And the Saga continues. Say hello to yet another chapter of a story that started back in 1985, when the then Malaysian prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad unveiled the first ever Proton Saga. Much has changed since the 80s, but two things have remained the same – amazingly, the then PM is also the current PM, while the Saga remains a solid budget family sedan option. Both are living legends.
This 2019 Proton Saga facelift is a refreshed version of the sedan that debut in September 2016, itself a heavily revised version of the second-generation Saga BLM model that first surfaced in 2008.
There’s no change in the Saga’s footprint and shape – like before, it’s 4,331 mm long, 1,689 mm wide and 1,491 mm tall; while the wheelbase measures 2,465 mm. Ditto the boot space at 420 litres.
As this is a facelift, let’s start with the face. The most expected and obvious change is to the grille, which now incorporates the “Infinite Weave” pattern that made its debut on the X70 SUV. The motif has since been Proton’s signature, and was also used on the 2019 Iriz and Persona facelifts. Replacing the previous twin chrome bar item, the black grille sits between unchanged halogen reflector headlamps.
There’s a small step to the headlamps that accommodate a “bridge” that also underlines the grille; this strip is now significantly more noticeable as it’s in chrome, as opposed to body colour. Now, below this chrome strip lies a thin section of grille, which makes the overall grille area taller.
The Persona-style front bumper is new, and it incorporates larger “air intakes” for a bolder look. The side “intakes” used to house round fog lamps; now, horizontal LED daytime running lamps sit within them, as per the bigger sedan. Like before, the top spec Premium gets front parking sensors in addition to the rear ones.
There are no changes on the side profile except for a bee sting antenna (replaces a long one just above the windscreen) and the new twin five-spoke “Floral Motive” 15-inch alloys, which are wrapped with familiar 185/55 Silverstone Kruizer tyres.
Even as the front end has become bolder, the rear end of the Saga is now simpler. Once again, Proton’s entry sedan takes design inspiration from its bigger brother, the Persona. Gone is the tiger badge and chrome bar above the number plate, replaced by a spaced out Proton script as seen on all new models post X70. Also gone from the top section of the boot are the “VVT” and “Saga” badges, although the latter reappears on the bottom edge of the boot.
The bumper is new, and it incorporates a “diffuser section” that follows the style of the Persona – the black area is slimmer than before and there’s a chrome strip running the width. The central rear fog lamp has been deleted. Also new are thin vertical “vents” at the edges of the bumper, not unlike those on Mercedes-Benz AMG Line cars. The tail lamp design remains, but the bootlid spoiler looks more “wrap around” now, as opposed to sitting flush on top of the boot.
Moving inside, two things are immediately obvious – the general dashboard layout is unchanged, and the centre stack has been modified.
Crowning the latter is a new “floating” colour touchscreen head unit that measures 7.0 inches wide. It’s Android based, but there are no “Hi Proton” functions. Bluetooth and 16GB internal storage is standard and there’s a MirrorLink function for easy pairing of Android smartphones. The screen is hooked up to a reverse camera in the Premium, which is a big improvement over the small window within the rear view mirror.
The new touchscreen has pushed down the air con vents, which along with a new phone slot, takes the slot vacated by the old 2-DIN head unit. There’s even space for “Proton” lettering between the screen and the AC vents. Elsewhere, the steering wheel is a familiar one, but the instrument panel is new – it’s the same one used for the recently-launched 2019 Exora RC, with a big (non-colour) multi-info display between the dials, which are more legible than before thanks to finer fonts.
Other interior changes include a new automatic gear lever (button on the side), new higher quality Tricot headlining (like the X70), new map lights with LED bulbs (spot the Geely signature), a new sun visor with ticket holder and vanity mirror, and new grab handles. The latter is spring loaded and returns softly to position. You’ll also find updated fabric (grey, with quilt pattern) on the seats, and a new flip key fob with a boot release button.
There’s a big change in the powertrain department, but it does not concern the engine, which continues to be the 1.3 litre four-cylinder engine with 95 PS at 5,750 rpm and 120 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. Opt for the base Standard MT and you’ll get a five-speed manual gearbox.
However, the naturally aspirated DOHC VVT engine is no longer paired to a CVT, but a four-speed torque converter automatic gearbox sourced from Hyundai, as used in the Kia Picanto. Why? Geely is already a customer of this 4AT in China, it is a proven unit, and four speeds is par for the budget course – what do you think of the CVT to 4AT switch? In any case, Proton claims improved NVH, braking performance, and ride-handling.
