Proton Pick-up Concept to be unveiled at Alami Proton

Talk about breaking new grounds at Proton! At the media preview of the Alami Proton carnival, to be held at the brand’s CoE facility from October 3 to 4, it was announced that the brand will unveil a concept pick-up truck! Yes, you read that right – the Proton Pick-up Concept will make its public debut at the carnival.

Unfortunately, those keen on feasting their eyes on said show car will have to drop by the carnival to see it in the flesh tomorrow as members of the media were prohibited from publishing photographs of the Proton Pick-up Concept. As a result, we are going to try our best to describe how the truck looks like with words – the rest will depend on how strong your imagination is.

Picture this, if you will, a Ford F-150 Raptor-inspired front end attached to the body of a what is undoubtedly a Proton Exora MPV. The entire front fascia has been reworked to incorporate a gaping grille with honeycomb-like details. Within said assembly, a thick silver bar spans the entire length of the front end – the single row of LED headlights are embedded within the horizontal bar itself.

Lower down, chunky-looking matte black body cladding with fog lights embedded within complete the aggressive look in front. Moving on to the side, the biggest clue to its Exora roots lie in the shape of the doors and the A-pillar while a peek into the interior reveals the exact same dash architecture as the MPV.

As expected, black 16-inch wheels shod with off-road tyres are to be found. Moving on to the rear, the bed appears to ape the look of the SsangYong Actyon Sports pick-up as it features a rather short overall length – a cue that certainly adds to its already dynamic outlook.

Additionally, a matte black horizontal bar spans the entire length of the tailgate, mimicking the layout of the front end. Within said bar, the Proton lettering is to found inscribed across. The taillights are absolutely tiny units placed within much larger housings while a single tailpipe is to be found along with a rear step panel.

As mentioned, for an actual visual look at the Proton Pick-up Concept, do swing by the Alami Proton carnival this Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 7 pm. Not going to be anywhere near Proton’s CoE this weekend? Fret not, just hang tight for our gallery post of the concept when the embargo lifts.

Old Proton Arena aka Jumback was a big failure. But before, jus tlike now, Proton will say it is their greatest invention and the perfect pick up.

All the owners of Jumback and even Juara are now crying. Infact, the Juara, Jumback have become junk status.

      How to trust Proton now?

      • It wasnt so hot here, but just ask the Aussies. They loved’em. Cheaper than a normal pickup but have better carrying load than a car boot.
They even have a sub segment for these vehicles called UTE.

proton do need a small Crossover , its the current craze n they join the party , pickups i dont think they make so much economic sence ,although i can see it as not very expensive to do since the underpinnings are of those in the exora , but they dont have an engine for it , if its not a diesel its not gonna work

    A new Proton Jumbuck/ Arena ? About time !

I recall reading an article which detailed when Proton originally proposed the Wira-based pick-up truck concept to Mitsubishi; “Good luck with that !”… that was Mitsubishi’s response. But somehow, Proton managed to re-engineer the Wira into a pick-up truck, which came to be the Arena/ Jumbuck. Mitsubishi’s reaction ? obama_not_bad. jpg

Believe it or not, the Jumbuck/ Arena holds the highest domestic resale value among all the Protons, possibly higher even than the Satria GTi. You’re welcome to search on Mudah if you don’t believe me.

The Jumbuck/ Arena also has one of the highest export to domestic sales ratio among all the Protons. In other words, Proton exported more Jumbuck/ Arena’s than they sold locally. Export markets included Australia, New Zealand, the U.K., Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan and South Africa (got a few more).

Of course, 99% of you probably won’t care, because the Jumbuck/ Arena received a 1-star ANCAP rating… but know that it is based on early 1990s technology.

If Proton plans to make a new Jumbuck/ Arena, I don’t see why not. It’s a niche model which will do really well in some export markets. And if it’s based on the Proton P2 platform (which is shared by the Exora, Prevé & Suprima S), then it will help increase economies of scale too. It could also use the 1.6 CamPro Turbo, and probably manage a 4-star ANCAP rating (due to the lack of new-gen safety like AEB).

    • Shoehorn a SuprimaS engine into it. The turbo torque should give good pulling power

  • What pick up? Half-cut all unsold suprima and wahlah… a pick up, just like Arena.

    • Not so easy to half-cut a SuprimaS since the passenger cell uses HPF. Dun belip be just ask our bomba. They need to buy higher powered Jaws of Life to cut the pillars
