BYD to unveil Premier e6 variant and S6DM SUV in Detroit

As part of the going green strategy it will be presenting at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month, BYD Auto will be giving the Premier version of its e6 five-seat crossover and S6DM dual-mode electric SUV their world debuts at the show.

The S6DM SUV is what BYD calls the world’s first independent 4WD dual-mode electric SUV. It can do over 60 km purely on electric power and over 500 km in extended range with its 2.0 litre petrol block helping things along. Drivetrain features include a 10 kW electric motor tagged M1 working the front wheels, while a 75 kW unit (M2) powers the rear wheels, and there’s a six-speed dual-clutch transmission in the mix.

Meanwhile, the Premier variant of the e6 will feature a more dynamic and sporty exterior design (the bog standard e6 is the one in the pix), among other things. Equipped with a BYD Iron-phosphate “FE” battery, it takes only 40 minutes to fully charge the e6 on the 100 kW fast charging cabinet or six hours via the 10kW standard charging pole; specs include a 300 km range on urban roads and a top speed of 140 kph.

Very impressive mileage for an electric power SUV indeed especially for a new company just started as new as in 2002. Also plus points having dual -clutch transmission and .already debuting in a Detroit Motor show for an 8-year old company.
These Chinese are brilliant. No wonder Warren Buffet has a 10% stake in the Co.

hopefully Paultan can do a full test drive review in China to test it’s performance :) if they’re true as advertised, this is a significant milestone in battery technology and hybrid vehicles in general :)

Even BYD is going to have six-speed dual-clutch transmission in the mix… How about our local auto manufacturers?

Almost all the cars from China have some rather “unique” design, not gonna criticize that now, though i am not a fan. But 1 thing I really dun understand is why almost all new cars coming out from Chinese car manufacturers are having the naming scheme like an alphabet follow by a number?? Either there’s a name in front or just plain alphabet + number. With such a forgettable (or unforgettable in a bad way for some) exterior design, seriously, those names are not very helpful either, especially when you have like hundreds new cars surfacing every year in China.

Wondering why they can’t just put a proper name to the new cars? I know it works for European car manufacturers, and perhaps Hyundai (though I am not liking the ‘i” name thing as well), but somehow it just doesn’t work for the car manufacturers in China, in my opinion.

Names are a pretty sticky affair.

      1) names can be copywrited – not that it really bothers the Chinese anyway

      2) names can mean different things in different cultures and languages

      3) direct translation of names into English sometimes end up funny

      4) numbers and characters usually don’t carry the unfortunate curse of a bad product – because of its nondescriptness, people tend to forget. (it took Hyundai how many years to clean up the “Sonata” name? They even dropped the “Excel” name and switched it to Avante/Elantra after the disaster of the Excel.)

      5) Blame the Germans. They have always used alphanumetic to denote models.

      6) They are not italians. For some reason car names all sound better in Italian……LOL.

It doesn’t always work. Look at Honda (or more acurately Acura) – they lost a lot of identity when they moved from very established names to indescript alphanumeric names. RL what? Renamed Legend??

From environmental point of view it make no difference since it still has a 2.0 liter engine that release carbon and pollutes!

Ya you are right, they also copy Honda for 4 tyres, because Honda CRV also have 4 tyres.

You could expect China to be at the forefront of electric vehicle development in the coming few years.

The writing is on the wall that China cannot continue to depend on oil reserves, especially considering the growing automotive demands and strain that this will put on dependence on oil.

I really don’t care how it copies its design. But as long as it works, we all win.
