Mazda3 SkyActiv-G with SkyActiv-Drive debuts in Toronto

Mazda’s SkyActiv movement has taken another step forward with the introduction of the SkyActiv-G-equipped Mazda3 at the 2011 Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto.

The 2.0 litre petrol engine option, together with the SkyActiv-Drive automatic transmission, will make its way into the North American market sometime in the fall. A diesel SkyActiv pot is expected to make its debut next year.

The SkyActiv model will offer not just higher torque at low- and mid-range engine speeds, resulting in better drivability, but will also offer around 20% better fuel economy than the existing standard fare Mazda3.

The company has stated that its goal is to improve fuel efficiency by 30% by 2015, compared to 2008 levels, through its host of SkyActiv technologies, which currently focus on improving the efficiency of internal combustion core technologies and vehicle weight reduction but will expand to incorporate more items on the list as it goes along.

In addition to the new SkyActiv engine and transmission, the 2012 model year Mazda3 slated for North America features exterior updates in the form of new front and rear bumpers with a redesigned front grill, fog bezels and front headlamps, as well as new 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels.

No more fuel-ing around – in comes JC08, out goes 10-15

Realistically, as far as fuel consumption figures go, we all know that real-world numbers never get to manufacturer claimed figures, but there has been a great disparity in claimed and real-life mileage numbers for domestic offerings in Japan, enough to get consumers complaining.

All that will finally change with the full adoption of the JC08 chassis dynamometer test cycle for light vehicles. According to an Asahi Shimbun report, the JC08 standard of computing fuel efficiency – which was introduced in 2007 – is set to finally replace the country’s 10-15 mode cycle test as the de facto benchmark for claimed consumption figures.

The country’s transport ministry will require automakers to use JC08-based figures from April for their new models. As for current models, the figures will gradually be phased in by numbers based on the new testing method, by 2013, the report said.

For years, the mileage figures derived from the 10-15 mode test cycle has been the accepted norm. The only problem is that in real-life, consumers never got anywhere close to those numbers generated by the testing, with the variation from the catalogue figure being very noticeable.

The Toyota Prius, for example, is supposed to be able to achieve 38 km per litre according to the catalogue. In the real world, however, the hybrid manages an average of 21.7 km per litre, according to Japanese mobile phone site e-nenpi, which publishes mileage figures calculated on actual fuel and distance data provided by drivers. That’s a difference of 43%.

Part of the problem with 10-15 mode testing has been its lack of variation; though there are 25 tests in all, the vehicles go through their paces at a constant rate of acceleration and have to maintain the same speed on rolling road dynamometers at government testing facilities, not exactly reflective of real-world accuracy. The 10-15 running pattern begins with a warm start, lasts for 660 seconds and runs at speeds up to 70 kph.

It doesn’t help when transport ministry officials say that automakers adjust the programming of engine control systems to ensure good results and employ special test drivers for their vehicles.

With JC08, evaluation tests will measure complicated acceleration and deceleration maneouvres repeatedly in an effort to emulate driving in urban conditions. The pattern runs longer, at 1200 seconds, with both cold and warm start measurements, and the top speed goes up to 82 kph. In general, the figures from JC08 are expected to be 15% percent lower than that obtained through 10-15. but will reflect more realistic numbers.

With the UN moving towards the introduction of common international standards for different fuel efficiency testing methods by 2013, expect more in the way of ratification and standardisation as it goes along.

VIDEO: Volkswagen Passat and a little Darth Vader

This US market ad for the Volkswagen Passat is quite amusing – it showcases the car’s Remote Start feature which allows you to start your Passat from your remote control while you are still outside the car. It’s quite a cool feature if you want your car to start up and run the air conditioning to cool the interior down before you get in and drive off. The Remote Start feature will keep the car running for up to 10 minutes, and if you don’t get into the driver’s seat to begin your journey it’ll shut off again. It’s an option for automatic/DSG transmissions only. Lucky kid – when I was young the only costume I had to play with was whatever I could make from a blanket!

SDAC’s Experience Fiesta, Experience Hollywood contest – win a trip 5D4N trip to the American Idol!

