The river next to National Library is from Setapak.

Don’t be a genius only know to blame others!

    • It still shows that the SMART project fail because did not consider this area, or divert this area in case of emergency .

My opinion, better expand LRT station rather than build MRT below the ground level in KL. The soil strata itself cause billion to strengthen due to its problematic lime stone underground and the land acquisition also need billion.. and MRT should be not a tunnel for flood diversion..

consider the budget. if those tunnel involve the river from setapak, it may cost more. if this happen, then people will shout. then what those people in the G can do? sit comfortably of course la people angry, even do their job still people angry.
as for the MRT, though I think is inappropriate and out of topic, i agree with you that it shouldn’t be build. but may be it just me, because i don’t know what they know

MRT is different issue, but you’ll have the idea why it’s needed if you look at the start and end of MRT line; Sg Buloh and Kajang. try driving from these area in the morning or go there in the afternoon during the rush hour.

engineers only plan and design for specific task / need / requirements, which also depends on the budget and timeframe. if they design it to be used only for 1 river or for specific area, why should you blame it for a problem in another area? it’s like you’re saying PLUS highway is a failure because a massive jam still happening in Kuantan?
diverting the water to smart tunnel means water from other area would be channelled to the area which smart tunnel supposed to protect, putting the area into the risk of bigger flood. and what if the smart tunnel already being activated because the water level there are also increasing? go find a video about smart tunnel and look how much water they divert during heavy rainfall. to divert more water into the smart tunnel will put extra burden on the tunnel and jeopardizing the entire system.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0
      • Sg.Bonus nothing to do with SMART tunnel. SMART tunnel already effectively divert Sg.Klang water to Desa Pond via Sg.Kerayong. Gov built the tunnel to cover high risk area. Last time Dang Wangi, Kompleks Wilayah area always flood because water from Sg.Klang. Go read the info at SMART tunnel website. Jangan main hantam saja, baca dulu la oii.

Smart tunnel is just waste of money, better use the money to clean up the longkang or drainage system around KL. Penang has done that, put in all the effort to clean up the clogged drain, the state municipal council has done a good job, Penang river was once the dirtiest river in Malaysia. They also take precaution action to trim the trees along the roadside to prevent unnecessary incident happen during heavy rain. Now, we dont see flash flood happen so often in Penang! Another thing, we dont use plastic bag anymore that partly contribute to flash flood.

Penangites has done something right! have you?

… err.. and 1 more thing… Penang is an island… surrounded by SEA… where all the freaking water go… SO, it has to be a really-really-really bad drainage system to get Penang flooded… whereas KL.. is in the middle of a valley… and got few meeting point of river in the city area… and the sea is far away… so.. maybe we can blame gomen on other side of thing.. let say.. EDUCATION level?… Other countries expert from all over the world say it a good solution… and here we are.. being very typical narrow minded Malaysian politician..

Agreed. Those who wishes to comment should study properly about the demographics of KL before posting baseless shitty crap here.

Everyone should already know that the Smart Tunnel starts from Kampung Berembang near Jelatek (I mean, for the drain tunnel), which is already far away from the city centre, and ends at Taman Desa near Desa Waterpark, plus another entry near Kampung Pandan roundabout. If it rains cats and dogs and pigs in the city centre but at the same time not so heavy at any of the three entry points of the Smart Tunnel, then the tunnel won’t be flooded at all even if Jalan Tun Razak has already flooded. That’s what is known as the “micro climate”.

In a nutshell, there’s no use to blame the Smart Tunnel just because of some idiots out there who throws rubbish as they wish, clogging the rivers and drains in KL. It is those idiotic morons who are supposed to be thrown away into Klang river.

I think it is due to the latter – Smart Tunnel only diverts the water from Kampung Berembang to Taman Desa. If it rains cats and dogs and pigs in the city centre but at the same time becomes sunny at Kampung Berembang and Taman Desa, then no water will be diverted from the city centre. It is a special micro climate case that has caused the city to be flooded but at the same time the tunnel can be used without even being closed.

Some of our people along with some immigrants and smokers need to learn to be civilized humans and stop the BL**DY LITTERING. And NEVER pour used cooking oil down the drains, it’ll also block the pipes/drains. Some other reasons including insufficient drainage systems I think that caused floods, which sometimes shouldn’t happen.

The flooding that drowned hundreds of cars, created havoc, well the smart did its job in drying out the water from the city, but surely, there will still be flooding in certain areas due to low lying lands that we cannot do anything unless re-surface the whole capital! which means demolish buildings and reconstructing them.. and that is impossible.

