Subaru to revamp Oizumi plant – boxer engine production to grow 160% by 2015, and Toyota FT-86 to be built here

Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru cars, has announced that it is refurbishing its Oizumi plant in Gunma Prefecture, Japan with a view to expansion of building capacity and a switching of product manufacturing lines. It is set to spend around 40 billion yen to do so.

The company is set to withdraw from its mini-car development and production, and will switch over to building larger vehicles. From next year, through an OEM agreement, it will begin buying minicars from Toyota group member Daihatsu and selling them as Subarus.

The plant at Gunma, which currently has a build capacity of 80,000 vehicles a year, will be upgraded and output will be almost doubled to around 150,000 units annually. Oizumi will be primarily responsible for building the new sports cars planned and designed by Toyota and developed by Fuji Heavy, namely the Toyota FT-86 and Subaru 0846, which is set to begin sales as early as spring next year, reports say.

Though the lineup is as yet unfinalised, the plant is also set to build other models in the Subaru lineup, such as the Legacy, the Impreza and the Forester, to fully utilise production capacity.

Elsewhere, the company is aiming to increase its production capacity for its boxer engine by 160% to 820,000 units a year by fiscal 2015, the reports add. It will start changing production lines for its older engines with lines for the new third-generation, horizontally opposed four-cylinder boxer, which debuted in the Forester last October and is available in 2.0 and 2.5 litre displacements.

With the intention to sell 900,000 vehicles worldwide in 2015, the company has determined that a substantial increase in engine build output is needed to match those numbers. Subaru is also looking at doubling its build capacity for its CVT transmissions to between 700,000 and 800,000 units.

the LEDs in cars, the aftermarket ones
what effects they got? i mean is there any benefits to the drivers rather than looked cool and whatever?
because i got some stupid drivers dont bother to switch ON the lights at NIGHTS and all of them got this LEDs on their car

when i got into power, i will ban these aftermarket LEDs.
however i will lift the ban, if the drivers become mature enough to think

I wonder if you have these flashing red LED lights people put on the back of their car at where you stay, but it’s extremely popular here… and extremely ANNOYING!

Some are fine, but some flashes at high frequency, something like 15Hz~ Did they not know the bright flashing lights can be used as a weapon to confuse people? Tactical flashlights has them.

I get extremely nauseous when I happen to get stuck behind one of those cars. If you ever gain power, help me ban those lights!! Or at least make a regulation on what sort can be installed.

  • Produce more cheap 2 doors RWD car, coupe ….like old days. No need to be too complicated n luxurious, just a good, simple & affordable package. Perhaps the most complicated thing in the car is the radio, unrepairable, just replace with new unit if broken. And perhaps the most luxurious thing is standard air conditioner, power windows, radio, and optional leather seat and auto tranny. If talking about car, we just need a car with descent necessary equipment, not a 4 wheel spaceship…..and most important, RAW POWER for this type of car.

Engine at the front, gearbox at the middle, drive at the back. What more could we ask for?

I hope they make it affordable even for us makan gaji ones… Seriously I’m believe a lot of the readers here who’s excited about this car would make do with less safety/luxury features for lower price tag… right?

I want a lightweight RWD car. I’ll settle for plastic interior if it means it’s cheap and light, no leather for me. I don’t want ABS, I don’t want airbags, I don’t want 6 speaker ICE, I don’t care about immobilizer, and I don’t care about ncap star rating.

1 tonne, RWD, 150-200hp, strong brakes, strong manual stick shift gearbox, strong clutch, strong LSD diffs, 50/50 weight distribution, air conditioning (Malaysia too hot, no choice), and affordable…

      Okay basically I just wanted a replacement for my KE70 that’s sitting in my car porch for 7 months and not moving anymore ;___;

Sorry to burst your bubble… but that’s just not possible. Car makers nowadays have to fulfill a lot of Euro Standard features. Just look at all the new cars coming out. They all look quite alike due to some requirement on pedestrian safety, that’s why new cars have these high bonnet lines. Same for airbags, ABS and all the rest.
And while all of us are hoping for it to be affordable,… well we know reality sucks! :( Oh well, we can still try to strike lottery hehehehe

No bubble to burst here… I already know the fact *sad* just want to dream a little bit… but yeah there’s a bigger chance we can strike the lottery than they make a simple no-nonsense car hahaha.

Then I’ll just wait for the Subaru version… maybe they’ll make a Spec C version :D

FT-86 to be built at their Gunma plant? Now that’s in the spirit of Initial D! The story of Initial D began in the Gunma prefecture! :D

ft86? truly looking forward to this. The only way toyota can botch this car is by only offering auto tranny in Malaysia.

Expecting a 160k-180k price tag and I will be among the first few to lineup. :)

since its a Subaru, then it should use a boxer….
boxer should have lower center gravity than an i4 translate to better handling….