The Ford Fiesta was quite prominently showcased in last year’s American Idol. There was even a segment where the top 12 finalists were given a chance to customize their own Fiestas to their own tastes with the help of designers. So far Ford has taken quite a fun approach to marketing the Fiesta which is in tune with its target audience and rather than just shove the car in your face with the USPs, we have things like the American Idol tie-up and the Ford Fiesta Movement in the US.

In Malaysia, we even had own own little Fiesta Movement which revolved around the Ford Fiesta in Malaysia Fan Page. And now we’ll be able to get a taste of this year’s American Idol as well, in SDAC’s Experience Fiesta, Experience Hollywood contest. Yes you got that right – Ford is currently having a contest where you stand a chance to win a trip to Hollywood for this year’s American Idol semi-final live show on a 5 Day 4 Night trip with accommodation and hotel/airport transfer in Los Angeles! There are a total of FIVE grand prizes! The contest runs from the 14th of February 2011 to the 31th of March 2011.

All you have to do is pay a visit to any SDAC Ford branch or Ford authorized dealer and test drive the Fiesta 1.6L Sport. Here’s where it gets interesting. Instead of just a normal test drive where the sales advisor prattles off the car’s features, Ford has actually prepared an interactive audio CD which will be played in the car and will guide you through the car’s features. After a 15 to 20 minute drive, you will actually be taught how to use the Voice Control feature to submit your contest entry via the mission center, which is basically a 1-800 toll-free number with an Interactive Voice Response you will call using the car’s Bluetooth hands-free system.

Just as a recap, the Fiesta 1.6L Sport has a 1.6 litre Ti-VCT engine, a 6-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, twin airbags, 16 inch alloy wheels, and of course, the Voice Control with Bluetooth feature which you will use to submit your contest entry. You can only join once so make your entry a good one – you will be prompted questions by the IVR system!

Existing Ford Fiesta owners and those who have booked the Fiesta but have yet to receive their cars are also eligible to join but you will still have to visit the Ford showroom to join and inform the sales advisors.

Honda Malaysia to recall 21,956 City and 1,680 Jazz vehicles

Honda Malaysia has announced that it will recall 21,956 units of the third-generation City (model year 2009) as well as 1,680 units of the second-generation Jazz (model year 2009 and 2010). The recall addresses problems with the lost motion springs and the retainers in the affected vehicles, with replacement of these to be carried out with countermeasure parts.

In the affected cars, the lost motion springs – which are compressed by rocker arms in normal engine use – may bend or break over time, resulting in irregular engine noise and potentially causing engine stalls. No related crashes or injuries have been reported so far.

“We sincerely apologise to our customers and deeply regret the inconvenience caused by this predicament. It is our priority to put our customers first,” Honda Malaysia’s managing director and CEO Yoichiro Ueno said in a statement.

“To address this issue, we will be writing to all the affected customers to send their vehicles to an authorised dealer as soon as they receive notification from us,” he said.

The company is in the midst of preparing the replacement parts. Necessary inspection and replacement will be carried out when the parts are ready, and all charges incurred in the inspection and replacement work will be borne by the company. Honda Malaysia added that all its current selling models are not affected.

Proton signs PG Andersson for the full 2011 IRC season

Looks like we’ll be seeing more of Per-Gunnar Andersson driving the Satria Neo S2000 as he and Proton have agreed to team up for the rest of the 2011 Intercontinental Rally Challenge season. The 30-year old Swede raced the Neo S2000 for the first time at the recent centenary edition of the Monte Carlo Rally, which is also the first IRC leg this year. His was quick but unlucky to retire on the first day after hitting a rock that damaged the suspension.

“It’s fantastic to have a season of driving confirmed. The Satria is a great car and to have the chance to be working with a manufacturer like Proton is very good news for me. There is some work to do with the car but in the short time I have been with the team we have made some big steps forward,” said PG, a two-time Junior World Rally champion.

Proton Motorsports team principal Chris Mellors is happy with his new recruit. “Anybody who has seen PG driving up close can be in no doubt about the kind of speed he is capable of. We’re really looking forward to working with him this season,” the MEM boss said.

The next IRC round is the Rally Islas Canarias (Spain) in April. In the meantime, PG is sharpening his skills in the WRC. In the season opening Rally Sweden, where Mikko Hirvonen gave the Ford Fiesta RS World Rally Car a winning start, Proton’s new man finished seventh driving the same Ford. That appearance was paid for by over 400 donations from his fan club. That pot isn’t empty yet, so he’s looking forward to WRC’s Rally d’Italia in May.

