Today, AXA Affin General Insurance (AAGI) has launched AXA FlexiDrive, a new motor insurance that uses telematics to enable buyers to save money on their insurance premiums, as well as to provide a range of emergency and vehicle recovery services.
At the heart of the service is a small device installed at the car’s battery, which tracks certain parameters such as speed, harsh acceleration and braking as well as mileage to establish the owner’s driving behaviour. Safe driving enables customers to accumulate discounts of up to 20% on their premiums, which they will be able to enjoy upon their next renewal.
In addition, the device will also be able to detect an accident, and whether the impact exceeds a pre-determined severity threshold; once verified, emergency medical assistance will be dispatched to the exact crash location. Owners will also be notified if any vehicle sabotage or damage is detected, and in the case of theft, AXA will work with the police to recover the vehicle once a police report is received.
An AXA FlexiDrive app is also available, allowing users to view their Safe Driving Discounts, received personalised driving tips and check their car battery status on their smartphones. There’s no extra cost to the service – a standard comprehensive motor insurance premium and a refundable deposit of RM70 for the device is all that’s required, and customers will not be penalised for harsh driving.
The device, produced by CSE (same company that does Cobra alarm and tracking), features GPS, a SIM card and a accelerometer, but while users will be able to track the location of their car at any time using the AXA FlexiDrive app, AXA will only receive telematics for tracking driving behaviour. All data collected is used in compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) and will be handled confidentially.
“We are committed to providing better value and experience to our motor insurance customers, while contributing to improved road safety in Malaysia. According to the Malaysia Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and the General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) statistics, one road accident occurs every minute and one car is stolen every 24 minutes in Malaysia.
“I am confident that AXA FlexiDrive will help us make strides in improving road and vehicle safety in Malaysia,” said AAGI CEO Emmanuel Nivet.

Sounds interesting. My car insurance expires in April next year. Should I just cancel and take up this AXA one?
Sign me up please…
I don’t trust that the insurance companies will keep my data safe, their objective is profit and if the data I provide can add profits to them by reselling or packaging it into marketing data then I’m sure they will do so.
What recourse do I have under the PDPA if the insurance companies resell this data? Consumer protection in Malaysia is woefully inadequate as it is.
Ur protection is, if u dun like it then dun use it. If AXA forcing down to their customers, go for others since market is now liberalised.
same answer Minister gave about GST. “Kalau barang barang ada GST, janganlah beli barang barang itu!”
Kalau brokoli mahal, jangan makan brokoli…makanlah kangkung.
When u have a choice, its called free world.
tell that to jakim
Really? Since when JAKIM is into insurance? What packages and coverage do they have? What r the rates and do they have roadside assist? What about towing?
caveman answer. like petrol he say nobody forces you to buy petrol
Yes. U dun have. Just use public transports
Ask yourself, what use is your driving behaviour to someone else? Who would buy it?
Your worries are well acknowledged, however this is the future that’s heading to us. For now we have the choice to embrace it or not but why not be a part of it? We can benefit from lower premium if we are uncle drivers lol.
I agree with you. I asked their representative (technical and sellers) about the ‘ownership’ of the data, and no surprise, they know nothing about it. Or they pretend to have no knowledge about it. Either way, it smells fishy.
Good device… free gps locator and all… wait… does this mean they can track my speed? Well err.. good… I am a slow driver and always obey speed limit.
Always obey huh. Highway downhill +5km/h, too bad, forfeit discount. I doubt they’ll acknowledge elevation and angle since first Gen device. Don’t be lab rat, let the first batch take the hit.
Ya..had thinking about it to. Seems like all insurance company are findings way to categorize driver into high risk. Even want to look at service record. If service at bengkel Abu, bengkel Ahchong, bengkel Mutu is consider high risk? Becoz not do maintenance at authorize service center?
Something connected to car battery. Will it void car warranty kah? And will it keep sucking power like Cobra system when car is turn off?
Device has its own battery I think.
No. It says right there in article that it connects to car battery. Just like old Cobra system.
Oh… didn’t know that!
Who is the hot babe ?

Wa thanks. 514k followers. not interesting though. But found babiambi so happy.
This device is interesting. But it’s still a conventional plan? What happened to bnm new directive? Aren’t the companies supposed to offer something new? Typical.. Lazy companies happy with their 8% market share, collude with each other, fix prices, and screw the consumer. If for real, just publish self assessment tool to determine insurance price online and we can compare for ourselves. Will they ever do it? No globes down under
hmmm..beauty & the b…abe
Don’t know his name
Insurance company tracking your car and your driving? No thanks. They will have plenty of bullets to reject your claim when the day comes.
No. On the contrary it will help your claims to be processed faster due to more reliable data including accident reconstruction report
Correction. It will help your claim be processed faster so that the rejection can be made faster too.
Law abiding drivers rejoice as your safe driving will save you money in the long run.
Me minus you equals blue…
car warranty avoid or not by install this.. for sure involve wire tapping or modification on the battery for installation ???
No. AXA fully guarantees the same in case something happens. Although nothing will happen
No modification on wiring required. I already have exactly the same device installed in my Alphard 20 series, but the app comes from CSE, not insurance company. I guess the insurance company is using a customised app instead.
Only 2 wires and the wires are connected to the positive and negative terminal..no tapping to other wires..therefore the car warranty is still valid
The last thing I want is for the insurance company to share my personal data with other insurance companies and thereby affecting my rating.
No, thank you.

