Fuel prices to go up if global oil prices rise – KPDNKK

According to minister of domestic trade, cooperatives and consumerism (KPDNKK) Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, recent global events may have an impact on world oil prices. He said this could have an impact on fuel prices in Malaysia, Bernama reports.

“The price of fuel in Malaysia is determined based on the global price of crude oil. Thus, if there is a price increase on the world stage it is certain that the price of gasoline and diesel in Malaysia will also rise,” he told reporters earlier this week.

“However, I do not want to speculate about it (the price of fuel). The government has already implemented a managed float on a weekly basis for the pricing of fuel to replace the previous monthly system,” he added.

The new fuel ceiling price mechanism, in which fuel prices are announced on a weekly basis instead of monthly, began on March 29. The current weekly retail price announced last Wednesday (from April 6 to 12) for RON95 petrol rose three sen to RM2.16 per litre, while RON97 rose two sen to RM2.43 per litre, and diesel fell three sen to RM2.08 per litre.

The pricing announcement are made every Wednesday, with the new weekly prices coming into effect at midnight the following day.
