The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has released the vehicle sales data for the month of May 2022, announcing that a total of 49,603 new vehicles were delivered to buyers last month. This is a drop of 6,610 units from the 56,213 vehicles sold in April, translating to a 11.8% decrease in volume.
According to the association, the decrease was attributed to a short working month due to the Hari Raya festive period as well as from a shortage of chips/components and logistics delay disruptions, which continue to affect some makes.
Compared to the same month in 2021, May’s sales was 5.08% (or 2,396 units) higher, while the year-to-date total for the first five months of 2022 stood at 265,656 units, ahead by 7.44% (or 18,406 units) over the 247,250 units managed during the same period last year.
The association projected sales in June to be better than May, with the sales tax exemption still in place until June 30 and an agressive push for sales by car companies driving things forward. It however added that the shortage of chips and components would continue to have an impact on deliveries.
Additionally, despite the SST exemption ending as scheduled on June 30, the announcement made by finance minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz yesterday should see bookings for vehicles surge tremendously in the next couple of weeks. The government has said it will allow the SST exemption to be applied for any vehicle booked before July 1 and registered before March 31, 2023.