Elsewhere in the hardware department, the 2019 Saga gets uprated bigger brakes (front ventilated discs, rear drums) from the Iriz and Persona, while ABS with EBD and Brake Assist is now standard across the range. Previously, the entry Standard trim level went without this crucial safety feature. The Premium adds on electronic stability control (ESC) and hill-hold assist, but the airbag count remains at two. The Saga has four stars in the ASEAN NCAP crash tests.
Previously, the Saga came in Standard (MT or AT), Executive and Premium trim levels; the Executive has now been dropped, leaving just the Standard MT, Standard AT and the Premium AT.
Lastly, spec differences between the Standard MT/AT and Premium. The base Standard MT car comes with 14-inch steel wheels (185/60 tyres), electric door mirrors with turn signal, remote trunk release, rear spoiler, the new meter panel and MID, ECO light, driver seat height adjustment, tilt steering adjustment, Bluetooth, standard audio with two speakers and one USB port.
Besides the new 4AT gearbox, the Standard AT carries all of the above kit, plus alloy wheels (same size) and two extra USB charging ports. New cabin additions that start from this level include the above-mentioned LED map lights, new headliner and damped grab handles.
It’s the Premium AT version of the “Intelligent Proposition” that gets most of the flashy new kit. Exclusive to the range topper are LED DRLs, 15-inch alloys, steering audio/phone buttons, boot lamp, touchscreen head unit, an extra two speakers (total four), front parking sensors and reverse camera.
Colour options include Snow White, Armoured Silver, Jet Grey, Rosewood Maroon (new, as seen on the Persona) and the hero Ruby Red colour you see here.
Despite the increase in equipment levels, prices have come down – the Saga range now starts at RM32,800 on-the-road without insurance for the Standard MT and RM35,800 for the Standard AT. That’s a drop of a few hundred ringgit, spec-to-spec, although the Standard AT is effectively a replacement for the old Executive CVT. The Premium AT you see here ducks below the RM40k mark at RM39,800, which is around RM2,000 lower than before.
As is now expected from Proton, besides the lower RRP, there are some attractive packages thrown in. First is a one year (or three times) free labour service. The second is low financing rates starting from 2.98% per annum. Third is a comprehensive insurance package, which includes waiver of betterment costs (up to 10 years), agreed value coverage (up to 12 years), key care cover (up to RM1,000), flood relief allowance (up to RM1,000), all driver coverage at no extra cost, and PA for policy holder up to RM15,000. Ask the dealership for the terms and conditions.

Will this be a typical paultan launch story where the post gets updated half a dozen times?
Proton is doing very well now because it is managed by Li Chunrong.
In 6 months with the company, Li Chunrong has transformed Proton from a loss making entity to a company with increasing sales.
In 6 months, Li Chunrong could identify all the problems of PRoton what local CEOs could not identify in 20 years.
We must thank
1) Li Chunrong
2) Geely
3) China
For giving us top quality talent and making our ailing national car company better
Pautan is right.. both Tun n Saga are legends!!
What? Tun M? Li Chunrong was legend now for proton.. Not tun m. Tun m just beeging gov money for saving proton from bankrupcy..
Proton always busuk the name of Hyundai here but today, no shame come and use Hyundai AT
Both our national legends. Tun m, kept all 11k jobs in proton saga. thank u Tun, Li Chunrong continued our great legacy. Gogo Proton !
No Tun, no Proton. Be grateful.
if only Proton management more capable, we dont have to jual Proton to china.
Kemaluan banyak besar. 30 tahun also dunno how to make own gearbox. then everyday hantam Hyundai in every PT posting on Hyundai.
Now, come crawling and use Hyundai gearbox
Indeed. only USP is the Picanto gearbox^^
Saga is still no RV car.
2019 Saga RM40k. 2 years later, sell can only get RM15k
2019 Myvi RM50k. 2 years later can get RM43k
Saga is still King of no RV
Hahaha salesman Perodua dah gelabah. Buktinya ialah komen2 dgn cerita palsu dan rekaan. Pembaca2 dah lali dgn taktik kotor ni lah.
Car never has RV.
Car is liability.
The only one profited from Car trade is Financial Institution provider of hire purchase loan, never is the buyer.
As usual in every Proton launch, SA and fanbois will come here to create a hype and huhuhaha to make an impression that the car is a game changer. Then 1 year later, the car they hyped are game over just like every previous Proton cars…
Past CEOs of Proton should pay compensation and damages to Proton for failing the company.
How did Li Chunrong identify leakages like suppliers and vendors overcharging Proton for 30 years when our local CEOs could not identify this?
