Acura has teased a Type S Concept that is set to debut at the Monterey Car Week this month. Following a world premiere at a private Acura reception on August 15, the Type S Concept will make its public debut the following day at The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering. It will then be showcased at the historic Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Concept Lawn.

The Acura Type S Concept sets the stage for the return of the brand’s high performance badge. It also sets the design direction for the return of Type S performance variants to the Honda premium brand’s lineup in the years ahead, “delivering a striking expression of Acura performance with a powerful stance and expressive silhouette.”

“The return of Type S is a pivotal moment for Acura, sending a powerful message that we are committed to fulfilling the ‘Precision Crafted Performance’ brand promise across our lineup. Building on the return of NSX, our renewed commitment to Acura Motorsports, the introduction of the third-generation RDX and new Acura design direction, the Type S Concept represents another significant step in creating a new era for the Acura brand,” said Jon Ikeda, VP and Acura brand officer.

From 2001 to 2008, there have been four Acura Type S models in North America – the 2001-2003 3.2CL Type S, 2002-2003 3.2TL Type S, 2002-2006 RSX Type S (Integra DC5) and the 2007-2008 TL Type S (think CL7 Accord Euro R). Typically, Type S variants offered sportier styling, higher output engines and suspension tuning/brakes to match.

Two years ago, Acura brought back the A-Spec trim level on the TLX sedan, but this is a more serious step in the sporty direction.
