2016 Chevrolet Malibu teased ahead of New York debut

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu has been teased ahead of its upcoming debut at the 2015 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) this April. Chevy’s D-segment contender for the local market is aimed squarely at the likes of the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata and Nissan Teana.

Along with the teaser, Chevrolet has also disclosed several details about the next-generation Malibu including “an entirely new architecture” which should see it decrease in overall weight thanks to liberal application of high-strength steel in the construction – a total of 136 kg is said to have been trimmed.

Apart from a weight cut, rear passengers inside the new Malibu would appreciate the increased leg room courtesy of an extended wheelbase of 101 mm from the new chassis. Unfortunately for us, that’s as far as Chevy is willing to go in terms of letting info bleed out.

Styling wise, the next-gen Chevrolet Malibu will have critics, apparently, “blown away” by its “Corvette-inspired styling”. Ed Welburn, GM’s vice president of Global Design, has stated that it will feature a “groundbreaking design with a masterful understanding of proportions”.

While the teaser shot gives little away, one can see that the new car will possess a roofline that has been pushed further back for a coupe-like appearance while the shorter, rear overhang helps to further cement its swooping profile.

A second leaked shot, of which we can assume is a promotional teaser for the 2015 NYIAS, has also leaked online. In said image, Chevrolet has dropped what is, arguably, the biggest hint to its plans for this year – the introduction of five revamped models that could include the Camaro and Sonic hatchback.

Judging by the sneak previews, I assume the 5 cars would be a Camaro, Malibu, Spark/Beat, Cruze, and maybe an Impala