This shows, our local CEOs, gaji besar besar sampai millions per annum remuneration, but failed the company big time
you mean company Bapa, founder and advisor,s crony, politically connected/ protected vendors? you mean the CEOs that needed Bapa’s blessings to be appointed?
Past Malaysian CEOs also got share with vendors company mah.
so much kutuk2 4AT.. archaic tech la, dinosaur age la.. ujung2 cium 4AT jugak..
waa.. so good are you.. even IIU not good enuf meh? mind sharing which uni did you graduate from? Cambridge? Harvard? or private community college?
Najib is from Cambridge so shud have gud finance management skills. Deswai we have 1MDB.
Najib did very well in his own and malaysia finance manipulation… Nobody can deny
Now we know Geely engines are 15 year old Mitsubishi 4G63 and tranny are Hyundai’s … So what is Geely but an abomination
No you are wrong … It’s actually a 4G18 engine … Older than the 4G63
Habislah Proton Saga FL! In previous Hyundai articles, our resident troll Mario are always talking bad about Hyundai having bad SC, bad quality, engine problem, etc. Now with Proton Saga FL using Hyundai’s transmission, the Saga FL will have problematic transmission and will be game over soon. So it is better to buy game changing Perodua Bezza with top quality Toyota’s transmission rather than Hyundai’s game over transmission.
I think our resident troll spamming likes for his comment
The King of Upvotes today is hiding. Some articles he got 800 likes alone. But today, mana mahu tanggung malu?
Aku pun drive myvi baru. Qualiti dia memang x boleh pakai…pakai kejap je macam macam sound keluar… macam db sound effect…hantar servuce centre taip2 kali cakap ok…xde sound..aku pun rasa nak jual…tukar saga…at least murah…sekarang macam bayar installment utk besi buruk je…
In the 80s, South Korea was very backward than Malaysia. Infact, Malaysia was light years ahead of South Korea.
Today, terbalik. South Korea is already first world. Malaysia, we are still talking about calligraphy.
Malaysia should have created its own gearbox. So many engineers amongst our overbloated staff in Proton. Buat apa kat opis?
Now money got to flow to South Korea for us to buy the gearboxes
Proton’s engineers came from which uni?
Local abang abang workers cannot manage car companies. Perodua workers are different because they learn to be hardworking. They get their attitude from the Japanese
PRoton can only sell well when it is managed by a Mainland China CEO. So, should get more China CEOs to run our GLC car companies
SH comment, who believe in you?
Proton Boleh
Semangat patriotik? Tapi kenapa bila kerajaan sebut utk membina kereta electrik dan kereta avionic, org kamu menyindirkan kerajaan? Membantah kemajuaan negara sendiri?
Same old, same old.
Proton the same, PM the same.
After 30 years also, transmission Proton want to borrow from others. Why never use their own transmission?
Lazy workers all goyang kaki in opis. All products of UiTM
By your flawed logic, almost all car manufacturers are goyang kaki type la, since brands like BMW, MB, Chrysler get their gearboxes from companies like Aisin Seiki, Hewland, Borg Warner, Ricardo, Tremec, ZF. Aisin AW alone supplies automatic transmissions to 55 automotive manufacturers around the world, virtually every major OEM. These include General Motors, Ford, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Saab, VW, Volvo, Hyundai, MINI among others
What BS are you spewing with your multiple dupes?
well you think product from Lick Cock Wing can design cars ke? lol
Proton fanboys and Proton salesman always come here and hantam Hyundai. Now, tak ada malu and have to use Hyundai technology. Shy Shy Shy
Uhm excuse me Mr. Sama Macam John. The upcoming Ferrari SF90 Stradale will use an 8-speed gearbox from ZF. California, 458, and LaFerrari use Getrag gearboxes. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, Getrag. VW uses LuK and BorgWarner. Bugatti Veyron has a Ricardo gearbox. Nissan GTR, BorgWarner.
So call them lazy, I dare you.
30 years past, you still dunno both national car unable design their own transmission and always borrow others. You goyang kaki until lost memory ar?
all car manufacturers are car assembler.lol
i guess Dyana Sofya and Mat Sabu can both fly kite also la, since they are UiTM grads….
Very nice car and good top management as well congratulations to all Proton team
Thank you Najib for having the foresight for collaboration between Proton and Geely.
Shud thank him for 1MDB too.
you forgot to mention Najib Razak who initiated all this before..
Najib also initiated 1MDB but nobody thank him.
Many good effort and good work goes unappreciated until much later. Just like Vincent van Gogh.
Careful, our game over resident troll Mario will put 200 dislikes on your game changing comments and reply with multiple names. Looks like he haven’t learn his lesson yet and still cause trouble in here.
