More on Proton’s EMAS Concept Cars

Proton has just sent over a PDF document explaining the EMAS Concepts a little. The text goes a little more in depth into the design language. It’s an interesting read if you just can’t get enough of the EMAS triplets. If we’re lucky, Proton will probably showcase then at the KLIMS the end of this year alongside some other interesting stuff. Then both you and I will get to see it in flesh. But for now, enjoy the text and remember to click the ‘fullscreen’ button for easier reading, or download it for offline use.

Proton's hybrid needs this (and it's being researched by Chinese students & profs in the US):

    Stanford Report, December 7, 2009

At Stanford, nanotubes + ink + paper = instant battery

Dip an ordinary piece of paper into ink infused with carbon nanotubes and silver nanowires, and it turns into a battery or supercapacitor. Crumple the piece of paper, and it still works. Stanford researcher Yi Cui sees many uses for this new way of storing electricity.

Post doctoral students in the lab of Prof. Yi Cui, Materials Science and Engineering, light up a diode from a battery made from treated paper, similar to what you would find in a copy machine. The paper batteries are treated with a nanotube ink, baked and folded into electrical generating sources like the one wrapped in foil seen here.

    BY JANELLE WEAVER

Stanford scientists are harnessing nanotechnology to quickly produce ultra-lightweight, bendable batteries and supercapacitors in the form of everyday paper.

Simply coating a sheet of paper with ink made of carbon nanotubes and silver nanowires makes a highly conductive storage device, said Yi Cui, assistant professor of materials science and engineering.

"Society really needs a low-cost, high-performance energy storage device, such as batteries and simple supercapacitors," he said.

Like batteries, capacitors hold an electric charge, but for a shorter period of time. However, capacitors can store and discharge electricity much more rapidly than a battery.

Cui's work is reported in the paper "Highly Conductive Paper for Energy Storage Devices," published online this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"These nanomaterials are special," Cui said. "They're a one-dimensional structure with very small diameters." The small diameter helps the nanomaterial ink stick strongly to the fibrous paper, making the battery and supercapacitor very durable. The paper supercapacitor may last through 40,000 charge-discharge cycles – at least an order of magnitude more than lithium batteries. The nanomaterials also make ideal conductors because they move electricity along much more efficiently than ordinary conductors, Cui said.

L.A. Cicero Bing Hu, a post-doctoral fellow, prepares a small square of ordinary paper to with an ink that will deposit nanotubes on the surface that can then be charged with energy to create a battery.

Bing Hu, a post-doctoral fellow, prepares a small square of ordinary paper with an ink that will deposit nanotubes on the surface that can then be charged with energy to create a battery.

Cui had previously created nanomaterial energy storage devices using plastics. His new research shows that a paper battery is more durable because the ink adheres more strongly to paper (answering the question, "Paper or plastic?"). What's more, you can crumple or fold the paper battery, or even soak it in acidic or basic solutions, and the performance does not degrade. "We just haven't tested what happens when you burn it," he said.

The flexibility of paper allows for many clever applications. "If I want to paint my wall with a conducting energy storage device," Cui said, "I can use a brush." In his lab, he demonstrated the battery to a visitor by connecting it to an LED (light-emitting diode), which glowed brightly.

A paper supercapacitor may be especially useful for applications like electric or hybrid cars, which depend on the quick transfer of electricity. The paper supercapacitor's high surface-to-volume ratio gives it an advantage.

"This technology has potential to be commercialized within a short time," said Peidong Yang, professor of chemistry at the University of California-Berkeley. "I don't think it will be limited to just energy storage devices," he said. "This is potentially a very nice, low-cost, flexible electrode for any electrical device."

Cui predicts the biggest impact may be in large-scale storage of electricity on the distribution grid. Excess electricity generated at night, for example, could be saved for peak-use periods during the day. Wind farms and solar energy systems also may require storage.

"The most important part of this paper is how a simple thing in daily life – paper – can be used as a substrate to make functional conductive electrodes by a simple process," Yang said. "It's nanotechnology related to daily life, essentially."

Cui's research team includes postdoctoral scholars Liangbing Hu and JangWook Choi, and graduate student Yuan Yang.

On another note, Lotus F1 has secured CNN as a sponsor.

I think they should work on this car really really hard…they should target to put it on the market within 2 years…if they wait too long, the design & concept would be "basi" / outdated by then.

Also, Proton should think of developing a clean sub 1900cc diesel engines for their models…diesel is the way now, everyone is moving to diesel because of their efficiency (1litre of diesel can go a long way) & low emission capability (if tuned properly). Besides, having a diesel engine makes us more "green", we can make use of Malaysia's 5% biodiesel.

Also, having a diesel engine would open them up to new markets, trucks, buses & other heavy commercial vehicle…or even a 4WD SUV? Malaysia government bodies, departments & agencies always end up buying Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero, Nissan Xtrail & Ford Everest…simply because there is NO capable Malaysian 4WD (Perodua Nautica is rubbish).

Never forget how Waja touted as Asia's answer to BMW 3 series. All time classic.

