Tesla recalls nearly 240,000 vehicles in the US for rear-view camera failure due to car computer shorting

Tesla has issued its first recall for the 2025 calendar year which sees 239,382 vehicles in the United States being affected by failing rear-view cameras, which can increase the possibility of a crash.

According to Electrek, the recall involves 2024-2025 model year Model 3 units built between January 15, 2024 and December 12, 2024; 2025-2025 MY Model S units built between April 2024, 2024 and November 27, 2024; 2023-2025 MY Model X units built between January 25, 2023 and December 2, 2024; as well as 2023-2025 Model Y units built between May 23, 2024 and December 16, 2023.

“On a small percentage of affected vehicles, upon vehicle power up, a reverse current may cause a shorting failure on the car computer board, resulting in the loss of rear-view camera functionality, which does not comply with FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) 111, S5.5 and S6.2,” the carmaker wrote in its recall notice.

Potentially frying the car’s computer at startup is the bigger issue but only the rear-view camera is mentioned because that system, if it fails, poses a safety risk and Tesla are legally required to report it to the United States’ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Tesla says it noticed an increase in car computer failures on November 21, 2024, with investigations revealing several factors that could cause the issue. These include specific software and hardware configurations, coupled with colder temperatures. Reports indicate a revision of the Hardware 4 (HW4) computer introduced last November is susceptible to the shorting, which can affect the functionality of Autopilot and active safety features.

As of December 30, 2024, the company has identified 887 warranty claims related to the issue. In the remedy section of the recall notice, Tesla said it has been issuing an over-the-air (OTA) software update since December 18, 2024 that “changes the vehicle power up sequence to prevent the shorting failure condition to the primary and/or secondary power component.

“No further action is necessary from owners of affected vehicles that are equipped with software release 2024.44.25.3, 2024.45.25.6 or a later release if an affected vehicle has not experienced the shorting failure condition or stress that may lead to the shorting failure condition. If a vehicle was impacted by this condition prior to installing software release 2024.44.25.3, 2024.45.25.6 or a later release, Tesla will replace the vehicle’s car computer at no cost to the customer.” it added.
