With yesterday’s fuel price increase now in place (effective today), how apt that there’s now a new car that uses even less fuel than before, but is faster than ever. This updated Porsche Panamera Diesel consumes just 6.4 litres per 100 km (down 0.1 litre), yet is able to get to 100 km/h in just 6.0 seconds (0.8 quicker).

As promised at the model facelift reveal, the new Panamera Diesel gets 300 hp from its 3.0 litre turbodiesel V6 engine; 50 hp more than before. Torque is up by a full 100 Nm to 650 Nm, while top speed has been bumped up to 259 km/h from the previous model’s 244 km/h top end.

The engine is all new, with only the block carried over. The crankshaft and pistons have all been redesigned, and the water-cooled turbocharger is Porsche’s first, giving a higher boost pressure of 3.0 bar (up from 2.5 bar). Amazing that Porsche has managed to coax similar outputs to Audi’s twin-turbo 3.0 BiTDI V6 from a single turbo.

The eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission has been retuned to fit the new engine output too. It now has longer top gears to reduce fuel consumption and improve comfort at higher speeds, while the first four ratios are made shorter to boost its get-up-and-go characteristics.

Next to changes to the chassis (stiffer anti-roll bars all around), Porsche is also offering a controlled rear-axle differential lock with Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+) as standard on the diesel – a feature previously reserved for the Panamera’s higher performance petrol variants. It improves agility and steering precision while delivering greater driving stability.

Although the new 300 hp Porsche Panamera Diesel will replace the current 250 hp model in global markets (with German-market deliveries beginning January), we’ve been told that Malaysia will not get the 300 hp model, due to the quality of our diesel fuel. Our recently-facelifted Panamera range starts at RM740,000 through official importer Sime Darby Auto Performance.