Off-topic… still insurance related..
Anyone knows where i can find details on the new way our premiums are calculated? Especially on the risk assessment parts…
Things such as;
Do you have made any claims before… (how far back does this taken into account? Since we bought the car? 5 years back? 2 years back?
Have you committed major traffic offences… (again how far back does this goes? what are considered as major offences?)
The thing about now liberalised is that, each company will have their own mechanism for calculations. U will need to shop around and get the best deal, but not right now cuz still in transition.
Same questions – BNM – Jawabla!
BNM regulates insurance industry?????
Yes. An ignorant question.
Maybe you should ask around about the bad customer service from CSE. How good can this CSE be when company like Proton also removed them as vendor.
Not a very useful comment. You sound like a disgruntled customer (which of course every company will have regardless of how good their customer service is). If you check their website they are supplying many locally assembled car brands including BMW, Honda, Toyota, Perodua, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Isuzu.. I don’t think just anyone can achieve this.. And…Pretty sure they still supply Proton as well.
Anything that can track you will and can be used against you in the court of law.. It’s just a matter of time before law enforcer finds a way yo use those speeding data and smack a speeding ticket up your ass..
Ok, now my insurance NCB is already maxed out at 55%. So, this 20% discount, is it on top of that 55%?
Here’s what I’ve gathered:
1. The 20% discount will be banked into your account upon the next renewal within 14 days.
2. If you renewed online, you’ll get additional 10% off on the spot (RIP insurance agents). So if you NCB is maxed out at 55% + 10% (online renewal discount + 20% FlexiDrive discount, that’s a cool 85% savings on your insurance premium. You pay only 15% for insurance premium.
3. There is a clause indicating that a security deposit will be required upon opting into FlexiDrive plan (yes SmartDrive users can convert to FlexiDrive without additional cost). So the question is how much will the device deposit cost? Seeing that its from Cobra, it won’t be cheap, I guess…
4. If you drive like a racer, you won’t get any discount and they won’t penalize you. They have a scoring system that is based on vehicle speed, mileage and harsh driving. If you fall into red zone, you get 0% discounts and yellow gives you 10%. Fall into green zone and enjoy 20% discount.
5. GPS tracker is good for car safety but if they gonna just install it right on the 12v battery, it will be easily removed by car thief. Since its GPS, a sim card is required and should be included in the package. Not to sure who will bear the cost of the sim service fee. Since its attached to the 12v battery, it will drain the battery but by how much is yet to be known. Battery status is also shown via the app.
6. Users can download app and monitor their vehicle (just like any other GPS device)
7. Seriously, insurance company can’t sell your data due to law, but truth nobody will be interested as to where you drive day in, day out. The only person that would be interested is probably your spouse, but even that doesn’t exactly tell you the exact building you’re in (massage parlor LOL!), unless you drive into the building. Even that, GPS devices goes offline the moment you enter indoor parking space.
Just a short update. I’ve got the device installed on my vehicle last weekend with no additional charge. Neither did they ask me for any security deposit. Note that the tracker/telemetry system is Italian made by Meta Systems, (not Cobra Connex). Apparently, the installer claimed that UMW Toyota uses Meta System tracker. Since I drive a hybrid car, installation was not straight forward as advertised as they had to fiddle with the car interior fuse box. Instead of directly hooking the tracker to the 12v battery, they actually installed it in the cabin (near the driver side right kick panel). However, I made sure none of the car’s wiring is cut and the installer used fuse tap to feed power to the device.
I also notice an additional device was installed (Wi 2.0 Radio Remote Controller) which was claimed to be necessary for hybrid cars with auto-stop feature. However, I Googled up the device and learnt that it’s actually a device that sends alert to the mobile app when the car alarm is triggered. Pretty cool eh?
Also to note is the mobile app AXA FlexiDrive is pretty basic and you’ll need to pay RM19.90 if you want to enable the premium “Smart Track” features. Only then you get the features such as Locate Car, Real Time Tracking, Trip Review and Secure Mode. It says “Free Trial” but Apple appstore will charge RM19.90 once you unlock it. Will test out this feature in the coming days. As for the app itself, it shows estimated discounts that you’ve earned based on your driving style. So far I’ve already earned around RM40 LOL!
I just got the device last weekend as well. A bit upset that the security stuff isn’t included that we had to buy it for RM19.90. It’s not clear whether it’s monthly thing or yearly?
If you are into telematics without having to sell your soul to these insurance companies, use KATSANA (car tracker) or its cousin DRIVEMARK (telematic phone app).
How does one sign up for this online? I’m trying to sign up on AXA affin website and I got redirected to financial-link website but can’t see anywhere to add on Flexi Drive
The installation deposit is RM70. That immediately give them the 70 ringgit per car.
In big data environment, driving habit of Malaysian is a good data to sell to car makers, tyre manufacturers & etc.
This is just the beginning that we enjoy max 20% discount but what if later they try determine our premium based on Driver driving pattern group (Risk group: high, medium, low) ?
They will also knows where you part your car, car locked/not locked, engine off/on, accelerating & etc. Its more easier to know that what caused theft & accident. We knows what will these info lead to.
If this devise is from Car Maker, it would be more convincing but from an Insurance Company….. I am in doubt of the intention.
