Previously reported to be a ‘Clubsport Lightweight,’ Golf GTI, our spy photographers have captured what now appears to be known as the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S. The undisguised model was seen doing some rounds at the Nurburgring, so it’s expected to be revealed soon.
In terms of appearance, the S version looks virtually identical to the Clubsport model, save for a different set of rims (which might be a different set later) and a black strip at the side, with the words ‘Clubsport’ and black tape next to it. Behind it, is perhaps the “S” suffix.
Destined to be more powerful and lighter than the Clubsport, the S version is said to be getting a turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine used in the Seat Leon Cupra 290, but with an uprated figure of 300 hp. That’s 40 hp more than in the Clubsport.
Apart from that, the S model is said to be getting exclusive adjustable suspension and damper settings to cater to the added power. Inside, it is expected that the Clubsport S will have a stripped-out interior, with the rear seats taken out (for less weight) and a roll cage fitted in. All-in-all, the S variant should be lighter than the Clubsport model (1,375 kg).
The Clubsport S is thought to be inspired by the Porsche 911 GT3 Clubsport. This means it will perhaps be looking to cater to those who want to enter track-day events, motorkhanas and hill climbs. It’s said that only 100 units will be made, while a Wothersee introduction in May can be expected.
