Budget 2017: RM55 bil to build East Coast Rail line, RM100 mil to repair Gua Musang-Tumpat train tracks

Prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced at today’s Budget 2017 speech the allocation of RM55 billion for the development of the East Coast Rail Line project, which is a 600 km-long line that will connect the Klang Valley with the East Coast.

The line will start from Port Klang, connecting townships such as ITT Gombak, Bentong, Mentakab, Kuantan, Kemaman, Kerteh, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Bharu and will end in Tumpat.

Meanwhile, RM100 million will be allocated for the repairs to the Gua Musang-Tumpat sector of the East Coast railway line that was destroyed during floods, while the frequency of ETS services for the Johor Bahru-Padang Besar route are to be increased.

A total of 19 sets of trains are to be acquired – at a total cost of RM1.1 billion – in stages until 2019.

        1. From the comments, we know who are wearing red shirts.
        2. Those wearing lemon shirts sure pengsan seeing this astronomical figure in this kind of economic situations.
        3. ‘Menggiatkan’ is a grey word.
        4. Spoon feeding to the extreme, all in the name of public transport, interstate one, and during stormy season. Why not just build a bridge costing rm fifty five thousand billions to connect Johor to Sarawak and put railway and bus express lanes to make it pengangkutan awam. Me and my associates sure get more USD.
        5. You know there is a perkataan seerti for sawan, that is geela babe; you minus the khinzir word and there you are, you get the conclusion.

Finally, may I suggest to Obama in USA to increase GST USA to 24%, and add 10 diferent mandatory licences for each small/big shops/businesses/ companies, each costing 10k and to be renewed 6-monthly.

Wah, RM55 billion. Betul kah? The figure is going higher and higher. Soon, after the project, it will be RM100 billion. As with all projects in Malaysia, cost always doubles from initial cost.

Do we need such an expensive cost in the light that Government has no money and education and health sector is sending old people back home?

Hello Government of Malaysia, your rail line is not as important as your hospitals and universities. Hospital tak ada ubat and many hospitals have to close down.

University students are stranded with no money. Some even have to prostitute themselves to remain in overseas.

If they run the track to Kuantan and connect with kerteh kuantan petronas track then I think there will be some economic benefit. The minimal is at least there is an option going east coast during great KL exodus during festival holidays…

Did you know oil and gas that Peninsular people used comes from the East Coast? Who are you to deny the east coast people their rights to a more efficient transport system? Pity them for being stuck in traffic for a long time during the festive season. At least this will marginally reduce the congestion.

With a proper rail system in place, it can spur economic development like what has happened in the West Coast.

As a professional, read, do your homework and don’t bash the government all the time.

Most if NOT all the products from the Kertih Plant are exported out thru the terminals/Ports there.Distillates,Plastics, etc.

It is Dangerous to Carry it by tankers or even cargo train. PLUS it is not economical.Unless it is used by local manufacturers in the West Coast. Not much quantity.

So , what Malaysian Govn bashing ?

Wasting Rm55 billion which can be spend in Education, Health, Water, telecommunications which will directly benefit Rakyat.

Note , who is going to managed the trains, tracks, etc when it is completed. KTM …. Bunch of $@#$!@#$#$E@

Festival season … USES ROAD via cars and Buses.

NOT Train. Maybe you should try using the train. Which I bet you have NOT even try.

As for the Spurring the Economic growth. You need MANPOWER and with HIGH Skill.

Why has the EAST coast NOT grown even in the 1980 till 2010, billions has be pumped into the area ??? Please ADVISE.

Yea, get your facts right NumbNUTTS…Eastcoast contribute alot to the country economic growth, especially in petroleum & travel industry. Furthermore, it will be a great alternative for the EC people to travel in a more comfortable way besides via air transportation….

& yea, we might not like the way the gov do things along this time, but sometimes when they do some good things to the people, it is totally nothing wrong with that…

Funny really….we have to wait for budget day to know a fund is allocated tk repair a damaged rail tract during flood which happen years ago when it should be repaired immediately.
If they really think then they know its just about connecting the state but improving the transport in the state itself.I really dont bother driving to east coast once a year i heavy jam during festive season. My concern is on day to day driving which has become worst and i dont have proper public transport at my area.

  • Almost 92M perkilometer all in for the new ECRL. This kind of development is not suitable for yearly budget announcement. It should be under Rancangan Malaysia. On what basis does the figure 55B came from? How would it be disburse? It is like Penang spent 150M++ for feasibility study of the tunnel. Why cant we have a proper integrated planning for 20 years.

Well…I think 55 billion is just a rough figure. Building rail line might cost more you have to acquire peoples land. If there are existing line it will cost less but if there is no existing line then there will have to do a fisibilaty study first. Upgrading roads might not be the only answer every year when festive season there will be traffic jam. Why not extend the east coast highway to Kelantan at the same time built rail track. For the first time Kelantan get funding from federal gov. My first thought is for the next 5 years we have an Agong from Kelantan.