Now this Proton EMAss car gotta be world's answer to Toyota Prius. Bonkers!

While 3-series way overpriced zillion times over Waja, the same for Toyota Prius here (with over RM180K price) and that NAP guideline says that hybrid cars at RM180K given priority and incentives for any car makers set up facilities here. That's explain why Prius sold starting at RM180K.

Pretty sick isn't it. Obviously to deliberate Proton time to milk a newly created artificial hybrid car market below RM180K while others must sell over RM180K. Maybe at RM150K price this EMAss car of course looks artificially cheaper than RM180K Prius.

Same old trick to hijack local car market lah, this time the hybrid car market. Banyak cantik you Proton EMAss!

Ok lah to be fair it's just a coincidence that NAP provide incentive to car makers to set up local operation here with hybrid cars at RM180K price, rather than quietly let Proton time to sell below RM180K hybrid car price later…

    —————————————————————

You're missing the point. This is a series hybrid electrci vehicle with range extender. Meaning after 50 km EV range, the engine will be turned on to recharge the battery. So as long as you can reach any petrol station, you can drive this ca from KL to Penang and back. Your Mitsubishi-i will be stranded somewhere in Tapah with only 180 km EV range without any on-board generator!

Plus, for most people the daily commuting range is probably not going to be more than 50 km. So it's sufficient and you can skip the petrol station and jst recharge at home.

One more thing, electrc motor trqe output is way more consistent compared to internal combustion engine, so you get the maximum torque from 0 rpm and depends on teh motor this peak torque can be sustain up to 80% of the motor top speed. And do you really need to spin the wheel more than 1500 rpm (close to 150 km/h iif rmal car tire size) to drift?

2- you get what you pay. I believe they are getting better.

3- too expensive? cannot afford it? buy other cars.

4- Just pay your electricity bills

Cantik. Tapi tak sesuai untuk jalan di Malaysia.

Cermin depan terlalu besar sampai atas kepala. Mesti panas gila dalam kereta bila tengah hari. Silau sepanjang masa.

Orang Itali yg design mesti lah ikut cuaca sana.

This model should be "BOOOOM" in International Market.

Price Range shall suit for Middle Management income range.

For Battery Charging…. new industries will be establish.

All Shopping Complex at parking lot shall have 240V/13A plug with

special fee. Same goes to apartment/condo's parking lot.

    For cost saving comparison :-

Home to Office to Home = 40km

    Others car (using Fuel) = 20days x 4L/day x Fuel cost/L

    Electric = 20days x 3 hrs x Electric cost/hr

    For Malaysian :-

    Others car (using Fuel) = 20days x 4L/day x RM1.80 Fuel cost/L= RM144/mth

    Electric = 20days x 3.12kW x 3hrs x RM0.30 Electric cost/kWhr = RM56.16

    "More then half saving"

Reply Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
  73. Mildov says:

    Saving comparison :-

    RM saving = RM88/mth

    RM88 x 12mth = RM1056/year…..

if only that car for Home-Office-Home route….

If for others travel…. more & more saving

Ask govt to stop protecting proton? Well, for that to (possibly) happen, you have to vote a gay as your prime minister. Got balls?

aiyoo. mcm mana you tau sapa bakal jd PM? mcm mana you tau ini guys btl2 gay. You penah tengok dgn mata you ke? aiyoo. Kita dalam Islam tak boleh tuduh2 ( kalau you org Islam la ) sbb dosa byk sbb kita tak lihat dengan mata kepala sendiri. kalau Pakatan Rakyat sekalipun memerintah dan masih berdegil sbg mana our G skrg, saya tetap akan hentam itu Pakatan Rakyat. Hopefully if they win election, Proton tidak akan dilindungi dgn cara menderitakan rakyat sebaliknya saya lbh minat Proton dibantu dgn cara suntikan modal. Tak kisahlah dengan cara beli lebih byk saham atau bg pinjaman pd Proton.

Pretty sick isn’t it.

Banyak cantik you Proton EMAss!

setuju sgt2 ngan kenyataan lu. Even kereta Lotus Evora ( milik anak sykt Proton ) terpaksa dijual mahal disini kerana bukan made in Malaysia.

China yg kita perlekeh pun dah jauh kedepan dlm teknologi bateri kereta, EV car, hybrid car.

    Nice car,

But, one hiccup, lack of boot space for 'balik kampung'

    He, he, he,

These car only practical for commuting to work, just like the Myvi, Too big and too expansive for 2nd car, too small for 1st car.

Look forward for the Hibrid Persona and Exora.

    BTW, Congrat Proton.

Proton Emas is a creative collaboration between PROTON, Italdesign Giugiaro and Lotus Engineering

If you look at the movie back to the future by michael J fox, You will notice one of the finest design car in that movie The delorean DMC 12, stainless steel car design by , Giugiaro

Seing proton emas especially silver with black, theres no doubt that the workcraft of Giugiaro is great, nice job proton, haha wish that the door is a gull wing like delorean

The delorean is on production again

I agree with art said, poton logo is not verry pretty Using PROTON is suitable I think.
