Next-gen Honda Civic Type R to have 265-300 hp

Honda Civic Type R Euro

Honda is aiming for the Nurburgring FWD lap record with the next Civic Type R (2009 FN2 Euro pictured), which the company has confirmed will produce between 265 and 300 hp, reports Auto Express. Testing should begin at the ‘Ring later this year before the car goes on sale in 2015.

The company will apply the experience and tech gained from the World Touring Car Championship to the development of the hot hatch. Anything from a 1.6 litre turbo to a 2.0 litre turbo is possible.

To be based on the Euro-market hatchback, the Civic Type R will first be sold in Europe only, with the gates opening to other markets later if public reception is favourable.

The Nurburgring FWD lap record is currently held by the Renaultsport Megane 265 Trophy at 8 minutes and 7.97 seconds.

  • ” with the gates opening to other markets later if public reception is favorable” . Going to start a petition to HM to at least bring in limited numbers. And if they want the FWD record they better do it fast, the next Focus RS is reported to come with more hp.

300hp only though the front wheels?? No thanks. That’s a recipe for a terrible-handling car. Honda, what’s so difficult with endowing your flagship sports sedan with AWD?

Because that what make a civic a civic, FWD sports car with practicality. But if they really forced induction the engine, I am quite disappointed because no more high revving N/A sound. At least have a N/A variant for Asian market and from the experience of K20A block, 2 litre N/A going 300hp is possible.

Try driving in a 300hp turbocharged sedan vs an AWD like a Subaru or a good RWD car like a BMW 3-series, and then re-evaluate what you think about having that much horsepower and torque only on the front wheels.. from a person who has played with transplanted engines to put out over 240hp only on the front wheels..

Don’t be so pessimistic. Remember Honda have a great heritage that they are proud and respectful of. If Honda are making a FWD car that can go around the Nurburging in under 8 minutes, THERE’S NO WAY IN HELL THAT IT WOULD BE A BAD HANDLING CAR. Bit of logic, it would have to be better handling than a Renault Megane RS, and we know how well that handles.

I’m guessing it will have either 1.6 or 2.0l direct injection turbo with KERS hybrid.

    As according to Honda EarthDream.
Don’t worry NA petrol head. Honda always produce cars with excitement that last for generations.

I remember the oldies generation say that VTEC is useless and nonsense as it kills all the big V8s. Now, hybrid has kill all the gas gusling non-hybrid to lower emmision.

I don’t think hybrid will kill a sporty experience of a car besides for Dugong Prius. A hybrid can be exciting and fun. With the EV boost on a hybrid make it easier to overtake anyone.

exactly, a hybrid sports car makes so much more sense than a turbo. you can get max output from the battery from 0 RPM, but it’s not gonna be cheap when you factor in the cost of the battery to produce such an amount of torque. maybe wait for a few more years, then hopefully the cost will go down for the technology to be implemented in hot hatches. for the time being, just drool on the LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and the upcoming NSX.

This japanese tech is a real man’s car because of its good resale value. It mirrors my godsend Avanza in terms of aerodynamics and gadgetry.