Wah steal my name so more!!
yb albert and curi nickname berpisah tiada.
U urself framed Kunta back in March. Dont make it sound like we forget LOL
Same company; but totally different outcome. Leadership and work aptitude of CEO Li and previous DRB local mgmt too obvious to ignore..
Apa boleh buat? Local CEOs handpicked by Madey. Since when capability to excel are his main priorities? Just look at his party mates.
lols, liking own comment….
DR.Li works 12 hrs daily Mon-Sat.
Our DRB kiau kah…works 8 hrs, with lots of chit chat teh tarik break with kueh lapis.
Same goes with MAS,requiring a massive bailout again.
HELLO DR.Li…kindly sack the deadwood from the previous mgmt that suck billions of bailout funds from BN gomen.Leeches deserve no mercy.
Why of course, dah memang takdir macam ni.
Pity, in 2019, our Proton has no VSC. Pity Proton has no regard for our lives. Only people who can afford the Premium can have a safer Saga
https://paultan.org/2012/06/27/esp-stability-control-is-a-must-malaysian-motorists-deserve-better-active-safety-in-their-cars/
Safety
Traction control
Stability control
Hill start assist
Front parking sensors
Reverse camera
Someone forgotten to read before trolling. lol!
yea rite.. 2 airbags!, VSC for prem only..
I remember P1 fans said don’t buy “moving coffins” because of no VSC. So now life is important for Prem buyers only, no?
Yeah life is important to Premium buyers, so all Axia, Bezza, Alza, & Saga standard customers should buy Premium, which is only just 4k above. So how many sales will Perodua still remain if all car buyers follow your logic?
and so do perodua, no vsc for axia and people mover alza. not even in the so called “advance” edition. just advance in bodykits i guess….
all new Proton Wira 1.6 Turbo next?
Cvt to 4at = makin kuat makan minyak!
Aiyoo that gas-guzzling campro engine has always makan minyak.
But this is not campro?
Are u proton user with cvt gb? If not… STFU
My nephew Iriz sucks petrol mcm paip bocor…also I see the Saga users very slow at kesas, lotus handling konon, takut tekan minyak ke bang.. Kek
Siti, saya nampak banyak Myvi berhenti kat tepi jalan, kononnya sudah habis minyak, Myvi banyak makan minyak ke kak…BD
All Campro engines suck petrol like crazy. Now use old Hyundai gearbox, it will suck petrol double!
Same to Perodua used 4AT makan minyak banyak kuat.
Premium variant below 40k with insurance can larrrrr. But this 1 not including insurance. Plus insurance same oso become 40k. U think can buy car no need insurance meh?
What argument do you want to highlight actually? Still cheap compare to other variant at with lots of features
This is so funny! In previous Hyundai articles, we can see many game over fake dupes by troll Mario badmouthing Hyundai while promoting Proton. Now his beloved Proton Saga are using Hyundai’s 4AT transmission. So I can conclude that this Proton Saga FL is a game over car with kaput Hyundai gearbox
Wilson Khoo knows nothing about cars. Bashes hyundai for alleged bad quality, but praises Kia which uses the SAME engine, transmission and chassis… topkek
I can imagine that when the CEO took over the post, he must be surprised that how expensive and yet low quality our Proton car is.
Now, slowly he made the right steps by improving the specs and still able to bring down the price that we all Malaysian deserved. Kudos to him!
I smell so many fearful P2 salesmen here. The fear reeks so much it stinks.
Fear it. Dread it. Run from it. It is inevitable!
VW called, they want their front bumper back.
Merc called, they want their back bumper back.
Bumpers aside, stability control only on PREMIUM variant. Safety not standard?
Now, no more reason to buy standard variants, the premium variant is the cheapest sedan in Malaysia can buy with infotainment screen, full safety feature like VSC, TRC….If hyundai 4 speed gear are fuel saving than before, then it’s very good for consumers.
Please Proton, we supported you for so many years. Because of you, all other non national car prices went up few hundred percent the past 30 years.
All we ask for is a car that is safe. In 2019, how could you give us just 2 airbags and no VSC?
I guess we can all agree the saga is a million times better looking than the horrible ugly dugong persona.
Spec is so outdated in 2019. Also need to pay premium for safety. Next.
This is a free country. Nobody is forcing you to buy a Proton Saga. If you want more safety, you can always buy the Perodua Bezza.
Main reason to get Standard variant is if you want a manual transmission.
