumper and badges “R&D”? Yeah right. ROFL!
Did you happen to listen too much into your online trolls giving undeserved praises about the company that paid them? Get a grip. You are losing sales because of them! Reality check, Proton found a good partner in Geely which in return trusted them and appreciated their deep manufacturing, R&D and design knowhow. You aren’t Proton and you will never be as good as Proton, not with you still relying on the Daihatsu for everything. So stop dreaming you can follow Proton to be the R&D hub for ASEAN.
You are only good at one thing only, and that is rebadging Daihatsu models. Just stick to your own beeswax or else venture into Proton’s territory and you will guaranteed be burned by Proton’s much superior engineering knowledge and experience.
At least we tak malu, we had to sell our loss making car to China
Total bailouts RM20 billion todate. Now China owns.
Geely got a good deal. For RM170 million they got Proton, RM5 billion (RM12 billion GDV) land in Shah Alam and Lotus
All 3 for just RM170 million
What did Geely gave Proton apart from the opportunity to design the front grille?
re engineer the car for right hand drive.
If just re-engineer to right hand drive is great, even the tiny NAZA R&D department has done the same engineering task, firstly with converting the Hafei Lobo into the NAZA Sutera and later Forza, then later doing the same with Peugeot 408 (only malaysia has built the RHD version)
Go read up on Hafriz written article about the proper RHD conversion done by Proton R&D team for X70. You should read more instead of just talk, kid. Here is the link:

From the cassis/structure side,
initially Proton X70 itself is a well buildup product from high-tensile thermoforming steel #1,650 Mpa,
which is higher than Previous
Proton Hot Press Forming’s #1,470 Mpa.
Do Note that most mass produced CKD-build Vehicles still incorporate Dual-phase high-strength steel #590 to 780 Mpa.
Proton CkD Rollout is not just a stepup into new advance technologies For Proton itself but a depth understanding & outlook into the whole Malaysian Advancements in Automotive Chain Industries.
X70 is $30k? Not generous at all.
Syabas P2 & P1 , upgred to R&D hub for ASEAN
Thank you Paultan for this Game-Changing news. This is very shocking indeed! Not only Perodua give us Game Changers, now Perodua are planning to become R&D Hub for ASEAN. With this Game-Changing achievement, Perodua have the potential be the “BMW of Asia”
Perodua involved in daihatsu rocky R&D, there are about 30 engineers from perodua join the R&D. And dont forget 3rd gen myvi also design by perodua. Basically perodua is daihatsu, daihatsu is perodua in Msia and for Msia market, now they wanna become hub for daihatsu, y not right? If peoples love it then good. They are assembler for daihatsu. And soon will be the hub. Just like ETCSB as nissan assembler. And perodua soon will be allowed to design their own car for daihatsu just like 3rd gen myvi. I hope perodua will design the cool looking dn-f sedan for Msia market too.
With this Game-Changing performance, Perodua should be rebranded as “Pertama” since Perodua have made everyone proud being a national carmaker. I also hope that Proton can learn Perodua’s working ethic as most of Proton workers still like to waste time being lazy and eating Kuih lapis 10X
Ohh another butthurt, do u think perodua bother abt wat ur non sense n butthurt talk? Nobody care dude. The more u condem the more perodua success. U cant do anything but only become keyboard warrior. Nobody care wat u wanna say. Rakyat oledi proven which is good. Only u the lonely keyboard warrior like to bising2 kekok2 here. Sori bro, i understand u always lose out, and will always be. Haha. Keep on denying, the more u deny n condem the more perodua move forward and success. Its good job cos i see and noticed it the more people condem the more perodua success so far. U should praise the perodua lord. Haha.
Talk to anyone inside perodua and they will say daihatsu hardly given them trust for any significant engineering job what more things as significant as R&D. The most that Daihatsu give them were cosmetic jobs and that is only after many2 years. Logically speaking, its the right formula. Just stick to that for now. Perodua dont need to be like proton with its pride and joy, the disastrous self-developed Gen2. Took years to clean that shit. Not sure if they really have did.
haters will hate whatever it is .. potong supporter pls go knock wall okie
The answer is actually yes.
It is you who does not know much about perodua R&D capabilities.
Perodua R&D has for decades been a part of Daihatsu’s overall R&D network. Daihatsu has actually a few times taken designs created by Perodua designers and stylists for Daihatsu cars.
One of the earliest was the Daihatsu Sirion Sport Concept for 2006 Paris Motorshow. That was actually the prototype for the Myvi SE. You can also see that Perodua designers has a main role for the latest Daihatsu Rocky, with plenty of latest Myvi design language went into the SUV.