Proton Campro CFE Turbo Prototype testing in the snow

The strange looking Proton Prototype that looks like a shorter and lower Proton Exora has been sighted in Malaysia quite a few times and seemingly with increased frequency too, but now apparently it has appeared overseas as well! Here’s some shots of the new Proton Prototype being tested overseas somewhere up north on snowy terrain.

For the first time we also have photos of what the interior of the prototype looks like. No idea how my source managed to get it. He must have chummed up with the test drivers as there was mention of Bosch being involved in this testing. It looks pretty much like a regular right hand drive Proton Exora at first sight, but look closer and you’ll see that the gate shifter has also a different pattern P-R-N-D-L instead of the P-R-N-D-3-2-L in the Exora – this probably points to the CVT transmission, where D would be regular driving and L would engage a CVT shift pattern optimised for engine braking.

If you zoom into the photo above and look at the sticker on the dashboard it says “P3 – CFE TURBO CVT3″ – they could likely be testing the new turbocharged Campro CFE Turbo drivetrain and CVT gearbox on a modified Exora-looking mule designed to simulate the target weight of the vehicle that this drivetrain package is intended for, perhaps the production version of the Proton Tuah/Espire/Persona R.

What do you think CFE stands for? The rest of the shots are after the jump.

Honda UK has launched a limited edition variant of the European Civic hatchback called the Civic Ti, which gets a whole load of plastic slapped on the exterior and a higher spec multimedia system for the interior.

The five-door car, which has the 1.4 and 1.8 i-VTEC SE variants as base platforms, gets its styling cues from this season’s Honda Racing British Touring Car challenger.

Kicking things off is a ‘GP’ bodykit in Crystal Black that provides contrast to the exclusive Premium White Pearl shade; items include a front spoiler, rear spoiler (finished in white), side skirt inserts and rear body skirts.

Rounding off the exterior dress-up are matt black 17-inch ‘Pro Race’ wheels from Team Dynamics, Honda’s racing partner in the BTCC.

Inside, the Civic Ti gets a state-of-the-art Pioneer Navigation Multimedia System, which offers full-scale sat nav, entertainment and communication with a 3D graphic touchscreen. The Pioneer system provides another link to the BTCC team, as the AV electronics firm is the main sponsor of the Honda Racing Team.

Just 500 of these limited edition Civics will go on sale in the UK from next month.

MG returns to the UK, with MG6 fastback due in April

While the Chinese connection for MG has been building up steadily, with SAIC aggressively marketing the marque in the country, it has all been rather quiet at the place where it all began, until now, that is.

The brand has just been relaunched in the UK, the return being ushered in at the company’s Longbridge facility in Birmingham. To chug things along, there’s a new website as well as an updated logo for the brand – the badge differs from the Chinese version and wil be used exclusively in Europe.

There’s also a product, of course, and this is the MG6, which will carry the flag for the brand’s return to European shores. The fastback version, based on the Roewe 550, is slated to go on sale in the UK sometime in the middle of April, with customer deliveries starting sometime in May. At this point, the car will ship only in 1.8 turbo form, with a five-speed manual gearbox.

Meanwhile, the sedan form is due into the UK around July, with keen interest ramping up its arrival from the third quarter of the year. Hopefully, it’ll be a happier time for the brand with its return home.

It’s confirmed: Nick Heidfeld will fill in for Robert Kubica in Lotus Renault GP

It’s confirmed – 33 year old German Nick Heidfeld will be filling in the driver’s seat for injured Robert Kubica, and his first official duties will begin this weekend at the test session in Barcelona. Heidfeld has 172 races under his belt so far, and when the first race in Bahrain rolls along, it will be Heidfeld and Vitaly Petrov piloting the new R31 racers on the grid.

“I would have liked to come back to Formula 1 in different circumstances, but I’m proud to have been given this chance. Everything has happened so quickly, but I’ve been very impressed by what I have seen so far in terms of the facilities and the dedication of the people at Enstone. I really enjoyed the test last week in Jerez and I’ve already settled in well with the guys at the track. I have a good feeling for the car, which is quite innovative. I can’t wait for the season to begin,” said Heidfeld in a press statement today.