Even if choosing the Premium model it is still very worthy to own as it below RM40k and comes with full of safety gadgets and infotainment. The new 4 speed AT should perform better compare to existing punch CVT. Overall this is really a good buy for value of money though I still don’t really like its overall exterior and interior design. But the price and spec are attractive.
Kudos Proton. Hyundai 4AT Gearbox
You go to Singapore, a first world country, all the hyundai 6AT transmission there got no problem one! Japanese cars there also no problem unlike what P2 basher here say
Hyundai cars there no problem.
Japanese cars there also no problem.
Only Perodua cars there many problems.
Especially the transmission got big problem
But I thought you said (with multiple names) Hyundai is game over and must be avoided. So how come Proton is smart if they have chosen the gearbox from a game over company that you like to criticise a lot? Habisla Saga FL then…
C’mon this isn’t the 80s or 90s anymore driving a 4AT feels strained especially cruising on highway at 3000+rpm the minum in today’s world is 6AT even 5AT is barely enough. A CVT is much effficient for Small light weight cars. When buying a car 4AT is a 100% no for me…don’t like the droning noise on highway and rough and tall gearing feels like a old fart using all its might to move…people who praise 4AT should not be driving let alone misleading the market to dinosaur age.
CVT is fuel efficient but response of acceleration is slowest among all transmission. The current Proton using “Punch” brand of CVT is lousy CVT, unlike Nissan, Honda, Toyota etc those CVT are much better.
The cost of using 6AT is higher than using 4AT, though the gearbox is same or similar to Kia Picanto but Hyundai have to modify in order to pair and attached with Proton Saga. Saga is entry level model and if you looking for a better spec car you can pay more for X70 with 6AT. FYI, all Perodua models are using 4AT and so does the new Aruz price at RM70k+.
I use to bash on Proton but this time they make the right choice. The current Proton CVT performance is what you expect, unless you thought you are genius than the Geely, Perodua and Hyundai engineers.
what do you think of the CVT to 4AT switch? Proof the cvt sucks.. Congratz buyers..
so much kutuk2 4AT.. archaic tech la, dinosaur age la.. ujung2 cium 4AT jugak..
Finally the stupid CVT is gone!
I like the feel of the CVT. On the other hand it’s understandable that they wanted to bring the price down to compete with the Bezza.
Sayonara expensive Bezza
My question is what the screen looks like from behind
New Saga cheaper than Bezza RM14k!!!
Greedy Perodua.
14k cheaper but still more people buy bezza how? Desperado protong.
Previos Saga less competitive, now new Saga more features with lower price. If those people still buy Bezza is sohai.
One year too late. Now only Proton plays catch up. People would already move up to buy vios or city with better features.
Biji saga don’t talk like bij. Kereta baru keluar. Wait la. See end of August proton sales.
Watevaaaa it is, perodua cars always win. Wat to do. Talk oso no use. Talk so much to anger urself only.
It Should be better then my previous BLM 1.6 Manual. Minor Twitch and yu’ll get the best out of the standard.
Hidup Tun! Proton Baru! Saga our living legends!!
Well done Geely……

Oh yeah. Mitsubishi were trying to transfer the whip and chain locks technology plus the slave labouring knowhow but you see, Proton workers are too ethical and respectful of fellow human beings to comprehend what these Japs were trying to teach. Once Proton management board found out, they kicked them Japs all the way back to Nippon and disallowed them to come back for 10 years. Eventually they returned back via Tan Chong Motors, another bloodsucker of their employees. I’m glad Proton didn’t follow their culture of slavery.
BMW doesn’t make their own gearbox and nobody is complaining.
BS argument. So the new Supra is using BMW Z4 body. Why Toyota dont use their 100 years experience in automotive in building their own Supra?
BS and the P2 salesman troll, berpisah tiada. Nothing logical comes out from his mouth.
The Saga might be a good seller but still cannot lawan Myvi.
Since November 2018 till July, already about 150,000 Myvis have been sold.
In the same period, less than 8000 Sagas have been sold
8000 vs 150,000 – I think the rakyat has spoken which is the
1) Better Car
2) Safer Car
3) More Spacious Car
4) More economical car
5) Better RV car
You cannot do comparison like that, the saga just launch.
Saleman pr2 detected
The Myvi is super duper uncomfortable. Saga is.
Are you dumb? Both cars are different segment
You deserve a cookie
The rear bumper is straight out of mercedes a-class
the rim also comes from new a-class haiyo p1 sport rim design also lost idea or what? kasi bengkok2 sikit rim then paste at saga.
I’d say good job to Proton for the 2019 Saga update(They already did good with the Iriz and Persona too).