Proton fanboys live in a cave.
And Perodua fanboys are still in denial
Myvi SE was something Perodu to be proud bout? Don’t make me laugh, even from afar anyone could see it was a 1st gen Myvi which was rebadged from Daihatsu Boon. Perodua only took the design from Daihatsu and copied it out.
When looser talk is like this lah. Being denial and ignorant even already loose kaw kaw. No point talking. Nobody care for wat u tok tok here hahaha. U toking for urself only, being denial and ignorant til get crazy. For 14-15 years p2 beat p1 kaw kaw. So u gonna be mentality damage kaw kaw too. Tanjung Rambutan await u. Go go shuh shuh. Muahahahaha.
I don’t feel the need in explaining to an uneducated person like you. Good night.
You can say the same for Proton’s glorious X70. Fully built by chinese in china and sold in malaysia as a Proton!
How old are you kid?
If you are around during Proton Wira and Lancer CDx design stage you will know that they are designed together. Similar to the 1st gen Myvi and Boon.
Malaysian automotive R&D scene is small and people go back and forth to proton and perodua, both companies has the talents and resources to develop cars. Proton fans no need to trash perodua and vice versa.
Good, i think the next Daihatsu Rocky for ASEAN are based on Perodua not come from Japan.
Hey perodua, i want that DN F sedan. So handsome sexy good looking sedan by daihatsu.
Good job Perodua! Its good to have a plan and try to achive the plan. I can see that Proton is also doing the same. Sharing the plan with the rakyat is a very good practice
Well done Perodua, Malaysians are proud of Perodua, From Day 1, they have been making profits of billions per year. Now making us the HUB for ASEAN. Always bringing us good name!
Do you know since inception, Perodua has paid more than RM1 bil in company tax yearly to LHDN?
Proton pulak has been given tax exemption from LHDN. They have not paid a single sen of tax the past 20 years because loss making the past 20 yrs.
Worse still, they have taken RM20 billion in bailouts. Perodua has never taken a single sen of bailouts.
So, in total, Proton losses are more than RM40 bil in past 20 years. No contribution to society at all. Zero sen to LHDN.
Perodua has paid so much of company tax, over RM25 bil in total and this money has been used to build schools and hospitals for the rakyat
Thank you Perodua and thank you for making us the HUB now
P1 never paid tax?
check this out:-
https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/2016/04/06/proton-gave-more-than-it-received-from-the-government-dr-m-tells-putrajaya/1094649
thats as of 2016, and coming from YOUR favorite master crony trainer.
Eat sh!t you effing liar.
and youre happy P2 is AIMING to be the hub- it hasnt become the hub yet (talk abut piss poor reading skills), will be doing r&d (and production) for a foreign brand for foreign market. so youre happy to make chump change while enriching someone else with money and tech.
what a total cuckold simp.
Cannot trust what our P2 troll tells us. He is just as untrustworthy as PH politicians nowadays.
Perodua got Japanese hard work ethics. The company will go far.
Proton still got lepak and rilak attitude amongst the staff. Li Chunrong is whipping them into shape. They are slowly improving.
Best of luck to both brands
by your logic, if LCR is ‘whipping’ them abangs2 yg manja, they would have left in droves, or LCR wouldve replaced them enmasse-there wouldve been a sh!t storm on social media, but theres none.
which could mean…they like it there now. they like learning new stuff and putting it into action and seeing tangible results.
so go eat sh!t mofo and and have a fatal new year!
All the results, past DRB honchos not capable of
DRB only had Proton solely for a short while as transition stage prior to the merger with Geely. Nothing much can be done during transition periods, doesn’t matter which company.
Bro. It’s not good to work hard in cheating the rakyat with lousy and unsafe cars. Perodua should learn from Proton how to make safer cars for the rakyat.
The Daihatsu DN F-Sedan will be the P3 car. P2 should just take over Toyota marque from UMW and using only P2 badge for all Daihatsu and Toyota product except for the commercial one.
Before becoming ASEAN hub, can P2 release the number of Sirion sales in Indonesia first.
Hi..For your comment status “Daihatsu has never come up with a sedan”… i guess it’s wrong as Daihatsu had their very own sedans in 90s such as “daihatsu applause” and also “daihatsu accent”
sau pei la peroduak. just keep copy paste your logo on daihatsu cars enough la. dont come out with your lala rempit inspired stupid design
hello,i want to ask regarding the organizing in this perodua’s project, could u explain to me
