Volkswagen Saveiro car-based ‘ute’

Volkswagen Saveiro

Volkswagen has converted its South American centric Volkswagen Gol into a front wheel drive car-based single cab pickup, or “ute”, whatever you prefer calling it. The Gol-based ute is called the Volkswagen Saveiro and is powered by a 1.6 liter inline-4 flex-fuel engine thats shared with the Gol, producing 104 horses at 5,250rpm and 156Nm of torque at 2,500rpm if you fuel it with ethanol (minus 2 horses and 3Nm if you use regular petrol). The Saveiro is not a new name – it’s traditionally used a old time ago for car-based pickups in the Volkswagen family, and the last model was based on the Volkswagen Fox if I am not mistaken.

Maybe Proton should target the South American and African market
with their Jumbuck. This kind of cheap and rugged transportation
    seems suitable for their terrain.
Front black bumper looks similar to Wira/Arena.

the good old station-wagon is still the cheap and best car cum goods transporter here previuosly. Unfortunately, it was killed by our cops who always on the look-out to get duit kopi from those driving it.

somehow, the structure of the saveiro reminded me of the concept arena/jumbuck replacement, don’t you think?

Volkswagen is dying here in Malaysia. Their branch in Ipoh has already closed. Maybe their price is not right because they want to put same level as other German marque like BMW & Merce. But most Malaysian perceive VW like those days model Beatles is for peoples car. Their price should be around Toyota or Honda, I’m sure it will a hit.

    1.6 engine
    102 hp and 153Nm of
    vs
1.6 too – our ‘old’ CPS engine
    125 hp and 150Nm

    yeah.. that’s also a comparison..

Why VW not dump thier best engine one there?

Wonder what if VW do the same thing like what Vauxhall did to their Ute .. put a big VXR8 engine in the ute …

OMG! what happened to VW?? it looks so cheap. Proton must scrap Arena replacement project amid Aussie skeptism to Proton and brand preference to VW.

i think Saveiro’s engine is underpowered for a pick-up truck. would be good if it’s a diesel engine. but i heard in Brazil, diesel engines are prohibited from being installed on passenger cars.

haha some frogs under the coconut shell here…

VW Saveiro has already been around since early 80’s, before proton even produced a single car.

    Helmi,
VW in Ipoh may be slow moving but here in KL
we see lots of GTI’s & Beetles around.
Probably when their plant in Indon is up&about
we should get to see cheaper/Asean based models
    being introduced. ie Touran etc

About the issue of VW in Ipoh… that’s funny/ironic, considering there was once a suggestion to build a “Volkswagen City” in Perak…

Hi there, i´m a brazilian fan of the site.

Saveiro is a “Gol” based pickup since it has born in mid 80´s, it has never been derived from Fox. Only the rear lamps had been inspired on WV Arena in this new model.

“OMG! what happened to VW?? it looks so cheap”: It´s intencionally an entry pickup (so it´s simple and with a small engine on purpose).

Diesel engines are prohibited from being installed on passenger cars in Brazil.

Can the Campro engine run on ethanol (alcohol made of sugar cane) ?

As it was said before, the Saveiro is a cheap car for the brasilian contractor and market vendor. Their preference is low running costs, not the most modern and powerful engine…. ;)