I always found the 2016 Saga to be underwhelming. It is a cheap car, but equipment wise, the Bezza at the same time has lot more going on to it. And not having ABS for the base Standard model is what I found unacceptable. Sure the Saga had better ride and handling, but that’s the only advantage I saw the Saga had when it launched in 2016 over the Bezza.
Also I’d say kudos to Proton for finally ditching that Punch CVT, but I’m disappointed at the same time because why only the Saga gets it, and the Iriz still has the CVT… (And they went on with how they “improved” the CVT when they launched the updated Iriz). But it is what it is.
Such a pity, Proton does not care for the lives of Malaysians.
In this day and age, you sell a car with no VSC and only 2 airbags. And indirectly force people to buy a more expensive car like the Premium just to get VSC
VSC has been made compulsory in all cars all over the world the past 15 years.
It is a pity in Malaysia, our National car company does not care for the lives of Malaysians
According to Malaysian statistics, if cars had VSC, there would be a reduction of 80% of all accidents on our roads.
I disagree coz accidents can be avoided by attitude of the driver… this kind of technology just helps reducing impact of accidents. To avoid accidents people must change their driving’s attitude and PLEASE obey the rules… that’s how we can reduce numbers of accidents in our country
I thought in 2016. government have made it mandatory to have traction control for new car?
To be fair, you should’ve also mentioned Perodua since some of their model’s variants don’t come with VSC too. And, also Honda’s Jazz lowest variant only has two airbags with no VSC.
The really dun care Malaysian’s life is Perodua and the CEO also admit that Perodua no need build Asean NCAP 5 stars car
So why is godsakes Perodua still selling the mofo Alza without VSC?
Hi Paultan guys,
Why do the steering wheel still carrying old PROTON logo? The rest of the logos on the car are new logo without the PROTON lettering.
This was also a problem on the 2016 Saga.
Do note that the windshield also have old Proton logos.
Old Ptoton logo? The watermelon?
dont ask pt la, ask that p1 why they taking 2012 unsold preves’ steering wheel n hantam to that “new” saga.
it is proven this saga only use old stock saja maaa..
Really love the bumper. Saw it this evening at the showroom. Overall looks nice and fresh. A proper small sedan. If only they put push start button.
The lower front bumper is a direct copy of the Volkswagen Golf R-Line
The premium specs new saga does shine in almost every aspect compare to Axia.
(Except fuel consumption – a well-known fact)
Expected to draw some of the market share from Axia and Bezza
I hope so.
Accent masih dijual dalam negara ni ke?
dia (Wilson Khoo) ni tau apa benda. Selalu comment rubbish. tak perlu baca lah!
Habislah game over Proton Saga FL. Now this car is using gearbox from a game over korean company that Mario hated a lot and this sedan are expected to kaput soon.
Danny, since there is CVT, transmission manufacturer always promote CVT as a cost saving option and also weight less compare to a gearbox. Now I guess we have a very good example that can prove how much lighter is a CVT compare to a 4-speed AT gearbox. How much weight does the SAGA gain on this new model with 4-speed AT?
Hah? Cvt Cost saving?silap pakai minyak, jahanam, tak boleh nak lasak, spin sikit, “durian” keluar, dalam tu pulak ada steel belt, berterabur???tak usah cerita, too many wear parts dalam GB Cvt….
Haha! What’s Durian Keluar?
It’s 2019 we’re still talking about 4 speed Auto. Wake up Proton!
Pentol….perodua masih pakai gb auto tak bising….pergi sana complain,
U not wake up, still sleeping
Its an A segment car. If its not 4 speed unit , what more you want . You pay peanuts you get monkey
Is the new proton saga using timing belt or timing chain? Pls help to adv.
Any problem using timing belt? New Saga RM14k cheaper than Bezza, u can change 100 times. Furthermore, using timing belt noise level lower than timing chain. A lot of big car manufacturer also go for timing belt to get better NVH.
Pls tell us which big car manufacturers go for timing belt instead of timing chain for NVH, i can’t think of any car manufacturers would trade in reliability for NVH. Also, NVH is about cabin insulation, nothing to do with belt or chain. If you want to talk about noise, timing belt is way more noisy.
Theoricaly timing belt quieter but it wont be noticetable difference as covered by the engine running sound.
There is no any advantage timing belt over the timing chain.
The different are the chain no need to change until 400,000km above but the belt need to be changed when nearing 100,000km. The true fact is timing belt is an unwanted old tech that required some effort to change and a big factor majority people choosing the perodua over the proton.
Nearing to year 2020 already..come on proton and geely..i hopes the next launch car no more campro and timing belt please.