Government is helping, flooding occurs, its part of nature. No technology can ever surpass the power of nature, but technology can HELP reduce the damage.

  • we should really stop cutting down our rainforest and flattening hills as this really impacted our rain schedual. I remembered how rain was following seasons, now, it doesnt.

Hills and mountains in the mid-peninsular helps cloud formation and precipitation near coastal regions, especially from north-east to south-east, which means precipitation at the face of high-ground. Now, when the hills are gone, it just mixes like a blender above us and precipitate randomly, resulting in constant unscheduled rain – thus floods.

people should stop moving around as much, this resulted in developers constantly building new residential developments for us to call our 2nd or 3rd home. If we stay in one place, and commute electrically (eg. ERL), government will see this fact and improve public infrastructure, and developers would re-consider flattening another hill.

One more thing that I can see in smaller towns that are developing, houses, shophouses, buildings, roads and streets are built very close by each other. Every cm of land is utilised to build stuff. No consideration for green buffer zones.

In smaller towns/cities, this can be clearly seen because the development is at slower pace. What used to be secondary jungle five years ago is now populated by offices and shoplots and houses.

No need to talk about pedestrian walk-way or “kaki-lima”… almost non-existance. So, people tend to drive everywhere even for short trips… because it is so dangerous and tedious to walk: snatch thieves, alley dogs, stupid car drivers, mat rempit, potholes, lalang etc…

I would love to take a stroll, especially on the weekends, to get some newspapers and roti canai at the nearby shops. But the way cars are driven in my housing areas and the alley dogs (who are the owners?!!!) and there is no pedestrian walk-way anyway…. I have to walk by the road side!!! :(

      Oh… such a crap. :(

Agreed. Back then we used to know when is the time of the year that rains most beforehand so that we can plan holidays and even feasts. Now, every month also got thunderstorms and heavy rains like hell. Even if you check radar images from Meterological Department daily, the rainfall pattern in Klang Valley is now different from most places in Malaysia which already still predictable. It’s very easy to say that as “act of God”, but the blame is actually to us and not God.

We talk a lot about greenhouse effects and global warming but we do nothing rather than just talk shit only. We still drive solo even though it is already obvious that cars are major pollutants in KL and major contributors to global warming. When the government plans to build MRT, those so-called “rich” idiots oppose by saying crap like “the road to my house will be jammed” or something like that. When we see any bikers on the road, we simply label them as mat rempits even though they use bikes just for daily commuting to work place or to campus; mat rempits are actually a very tiny fraction among the bikers. In the end, God punishes us in cash for all our wrongdoings.

It is time for us to change our attitude, or else everyday will be rain acid in KL.

An idiotic moron is always an idiotic moron. Tunnels are very expensive, especially in cities, you asshole! Even to build it underground also need to pay the land owners. That’s another reason why this tunnel costs billions of ringgit.

Another thing, toll highways including the Smart tunnel are not constructed by using the taxpayers’ money. If the government use the taxpayers’ money to build highways, then there will be no more allocation for any other development priorities especially, education and health. That’s why those highways are tolled. Look at those so-called “free” highways overseas, their governments have to raise the petrol tax kaw2 to fund those highways. So it’s just the same anyways.

It rained heavily here in part of UK today and there was a couple of serious Flash flood in several roads in the area that I live that makes road impassable to cars. Who should UK citizens blame? Clogged Drains? Not having a good stormwater drain network? Corrupt Government?

Remember the Hailstones and fallen trees few weeks ago in subang jaya? Who you people going to blame for that? MPSJ for not trimming the trees? It is ACT OF NATURE / GOD. PLEASE grow up and stop putting the blame on the government. The weather been really bad these days due to Climate Change. Even you have perfect stormwater drainage system, nothing can stop a freak weather.

Even if a country have good buffer towards natural disaster like very good drainage system

Oh come on! UK building and drainage system are not design to handle such amount of rain water because the country doesnt have tropical climate like us ok?

BUT, do you know, instead of doing proper drainage, building in the UK are to within heavy amount of snowfall because it will clog and add burden the roof in every building,in simple, their building are design to withstand heavy snowfall every winter because they have climate and weather like this!

Imagine this,a country who knows their their weather and climate like malaysia,we paid the Meteorological every year thru tax to give them facility to undergo sampling of rain and forecasting every year for what? It suppose to give estimation of rain forecast from year to year and to advice what the country should do to improve their drainage.

