RON 95 petrol price cap lowered by 3 sen to RM2.05 per litre – ceiling for diesel reduced to RM2.15 per litre

The government has announced it is revising the ceiling price for RON 95 petrol as well as Euro 2M diesel with immediate effect, lowering it by three sen from that currently, which is set at RM2.08 per litre for RON 95 and RM2.18 for diesel.

In a statement issued today, finance minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz said that the ceiling for RON 95 has now been revised to RM2.05 per litre, which means that this is the maximum consumers will have to pay if market prices push the pump prices above that price level, with the government covering the difference through subsidies.

Meanwhile, the ceiling price for diesel has been lowered to RM2.15 per litre. Accordingly, if world oil prices dictate that these fuels are priced below those levels, then the weekly prices of both will be priced cheaper than the capped price.

Tengku Zafrul said that the decision to revise the ceiling price was taken following the recent trend in which market prices of petroleum products were on a sharp increase due to global demand. He said that the government remains committed to reducing the rakyat’s cost of living and will take appropriate steps to balance gvernment subsidy liabilities with needs in order to preserve the welfare and well-being of the people.

The retail price of RON 95, RON 97 and diesel based on an Automatic Price Mechanism (APM) calculation will continue to be announced weekly, each Friday. For the week February 6 to 12, RON 95 is priced at RM1.93 per litre, while RON 97 is priced at RM2.23 per litre. As for Euro 2M diesel, it is currently priced at RM2.11 per litre. Euro 5 diesel, which is technically unregulated and always 10 sen more than standard diesel, is now at RM2.21 per litre.

What a crude joke and super letdown . 3 sen cheaper than PH last price cap for Ron 95.
If YAB Tengku is really keen to help the covid stricken economy, Rm1.80 would be a reasonable price cap.
Now,the price of oil keeps inching up.Petronas wont be losing money this year.
MPs and ADUNs have their 5 meals a day well taken care.
A large section of rakyat now, will have problem putting food on the table,if MCO keeps being extended due to incompetence of those handling the virus.
The rakyat is tired of double standards. We need people like celebrity preacher Ebit Lew who is working tirelessly to help the poor and struggling.

Fully agree with you!!! This is a lie!!! Global oil prices has risen by another 9% last week and yet petrol price here going down?! How come the govt is keeping petrol prices low and affordable? They should be following global pricing so that critics can shut up about expensive fuel prices.

Hyping a ‘Celebrity preacher’. Now there’s something wrong there when a preacher treats himself like a rockstar and what does stars normally do? Seek publicity. We don’t need people that does good things only for ulterior motives. We have a lot of wakil rakyat that are no stars, does not seek fame, yet does goodwill on a daily basis without being asked. We need people like them in the Government, not rockstars like celebrity preachers or reality TV presidents or his supermodel waifu.

In my taman, all businesses are open..some curi curi.”
This is YOUR past comment is it not? How is this any way an incompetence of those handling the virus, as you said? Rakyat is tired of double standards? LMAO! More like the Government, the authorities, and the frontliners are tired with idiotic rakyat that refused to comply with SOP. The Government has laid out clear guidelines (SOP is well published in all media forms), the authorities as doing their enforcement (no interstate transmission since MCO 2.0), the frontliners are doing their part (lesser deaths per infection, more tested).

Ask not what your country has done for you, ask what have you done for your country to help fight Covid.

Reuters reported that oil prices in global markets rose on Tuesday for their seventh straight session of gains, hitting 13-month highs as investors kept speculating that fuel demand will rise while Opec and allied producers keep a lid on supply.

The report said Brent crude settled up US$0.53, or 0.9% higher to US$61.06 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI) for March was at US$58.36 a barrel, up 39 cents or 0.7%.

The session peaks for both benchmarks were the highest since January 2020.

The report added that the markets have rallied since last November as Covid-19 vaccines are being distributed, and as governments and central banks dish out stimulus packages to boost economic activity.

  • Correction. The previous gazetted RM2.08 in 2019 has been cancelled on 3rd June 2020. Between 4th June 2020 until 9th February 2021, there’s no more price cap for petrol! But since crude oil price hovering under USD55, mathematically it never reach the RM2.08 price. Furthermore, the RM2.08 cap in 2019 was done at the time crude oil at USD65.

General subsidy is not sustainable in long term. Government should expedite the long awaiting targeted subsidy using individual rfid touch n go like card given to Malaysian lower income motorist.