For those experts who still debate timing belt are better. Honda civic gen 1-7 still using timing belt, 2006 onwards or gen 8 – latest were using the more WORRY FREE timing chain already. The world are moving u got to improve.
Still timing belt, is really a matter, drive until 80,000km u will having a dilemma to change it scare it to snap. It’s not a simple work which require 3hrs labours to disassemble with estimate cost of rm800.
Great move proton to eliminate the CVT gearbox, aside of unpleasant drive at low speed. The CVT oil change cost also expensive than AT, need to change filter and oil sum pan with a total more than rm500.
I’ll choose the saga over bezza though, for better safety and handling. Both cars great for doing grab.
That’s a popular scare tactic used by competitors and a load of BS. I’ve used a car running a timing belt for 9 years and 130,000km and there was not a single problem. The belt was changed when the car hit 60,000km. Yes, it IS a scare tactic guys. Don’t be taken in so easily.
Gear box from hyundai… What a shame for proton. Wasted millions on a
RnD yet begging from other car maker
Transmissions is tough to design. Even big companies source their transmissions from others.
Shame? Kau cakap sama perodua kenapa pakai toyota punya enjen? patut keluar enjen gearbox sendiri.bodoh tu simpan untuk diri sendiri.
You have rather limited knowledge don’t you. Sad.
So, BMW begging gearbox from ZF? Ferrari also begging from Getrag? It’s amazing what kind of stupid comments a biased mind can make.
I thought it is a requirement now for any new cars are mandatory to have traction control? Announced by The announcement was made by ex transport minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai on 2016????
https://paultan.org/2016/11/29/stability-control-mandatory-in-malaysia-by-june-2018/
Safety
Traction control
Stability control
Hill start assist
Front parking sensors
Reverse camera
Someone here obviously failed to read before trolling. lol!
Gomen changed before June 2018, so not mandatory anymore. Tenkiu PH for continue endangering our lives.
With this recent Saga facelit with reduced prices together with Persona and Iriz 2019 facelift, majority carbuyers will definitely not going to purchase Game Over Poodua. Because everyone knows that Poodua has been cheat and misled, some more insulting customers as Poodua always rebadging and downgrading ancient jepunis models and tech for Axai, Biza and Alza. Some more, Poodua also selling Axai, Biza and Alza all together with 2 airbags without VSC, coupled with tin cola can chassis.
Don’t forget, Poodua are also removing water temperature gauge for Myvi as compare to previous Myvi where previous Myvi have temperature gauge, thus very dangerous to car users. Majority People in Malaysia will still prefer good national car, by buying more Proton than Game Over Poodua (yes, previously we hate Proton due to countless quality issues and poor customer service in the past, but since they are improving product value together with China Geely leadership, majority Malaysian start supporting them again).
Whenever Campro engine is used forever LAP SAP car it is
Why dig old story? And this is not Campro. Go dig Msia history la. Better
I have say PaulTan. The trolling and toxic Perodua fanboyism is getting out of hand here. No only do I see a continuing line of repeated comments from earlier posts -many which are factually wrong- I also see the same comments by different names, clearly your user registration system is flawed if the same person registers multiple accounts to comment. Perhaps you might wanna tone down their toxicism a bit?
True that brah Alan. Perhaps john might wanna tone down their political toxicism and inuendos a bit. This just a auto blogsite after all.
Are you the same Alan with same comments as John? All your comments are always same words and same sentences.
Looks like we know who is the troll
Alan and john , berpisah tiada
“Same words and same sentences”. Interesting….. can you point which exactly are those “words and sentences” or is that just your own personal assumption? Aside that you personally don’t add anything educated yourself. If you see something not following your agenda, then people are immediately trolls. It’s easier to stick labels rather than being smart and educated.
Nice update on the dashboard with the touchscreen but it looked quite busy with so many layers on top.
I would prefer the CVT than a 4 speed automatic. if it’s a 5 speed or 6 speed automatic, then it’s a better option than the CVT.
Even at this price, premium variant easily beats any perodua cars with more features and larger spaces
Good car
Its time for a real world fuel consumption test against the old cvt model
I believe it will consume more (the fact that no words on fuel economy in the launch). Proton purposely choose clutch based CVT to save fuel rather than torque converter CVT. It’s interesting to see the comparison.
Habislah bezza! Saga have drl oledi.. Bezza no drl..
I rather buy bezza rm50k with dual vvti engine than saga rm40k with lousy campro engine..
campro suck petrol like crazy. Now use outdated old Hyundai gearbox, be prepared for worse
Dude, that 4AT gearbox is using same technologies as existing Hyundai’s 6AT and 8AT. It is definitely not outdated.
