Hyundai Sonata N Line planned, to pack over 275 hp?

The new 2020 Hyundai Sonata that was just presented at the New York International Auto Show is currently available with two direct injection petrol engines, but it seems that more are to come. Towards the end of the presentation was confirmation that an N-branded, high-performance Sonata is in the works.

Hyundai America’s director of public relations, Jim Trainor told Autoblog that the Sonata N Line would have “at least 275 horsepower, and probably a lot more.” If so, that makes it significantly more powerful than the existing 2.5 litre naturally-aspirated GDI (191 hp, 245 Nm) and 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol (180 hp, 264 Nm) engines. Both front-drive models get an eight-speed automatic transmission.

It’s unclear which engine the Sonata N Line will get, but it’s safe for us to assume that it would be the same 2.0 litre Theta T-GDI turbocharged petrol engine that’s in the Veloster N. There, it makes exactly 275 hp and 353 Nm, and features a two-stage induction system plus a compression ratio of 9.5:1.

No matter how you spin it, the Sonata N Line looks to be quite a potent executive sedan. Expect the exterior styling and interior trimmings to match its pace as well. The hot sedan is expected to go on sale sometime next year. Other than that, Hyundai also said a hybrid version is in the pipeline, but there’s no details of that as yet. Would you like a high-performance Sonata?
