Overview

The first-generation BYD Dolphin is a B-segment electric hatchback launched in 2023, aimed at buyers moving into EV ownership without stepping up to an SUV. It suits urban commuting and smaller households, with five seats and two battery-and-motor outputs to choose from. Prices start from RM100,530.

The Malaysian BYD Dolphin carries into 2026 unchanged. The current EV range remains the Dynamic Standard Range with a 44.92 kWh battery, 340 km range and 94 hp, plus the Premium Extended Range with a 60.48 kWh battery, 427 km range and 201 hp. The 2025 facelift and the 2026 Dolphin G plug-in hybrid are separate developments, not an update to this Malaysian Mk1 EV range.

The Dolphin remains a straightforward entry point into EV hatchback ownership, with a useful split between a lower-cost commuter version and a longer-range, far quicker Premium. But its price is no longer low by electric-hatchback standards: the Proton eMas 5 and Wuling Bingo start substantially cheaper, while the Neta V, Dongfeng Box and MG4 begin around the Dynamic’s money. The Premium’s range and power need to matter to justify its sizeable step up.
