Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe launched in Malaysia – GT43, GT53 and GT63S 4Matic+, RM1.1 to RM1.8 mil

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has officially launched the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe in the country. The Gran Turismo, which sits on the automaker’s MRA platform, blends the dynamic capabilities of the two-door AMG GT but adds the practicality of two extra doors and rear seats for everyday use.

The car made its debut here at Sepang today in its range-topping GT 63 S 4Matic+ form, but the local range also consists of two 3.0 litre variants, the GT53 4Matic+ and GT43 4Matic+. The GT 63 S is powered by a M178 4.0 litre V8 from the AMG GT R, although output in the two twin-scroll turbo unit has been bumped up in this application.

The mill – which features a cylinder deactivation system to reduce fuel consumption – offers 630 hp (639 PS) at 5,500 to 6,500 rpm and 900 Nm of torque at 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. Paired with a nine-speed AMG Speedshift MCT 9G automatic transmission, the AMG GT 63 S will do the 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.2 seconds and will get to 315 km/h before topping out.

The AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system offers a Drift Mode, in which the car becomes purely rear-wheel drive. Active rear-wheel steering is also on, where the rear wheels point in the opposite direction to the front wheels for better agility at speeds of up to 100 km/h. The AMG GT 63 S comes equipped with a Dynamic Plus Package as standard, and this brings along with it a rear-axle limited-slip differential.

Design-wise, the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe borrows many design cues from its two-door sibling. These include the Panamerica grille and a front Jet Wing as well as slim tail lights. The front end has of course been revised, with the bonnet shortened – and made higher – to cater for the larger cabin, and the headlight design is reminiscent of that on the CLS. At the back, design cues include a prominent spoiler and trapezoidal exhaust tips.

The Malaysian specification GT 63 S features an AMG exterior carbon-fibre package, along with an AMG aerodynamics package and a Night package. Also on, an AMG performance exhaust system. The headlights are Multibeam LED units with adaptive high-beam assist plus, and the car sits of 21-inch AMG five-hole forged wheels. The car is equipped with AMG high-performance brakes, which feature large compound discs, six-piston calipers – in yellow (and red on the non-S) – at the front and single-piston calipers at the back.

Inside, you’ll find an interior that blends elements of the AMG GT and CLS in its design, and there are some small changes to the presentation – the car gets rectangular switchgear instead of the circular ones on the two-door GT.

The Mercedes-AMG interior features Nappa leather/Dinamica microfibre upholstery and AMG matte carbon-fibre trim. Aside from AMG Performance seats, other AMG-related bits include an AMG Performance steering wheel with Touch Control wrapped in Dinamica and illuminated AMG door scuff plates, and the AMG GT 63 S also comes with yellow seat belts.

A Widescreen Cockpit, which integrates two 12.3-inch HD displays, offers three different presentation themes, these being Classic, Sport and Supersport, the last presenting plenty of AMG-specific performance information.

Equipment and features include a COMAND Online infotainment system along with a new touchpad controller, a Burmester surround sound system, a sliding sunroof, head-up display, wireless charging at both front and rear of the car and Apple CarPlay support. Mod cons include an Air Balance package and Energising comfort control.

The four-door AMG GT offers a couple of rear seating configurations. The debut AMG GT 63 S comes with two individual seats, but the car can be specified with an optional high-class rear seats, which adds a console between the seats.

The console includes an integrated touch pad screen that provides the ability to control things such as ambient lighting and climate control as well as access to AMG-related info. As for boot space, there is 395 litres of volume available, but this is expandable to 1,324 litres with the rear seats folded.

In terms of driver assistance, there’s a Driving Assistance package, which includes Distronic active distance assist and steering assist under its umbrella. The GT 63 S also gets a 360-degree camera, Parktronic, and Keyless-Go hands-free access and an Easy-Pack tailgate. Additionally, there’s an AMG Track Pace feature, which captures and analyses in detail over 80 vehicle-specific data as well as times on the racetrack.

Finally, pricing. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4Matic+ is priced at RM1,798,888, on-the-road without insurance, although this is for a car based exactly on the launch vehicle specification, and so customisation (for example, opting for the high-class seats) will add on to the final price.

The AMG GT 53 4Matic+, meanwhile, is priced from RM1,298,888. Output numbers for the 3.0 litre inline turbocharged six-cylinder variant are 429 hp (435 PS) at 6,100 rpm and 520 Nm at 1,800 to 5,800 rpm.

There’s an EQ Boost starter-alternator – which is sandwiched between the engine and nine-speed AMG Speedshift TCT 9G automatic transmission and is part of the car’s 48-volt on-board electrical system – adds an extra 21 hp (22 PS) and 250 Nm of additional output. Performance figures for the GT 53 include a 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds and a 285 km/h top speed.

As for the AMG GT 43 4Matic+, that goes for RM1,098,888. Its 3.0 litre inline-six mill offers a lower tune of 362 hp (367 PS) at 5,500 to 6,100 rpm and 500 Nm at 1,800 to 4,500 rpm.

Like the GT 53, the GT 43 also has an EQ Boost starter-alternator motor, which provides 21 hp and 250 Nm of torque. On both GT 53 and GT 43, the starter-alternator is linked to an electric auxiliary compressor, which assists the turbocharger at low revs. It manages the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds and goes all the way up to 270 km/h.
