Proton X50 – over 40,000 bookings as of March; wait time now six months, production of Standard halted

Over 40,000 bookings have been received for the Proton X50 up to the end of March. While that strong response has surpassed the company’s expectations for the B-segment SUV, it has also led to a rather significant backlog of orders for it, as The Edge reports.

As of last month, total deliveries of the X50 reached 11,654 units, with March deliveries amounting to 3,513 units. While monthly production has surpassed the 3,000 mark, the automaker says that there is still a significant wait time of six months for the car.

The company is attempting to address that shortfall by increasing production and by prioritising build, a Proton spokesperson told the publication. With higher-end variants accounting for 95% of the orders, the company said it is setting aside production of the Standard variant for the time being.

“The X50 Standard has had the fewest bookings, accounting for only 5%. Due to these circumstances, we decided to temporarily suspend bookings on the Standard variant of the X50 to focus on the larger population of bookings,” the spokesperson said.

“While we want to be able to meet all our customers demands, the simple math of the supply and demand equation requires us to concentrate on the largest base of our X50 customers, which in this case is for the non-Standard variants. The bookings for all other variants continue as normal and we look forward to opening up for the standard variant when delivery is stabilised,” the spokesperson added.

He added that Proton is working closely with its vendors to increase capacity across the line. The 3,500 plus deliveries accomplished last month were above the initial planned capacity, but the company said that it is well on its way to increasing this number for the rest of the year.

“We are currently readjusting to ensure that we get optimum utilisation so as to meet the demand for both the X50 and the X70. Covid-19 brought great disruption to the automotive supply chain, which is predominantly in the Klang Valley, and the area most affected by the pandemic. This was a key choke point. However, we have been able to maintain steady levels of production since February and are on course towards increasing our output over the coming months,” the spokesperson said.

The automaker said its highest production model in 2020 was the Saga, which is built at its Shah Alam plant. This was followed by the Persona and X70, which are built in Tanjung Malim.

    180 days waiting period:
A.Temptation to jump queue ..”kaotim fees involved”to get a fast car
B.Some buyers jump ship, cos they really need a new car fast
    C.The tax holiday,most likely over.
D.More repairs on current car meant for trade in to used car dealer.
So,if you want to wait, may the force be with you.

Waiting period up to 9 months! Crazy! A customer can order today and bang to celebrate can expect to get his car when the baby is born.

Maybe by waiting they can save RM1500 per month for a RM9000 downpayment when the car arrive or maybe just give their arriving car to those who want to cut queue with a small amount of fee.

“Totally incompetent” its a bit harsh.. and in case you didn’t notice, some people here don’t consider it as a national car.. but anyway, I personally think 6 months waiting period is ok as long as they deliver as they promise. I mean, it’s not easy for a sales person to say “but this car’s waiting period will be around 6 months” to a potential customer because they know that this might put off the customer into buying one. If the customer still wants it after knowing the waiting period, that’s just mean they don’t mind. However, I will definitely be disappointed if they suddenly inform me that I had to wait another 2 months after the 6 months period is almost up.

I like the idea of that.. all see “6 months is too long” but didn’t think of the possible benefit. I was wrong also when I almost snapped for my last car purchase which I had to wait for 3 months. Some people see it in a different way but I think if I’m one of those who already book and being informed I had to wait for 6 months, I’d still wait… as long as I have another method of transportation during those waiting period.

Really surprise that seeing more Ativa on the road than the X50 despite X50 roll out much earlier. Proton is rushing to roll out the X50 despite the pre production units are not reach optimum level. It reveal the weakness of the lack of inventory management in Proton. There are some X70 owners claim the spare parts take several months to reach. Hope Proton do better for next model and ready the stock before it roll out.

I believe there are numbers of people who initially desire to take X50 eventually went for its larger sibling X70 or cheaper price Ativa due to long and unknown waiting period. Bear in mind 6 months waiting period is “assumption” only and it may takes long time. My friend at last take X70 with only 1 month waiting period.

I’d like to know which road you saw those as I seen in KL, X50 is the more numerous ones. I only seen a single Ativa and you’d know it instantly because the back is utterly horrible when compare to photos of it.

Unemployment? Business closedown? Reduce salary? Economy rescue package? Not enough to eat? Bank loan defaulting? Bankruptcy? Retrenchment in Malaysia? Must be fake news all these while.

In the middle 90’s you have to wait 6-8 months for Iswara or Wira. You don’t even get a chance to choose the colour. Then there is oppurtunist who hijacked the booking system, using their workers’ name to register the new proton and talking about RV, sold it at 20% more than the RRP. It is an unused car sold at used car dealer.

        • At that time no 9 years hire purchase. RM30k extra at 7% interest which translate to RM300 more installment per month translated into RM400 at that time.
