Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport introduced in Malaysia – three-tier tyre range to make market debut next year

Goodyear Malaysia today officially introduced its new Eagle F1 Supersport in the country, the brand’s flagship performance tyre arriving here a year after it was unveiled globally.

However, the introduction of the three-tier range, which consists of the Supersport, SuperSport R and SuperSport RS, was not quite a product launch per se. That’s because the tyres – tagged as ultra ultra high performance (UUHP) designs – will only arrive in shops sometime next year.

The Supersport, which sits above the Asymmetric 5 in the scheme of things, will be the first in, being available in the first quarter of 2020. The new tyre features innovative technologies and compounds that enable significant improvements to braking distances and lap times without neglecting more intangible elements such as feedback during turn-in and braking.

Design elements include stiff tread ribs to ensure responsive directional changes, while a massive closed outside pattern on the tyre’s shoulder provides control during load transfers in corners. The Supersport also features a super-stiff sidewall to further improve handling without unduly compromising ride comfort.

The Supersport, which will take the fight to the likes of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S, will have fitments ranging from 18- to 21-inch diameters, 205 to 305 mm widths and an aspect ratio ranging from 45 to 30. It’s intended for vehicle models such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI, BMW M3, Mercedes-AMG C63 and the Porsche 911 Turbo.

The SuperSport R takes the performance up a notch, offering increased grip levels and steering precision as well as improved cornering stability. The tyre, aimed at buyers owning performance-focused models such as the BMW M4 CS and the Porsche 911 GT3, will be available in sizes ranging from 18- to 21-inch diameters, 205 to 305 mm widths and 25 to 40 aspect ratios.

As for the SuperSport RS, it’s the brand’s most race-focused tire, and rather specific in its application – at point of launch last year, only two fitment sizes were announced for the tyre with a specialised, racing-originated compound, in this case 265/35 ZR20 and 325/30 ZR21, specifically for the Porsche 911 GT2 RS and Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

Given that this was not a product launch outright, no prices were indicated for the new UUHP range, but the company says that in the case of the Supersport, pricing should be very close to that of the Pilot Sport 4 S.

The company also highlighted the Asymmetric 5 and the Asymmetric 3 SUV in what was termed a family introduction today that saw the entire local product portfolio on show. The German-made Asymmetric 5, also announced last December, has already been in shops locally for a while. It replaces the Asymmetric 3 in the product line-up, and is available in 29 fitment sizes, ranging from 17-to 20-inches.

Goodyear Malaysia also took the opportunity to announce that a brand new tyre will be introduced in 2020, and the product will replace the long-serving Eagle F1 Directional 5 in the line-up. It’s expected to make its debut sometime after Q2 next year.

At the launch, the company also displayed products from its other tyre families, namely the Assurance Triplemax 2, Assurance DuraPlus, EfficientGrip and the Wrangler series.