I would like to propose a different option if you have 32k to 40k to spend on a car – get a used car instead.
1. Spend solid 5 hours on the internet to learn the basic of checking a used car.
2. Go to mudah.my and the likes and look for used cars that are going for less than 40k.
3. Inspect the at least 10 cars before you make buying decision.
4. There is a good chance that you get a car in good condition with decent safety features, and most importantly better value of money.
5. And yes, you learn to a thing or two about car that would really helpful during your car ownership.
You haven’t considered the out-of-warranty repairs, higher interest rates, higher maintenance costs due to age, and of course other problems that may not be visible at first. I’ve owned both new and used cars, each have their pros and cons.
VL22 is right. FYI, 2017 before married i bought wira 2005 auto fuel injection for rm8900. Total repaired cost rm7-9k. Now i wanna sell price is around 8k. Then 2018 i bought honda civic ek3 rm19k. Total repaired cost is rm10k-13k with unsolved problem from gearbox wiring, crankshaft wear. Wanna sell aroung 19k-22k. Countless time in and out to workshop. I don’t know if I’m unlucky buyer. But i do know 2nd hand car is suck! If only i buy a new saga or bezza should be peace of mind. But if u really want buy used care, choose good car n not too old car. But i really recommend to buy a new car that now already cheap equiped with good safety features.
Now owning for 1 year NP300 with zero prob. Planning to buy saga premium over bezza for my with go to work n send my kids to school. Value for money plus 10k cheaper than bezza. Tq
Is that full spec car? I can see body color behind the wheels..i dont think i saw that for 2016 model..
Proton should have ditched the Punch CVT long time ago …it’s the right decision. That cvt is sluggish and noisy!
good job and anytime the hyundai 4AT is the preference!!!
I believe is it still value for money when we compare it with Bezza and Axia full spec.
Look at the price , Way cheaper then Perodua and of course Proton learn from mistake.
Proton was talented and in everyday but due to poor management and corruption things went terribly down.
As far I know Proton Waja was a good design with value for money but the issue was with the QC, Dont tell me Proton`s QC department or Head QC department have no eyes.
They approve such a low cheap plastic materiel for the car ..even it repeats for Preve and Suprima.
I am using proton Suprima ,such good car with perfect handling and design ..the only thing i hate is the low quality plastic. Before Geely comes in Proton can just close their eyes and approve the plastic.
Anyway its happy to see Proton is coming up now.
My family had ever own 2 Saga (1 saga is 1990 and 1 is BLM), 2 Iswara, 3 Wira, 2 Waja, 1 Gen2 and 1 Perdana V6 in the past 30 years.
Among these Proton models I personally feel the plastic material used in Waja is the most solid one. However when it comes to Gen2 the plastic material is extremely poor quality, worst ever I have seen. And all models after Gen2 such as Preve, Exora, Suprima etc has improved slightly but not as solid as Waja.
The weak part of Waja is all door handles will spoilt after years, absorber issue and really high fuel consumption. The 2 waja we owned are using Mitsubishi engine and it was 1L run only 8km or RM0.25 per km.
Malaysian paid 600billion ringgit for today proton. With Rm600 billion we can buy Geely…. What is so great then?
In which world did you get that Proton cost Rm600Billion? Do share your link here.
Salesmen trolls pulling everything out of their behinds today. This Saga is their greatest fear.
i ve tested. ok.. its good. no more bloating throttle feel from the cvt. response is acceptably good fo 1.3 . respectively. linear. although a bit of hunting due to overdrive of the final gear at 2600 rpm at 100km/h..good and of course favorable for highway.
batter than the cvt final ratio which is 2700 at 100km/h.
2700rpm is on the high side. while 2600rpm is consideraly lower side 3120rpm for 120km/h is ok. not that stressful.
not to forget the steering is lighter,,,like it.
bigger brakes too.
definitely saga 2019 is batter than saga vvt.
Akhirnya proton dah pandai buat kereta. 4Speed auto tranny ni dah lama org lain pakai utk budget car. Customer yg berilmu akan tahu trans mana yg bagus dan tahan lama. Yg sembang kencang sebenarnya silap gaya tak tahu pun cvt tur apa. Ok bai.
does hyundai even still use tht transmission?
Yes, current n previous gen picanto n previous gen rio.
I do foresee a lot of these new saga will be bolted with aftermarket turbos in no time.
Where i can get inhibitor switch(code number 42700 23510 ) for proton saga 2019 model?
