Malaysian consumers aren’t the only ones preparing for changes that will surely come about with the upcoming rationalisation of diesel subsidies, because fuel smugglers in the northern part of the country are too, having already started making the switch from smuggling diesel to RON 95 petrol, Bernama reports.
According to domestic trade and cost of living (KPDN) minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, cases involving the smuggling of RON 95 petrol into Thailand have been on the climb ever since the government announced it was preparing to implement targeted subsidies for diesel.
It was reported last month that an estimated RM1.2 million of subsidised diesel was being smuggled into Thailand daily via the Bukit Kayu Hitam immigration, customs, quarantine and security (ICQS) complex.
Now, with diesel set to no longer have any allure in financial terms once the blanket subsidy for it is removed, smugglers are now focusing on the fuel that will continue providing them a tidy profit, at least until it too undergoes the rationalisation process.
“As a result of monitoring carried out by enforcement officers stationed at the eight main entry points in Kelantan, Perak, Kedah and Perlis, there is information that they are changing their strategy,” Armizan said.
“At the same time, my ministry has found that the modus operandi of smugglers is that they make repeated purchases of fuel at petrol stations around the bordering states. Previously, they used four-wheel drives to smuggle petrol, but now, they modify the petrol tanks of sedans to fill the excess petrol,” he added.
To overcome this problem, Armizan said the ministry has issued a supply controller’s instruction to petrol station owners to monitor and report vehicles that are detected making repeat purchases, and this will come into effect on June 7. “Additionally, my ministry will also strengthen cooperation with the road transport department (JPJ) to carry out monitoring and inspections to detect modified vehicles,” he said.

with the rampant leakages, this is a priority and need for strict enforcements. That includes the frequent rotation of enforcement officers and MACC undercover.
The leakages according to governement is in billions. So there should have enough budget to implement a state-of-the-art solution. Eg, for the vehicles going out, have a database of Make and Models. Then make the vehicle to go through a weighting bridge.
We hear no news of any culprit being capture. If is so rampant, cant even catch one?
Stoopid PH Gomen can go to h3ll
Very funny
How do they know?
Precisely which Kastam?
Why not smugglers into SG?
now only want to monitor is it?
If they wanted to smuggle, they would have done it a long time ago. They wouldn’t have to wait for your announcement. This is beginning to sound suspicious; the government is using excuses to raise prices.
‘I can’t catch these smugglers, so I’ll punish the entire population.’
Dumb government act, it’s like mouse race , never ending . Just catch and destroy, buat Betul Betul.
Why wait for petrol station owners to report “suspicious ” multiple trips of purchase of petrol?
What if the operators are the culprits?
U just get undercover agents to monitor the suspicious dealings at the border crossings.
It is unacceptable to note that more than 1 juta RM of diesel daily is smuggled into Thailand.
How come at the southern border with the Lion City, less leakages occur?
How come the border with Thailand is so “porous” ?
Our enforcement agencies…PMX….kindly revamp,transfer,reorganise,reboot..whatever it takes to STOP the leakages.
The poor covidian striken rakyat is paying 60% more for diesel, but some dudes are getting super rich.

Sky is the limit
Greed is good
Most diesel are smuggled by vessels to be sold to our neighbours. Their tanks can easily load hundreds of tons per load. That’s hundreds of thousands in profit for just a few days job.
Or sold illegally to industries which are not suppose to buy subsidised diesel.
That means it’s working. RON95 will be next.
“It was reported last month that an estimated RM1.2 million of subsidised diesel was being smuggled into Thailand daily via the Bukit Kayu Hitam immigration, customs, quarantine and security (ICQS) complex.”
silly question , u know the what, u know where yet u can’t stop it ? jokers
Admit that corruption is running at all levels and gov has no guts to get rid of all of them or make the rakyat suffer…mana lebih senang…
cekup la smuggler semua ni. bukan nya polis tak tau siapa dorang ni. sekaligus 1Malaysia tiada subsidi. Sales tax kereta kena hapus atau kurangkan! baru lah berkesan!
Many orang bodoh may not see what is going on here. Gov is starting to make excuse and open way for the same targeted subsidi BS and apply it to Ron 95 as well. They always start with the stupid smuggling excuse. Watch out. Kick them out. Tak pandai gali minyak mai bagi saya galikan. Esok semua diesel, petrol saya turunkkan harga without any targetted subsidi BS.
Even ron95 price is hike, both ron95 and ron97 are still cheaper than neighbour countries. Govt need to think how to combat the illegal export/corruption in the same time, else it’s back to square one and suffer will be everyone due to inflation.
Smugglers gotta eat
Blh da cium pipi pemimpin kita ni semua. Slps diesel, da hints2 da utk RON95.
Tahniah Rakyat Malaysia.
Semakin senang x tu?
Syukur kenyang boyak perut kroni2.
most smugle case happen at sabah to filiphine and serawak using land border to indonesia. but why both state not effected by diesel subsidies RASIONALISASIMYASS?
Right, it’s indirectly telling us that government wants to remove subsidy for RON95 soon. the inflation rate will go up twice. next GE is still 4 years away… brace yourself for a tough fight with the opposition. they will use inflation as a political tool.
life is a like pacifier…once remove, will quickly adapt by going 4 the alternatives (eg. petrol, flying container) with ready buyers behind them….
bila hapuskan AP, lower down import tax and cut off excise duties?
