UMW to nearly double its stake in Perodua to 70.6%

UMW Holdings has announced that it has made two separate share purchase offers in a deal that will eventually see it increasing its stake in Perodua to 70.6%, The Star reports. It currently has a 38% stake in the second national car manufacturer.

The first part of the deal is the purchase of a 50.07% stake in auto parts company MBM Resources from Med-Bumikar Mara for RM501 million. The acquisition of this will trigger a mandatory offer for the rest of the shares in MBM Resources, which currently owns a 22.58% stake in Perodua.

The planned takeover of MBM Resources – which is involved in the manufacture of automotive parts/products and also the distribution and dealership of brands such as Perodua, Daihatsu, Hino, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen and Volvo in the country – will raise UMW’s effective interest in Perodua to 60.6%.

UMW to nearly double its stake in Perodua to 70.6%

The second offer is to buy a 10% stake in Perodua from Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) for RM417.5 million in a cash-and-new shares deal. The completion of these deals will see UMW raising its stake in Perodua to 70.6%.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia, UMW said the move will allow it to increase its strategic stake in Perodua as well as expand its exposure in the commercial vehicle segment through MBM Resources’ network. “The proposed acquisitions are consistent with the company’s strategy to enhance its core businesses in the automotive, equipment and manufacturing and engineering segments,” it said.

“It will allow the company to further improve its prospects in the automotive segment via leveraging on Perodua’s strength in the national car segment, coupled with the company’s existing presence in the non-national car segment via the Toyota marque,” it added.

TOYOTA also smartly, by providing same engine family 1.5cc to P2 cars though Daihatsu, but at lower Horse power and Torque when compared to Vios 1.5

Government should stop buying Proton cars for the hundreds of Government Departments as well as enforcement departments such as PDRM, Kastam etc.

It is high time Government replace all their Proton models with Perodua. This is because, Perodua is now officially 70.6% Government owned.

Better to order from Perodua as the money will circulate within Malaysia and UMW, which is fully Government owned.

You buy Proton, it is a China car. Our Government’s money will go back to China. Why support a foreign company? Better to support a local Malaysian company like Perodua and UMW

What’s so smart about Toyota? Hehehe. Toyota is smarter bcos they can sell their engines & transmission by the millions.

All vehicles engines & transmission parts needs to be replace sooner or later. That’s long term business. Now U tell me if this is SMART or not !?

You are spot on. This is why UMW don’t care a damn about the rakyat. Only in 2017, they gave VSC in all their cars. Before that, they were not bothered.

Why? Because all their money was coming from Perodua sales.

So, they had a tidak apa attitude.

This is why, it is very bad for a Government body to own or distribute cars in Malaysia. there is no neutrality. There is no check and balance.

The Government of the day cannot instruct the car company to give better safety spec (like VSC) to and for the rakyat. Why? Because the Government owns the car company

But Proton, they sell to China.

Buy Perodua, a car that even our Government has confidence in.

Lower income car buyers doesn’t really have much choice other than P2. All this sounds familiar because the role of P2 now was played by Proton 20 years ago.

There had been a couple of accidents with bezza and new myvi 3rd gen. Sadly, both resulted in deaths.

Thus, it raises doubt on how safe their cars really are. Compared to older peroduas, yes, but that’s a really low benchmark given how tin milo they were.

Meanwhile, an iriz recently plunged down from elevated highway, rolled 5 times, yet both driver and passenger survived, with some injuries, but alive. Photos clearly indicated HPF helped to protect the cabin section effectively, hence the reason they survived. Bravo Proton.

      Better in terms of what?
The car you listed has each got their pros and cons, none of them are a single perfect car that fits every bill.
Sales volume speaks for itself, buyers know what they want.
In this technological advance age where information are at our fingertips, arguments that buyers dont know what they want or buyers are naive is moot.
Perodua held almost 40% of our total car sales figure for 2016 and 2017.
So who’s the hater here? ;)

  • The new Myvi imho is the best designed car in its class. Everything from front to back just belong together and is easy on the eyes – no visual chinks at all. Axia took the first step towards good-looking small cars (Bezza – not so much). Truly the new Myvi is a master class of how small cars should be designed. It just busted the myth that if it’s small and cheap, it has to look bad in some way. Congrats team Perodua/ Daihatsu.
