GIIAS 2019: Suzuki Jimny launched in ID, from RM93k

A year after it stole the show at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), the Suzuki Jimny is back. This time, the fourth-gen small 4×4 is officially launched for the Indonesian market, and it carries price tags that are smaller than the initial projections.

The new Jimny starts from Rp 315.5 juta (RM93,340) for the single-tone MT, with a two million Rupiah (RM591) premium for the two-tone exterior colours. The AT is priced at Rp 328 juta (RM97,017) for the single-tone and Rp 330 juta (RM97,605) for the two-tone. According to local media, the Jimny, which is a CBU import from Japan, was expected to go for Rp 350-400 juta (RM103,521 to RM118,313) in the republic.

The finalised prices are rather eye-popping, given that the high-in-demand model is priced from RM199k in Thailand. Unsurprisingly, the first batch of 50 units have all been accounted for.

The Jimny for overseas markets is by default the “Sierra” version with chunkier bumpers, wide over-fenders and 1.5 litre engine, mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed auto. In Japan, the main seller is the kei car version with a slightly smaller footprint and 660 cc triple.

The engine is a K15B 1.5L naturally-aspirated four-cylinder unit with 102 PS and 130 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro part-time four-wheel drive system features selectable high and low range (2H, 4H, 4L, this ain’t no soft-roader).

The Jimny is famous for its robustness and off-road ability. Built on a ladder frame with additional cross members, it uses a three-link rigid axle with coil springs at the front and rear. A 210 mm ground clearance, 4.9 metre turning radius, 37-degree approach angle, 28-degree ramp breakover and 49-degree departure angle contribute to off-road performance.

The Jimny isn’t as well equipped as mainstream SUVs, but it is after all a basic off-road specialist. One gets auto LED headlamps with washers, leather steering wheel with audio/call buttons, cruise control, auto air con, and an aftermarket JVC 2-DIN touchscreen head unit for the local market.

The front seats are fabric manual chairs and the rear ones split fold 50:50. It rolls on 15-inch rims and skinny 195/80 AT tyres. Safety kit consists of ESP, hill hold control, hill descent control and two airbags.

The new Jimny has proved to be a fantastic canvas for customisation, both by Suzuki and the tuners. Memorable ones include Suzuki’s own Jimny Sierra Pick-up Style that looks like a reborn Toyota BJ40, and the Little G and Little D makeovers by DAMD, as seen at Tokyo Auto Salon. Suzuki Indonesia has a butch Jimny Tough Concept on show at GIIAS, which you can check out below. We’re jealous.

Buy in Indo, sell in Thailand. Untung 2X. Even at RM93k its still too expensive for something so small a SUV and basic interior.

Well, if sold in Thailand it is 90k clean profit. If recond here, have to pay 300% excise duties, profits all goes to tax. Edi Gomen complain rakyat has saved RM4.89B in excise taxes so why make them richer?

    • It’s about capability, character, style and history.
if you think this car is expensive, then you don’t understand the market for this car. And is not made for you.

Also you might forget how expensive and basic LC70 and Defender are.

The price is expensive but this car selling point is not abt its interior. Its a proper off roader.

Off roading is very niche just like the market for this car. Most of the time off roading will cost money so that price tag is considered cheap for off roading fan taking into account its a new car.

To me what ‘expensive’ is when buyer buy an offroad capable vehicle and never used the 4×4 system which is happening in Malaysia. There is a 2WD version but they still go for 4×4 version which is more expensive.

To me, a 4×4 is a workmen workhorse truck so it shouldn’t be unaffordable to us blue collars. Back in the days, a Landie is one such truck where it wasn’t expensive, Cameron farmers could buy them by the dozens. Not this Jimny though, a tad bit more expensive. This is more like a fashion statement not unlike the recently extincted VW Beetle.

I’m Thai and I’m so surprised when I see Suzuki Jimny Indonesia pricing. It’s such a reasonable price. I wish Suzuki will start producing Jimny in Asean soon.