AND what we get? A capital city center that will flood or clog ON EVERY single rain just to live up to our city name KUALA LUMPUR?

You didn’t get my point it seems.

First of all yes UK is not designed to handle rain like Malaysia, BUT DID I MENTIONED ANYWHERE that it rained like Malaysia yesterday in UK? It Rained Yesterday in parts of UK in the sense that they consider as heavy and some roads get flooded. My point is the weather been really violent lately. Open your eyes and start seeing around the world. Places that aren’t suppose to flood, are flooding, rarely have snow, are now having heavy snowfall, cold countries are getting warmer.

Do you see Jalan Tun Razak Flood badly everytime it Rains? No right? It’s only yesterday it flooded so badly and people like you, only know to blame others instead of looking it from a broader perspective.

Ofcourse, changes need to be done, but in any country, how can a Government (Even first world countries) thru various means, know for sure to what extend the rain will be for tomorrow or next month? Improvement takes time (months and years), and usually things happen beyond expectation rather rapidly. Do you think Japanese Government foresee a 9 Richter scale Earthquake to happen?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
        • darrensp on Dec 14, 2011 at 2:40 pm

No,u dont get my point instead.

UK drainage doesnt design to handle water volume like what it should be in malaysia but what they did is they design to handle wild weather like snow because it will clog up the roof and the roof will collapse if too heavy volume of snow the roof. now the problem is,people in the country can adapt to survive and learn from their mistake to build a better system to cope with it.why cant we?

That is what Meteorological Department do all the time, giving forecast of the rain volume in the country, providing every council like DBKL how they should build a better drainage system to cope with all the weather changes.well if they cant do their work, who else is any better than them do it ?

Japanese knew they are on the earthquake ring, they produce a series of building code and regulation, giving earthquake drill to children since school time and they build their building just to withstand earthquake, just because it happens always and they keep on improving time to time.why cant we?

If you ask me,not just Jalan Tun Razak get flooded all the time,is everywhere get flooded all the time even some housing area.u try driving around in KL during the rain,u can easily see all this drainage are too shallow to handle all this rain,20 min of rain and that’s it,flooded.

Now,Malaysia Instead of a producing a good city planning,is producing a people like u,who just say is god’s fault that all this crappy weather going on and we not going to improve the situation but just stand and blame the god for it like what your idol samy vellu does when 31 out of 33 pillar of MRR2 unsafe for vehicle and posing danger, parliament roof leaking after heavy rain and he just say, is “global warming”.

Eventhough I am anti-BN and a PR supporter, this is not really the fault of SMART. SMART has done a lot to avoid flood in KL, but SMART is not GOD ok. It cannot divert flood water from ALL OF KL. Only certain areas where it is designated. You can check the SMART map if you want to know. I can’t believe the amount of moronic comments here by people with no ideas…..due to inconsiderate people (most likely some of the morons here) who simply dumps garbage everywhere and the global warming, climates are changing and flood is happening everywhere in the world. The existing SMART tunnel does not cover WHOLE of Kuala Lumpur… I presume more to be build in the future.

If you think of who to be blamed in this incidence… the CITIZENS should be on top of the list! Like old Malay sayings… “tuding satu jari pada orang lain, lagi empat jari tertuding pada diri sendiri”!

Motorists throwing rubbish during driving/ traffic stops is still a common sight in KL. This very bad habit is done by the adults, and the children at the back of the car learn from it and eventually accept it as a norm… Thus “Takpe buang sampah keluar dari cermin kereta, nanti DBKL datang sapu” culture continues….

its just good DBKL have a plan to improve the situation since its becoming an annual event. Smart tunnel didn’t come as a project by DBKL. but DBKL got to find a way to improve and prevent more flooding.

however it need the people help too. I seldom back to Malaysia now but last month when I was at KL, I still see some ill behavior….someone driving an Accord, stop by monsoon drain and throw his bag of goodies into the drain. It might not be everyone but sikit sikit jadi bukit.

Yes we can’t 100% blame Gov but still gov need to act to spend more on controlling the situation as its the Capital. some community at the same time need to learn and improve their behavior.

they might just propose some MINI smart tunnel. Its ok as long as cost is effective and flood get improved.

but still….making sure people don’t simple throw rubbish into river and clogging it is needed. Worst case is just fence up all the river. Look ugly but at least can help….in a way.

Saw this is what Beijing did at some of their water channel to send water to treatment plant since people still need a long way to improve and the strong wind during winter/ spring like to kick rubbish near by into the channel
