As the years draws to a close and preparations for the festive season arise, the time is apt for contemplation of the journey thus far, including how it all started.
The journey of Porsche into full electrification may be represented most prominently in modern times by the Taycan, followed by the Macan and most recently, the Cayenne Electric, though if we delve into the history books, the Porsche story was in fact, electric from the very beginning.
While the first car to bear the Porsche name was the 356, the first-ever electric car designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the Egger-Lohner C.2 Phaeton was unveiled in 1898, and this was powered by a 5 PS octagonal electric motor that would propel the vehicle at up to 35 km/h, with a range of up to 80 km. This was named the P1 by Ferdinand Porsche, to denote that it was the first Porsche-designed car.
Fast forward to the present day, and thanks to electric propulsion, Porsche now has four-door models in its line-up that can out-accelerate some of its own two-door sports cars. For example, the Taycan Turbo can do the 0-100 km/h sprint in 2.7 seconds, whereas the iconic 911, in Carrera guise, takes 3.8 seconds over the same measure.
The battery-electric Macan that followed brought relative accessibility and performance to Malaysian customers in equal measure, with a variant line-up that started with the base Macan, right up to the Macan Turbo that boasts of up to 639 PS with overboost activated from its dual-motor powertrain.
Given that the first fully electric Porsche of the modern day, the Taycan, had emerged just six years ago, electrification appears a very recent achievement milestone compared with the marque’s success in motorsport, which goes back decades. However from the purpose-built 99X Electric in Formula E to the Taycan Turbo GT, motorsport DNA clearly runs deep in electric Porsche models.
With motorsport regularly demonstrated to be the make-or-break proving ground of automotive technology, the pedigree of an electric Porsche is therefore undeniable.
