DRB-Hicom Automotive HiTech Valley in Tg Malim still in discussion; lapsing MOU with Geely to be extended

Back in April this year, DRB-Hicom launched the development plan of the Automotive Hi-Tech Valley (AHTV), which will based in Tanjung Malim to serve as an automotive industry hub for the ASEAN region.

During the launch, DRB-Hicom signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Geely Holding Group – both are major shareholders of Proton – to jointly develop AHTV as well as identify vendors and investors for the hub. A separate MOU was also inked with the Perak state government to identify suitable land in the area for AHTV.

It has been six months since the MOUs were signed, and we now have some updates on the project’s progression. According to recent Bursa filings, DRB-Hicom is currently in talks with Geely Holding Group to extend the duration of its MOU with the Chinese automotive group due to original MOU set to lapse its six-month validity period.

In a separate filing, the Malaysian corporation said it is still in discussions with the Perak state government to finalise a definitive collaboration agreement.

When it was first revealed, DRB-Hicom said the project was still in its development stage, with no timeline given regarding its completion. However, we were told then that once the first phase of AHTV is completed, it will offer more than 160,000 job opportunities, with the final target being some 370,000 jobs.

    • Better to close shop gameover proton soon and proton sales will be placed at 4th than honda next year onwards because everyone knows that why proton quality is already becoming rubbish and while buying honda cars have better quality car. Like all brands are also becoming way dated and can’t beat honda fastest car. Even modifying R3, AMG, M Power but their performance still useless and can’t beat fastest honda.

  • Those land belonged to proton before drb hicom took it off its books and sold only the factory to geely. I hope geely will not fall for this scam and relocate entire factory else where. Now they want to co develop or sell those land to proton-geely again.

Sceptics also thought Geely would shift over production from Sweden to China when bought over Volvo Cars but instead they threw in more money and gave them independence to chart their future and boy was it worth it, with COTY awards everywhere. If you have doubts on Proton’s future, look no further than Volvo Cars own fate.

Hopefully proton can move forward to develop improves drive train for A and B segment car. The persona is the best value under rm60k car to buy consider it’s nice interior and solid handling, but the dated timing belt campro and clutch based punch cvt really need to be replaced with something better.
