Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept breaks Nurburgring four-door and front-wheel-drive records with 7:20.143 lap

Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept breaks Nurburgring four-door and front-wheel-drive records with 7:20.143 lap

Here’s a brand you don’t normally associate with the Nurburgring Nordschleife, but here it is breaking records at the famous circuit. Cyan Racing, formerly named Polestar, has broken two Nurburgring lap records during development of the Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept.

That makes the sedan from the Geely-owned brand the fastest four-door car and the fastest front-wheel driven car around the 21 km track nicknamed Green Hell. It also marks the first time that a Chinese manufacturer has claimed a record on the circuit with a mass production-based car.

The Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept did 7 minutes and 20.143 seconds, averaging 170.4 km/h, with Thed Björk, the 2017 world champion of touring car racing, behind the wheel. That’s three seconds faster than the record for four-door cars, formerly held by Jaguar, and 25 seconds faster than the front-wheel-drive record held by Renault.

“We continued our development of the car in torrential rain and scorching sunshine on the most fearsome circuit in the world. The car is rewarding to drive no matter the conditions, be it the Nurburgring or the autobahn. The record that we achieved here is something I rank on the same level as my racing titles and a highlight in my part of transitioning development from race to road cars,” the Lynk & Co Cyan Racing driver said.

The race engineers and drivers of Cyan Racing, the official motorsport partner to Geely Group Motorsport, have developed the 03 Cyan Concept as a road-going version of the race car run by Cyan in the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR). The people behind it is largely the same team that developed previous concept cars such as the Volvo C30 Concept and S60 Concept.

“We continue to push past the boundaries and goals that we have set for the 03 Cyan Concept, a car that acts as a development platform for future Lynk & Co performance cars and parts. While our main purpose is development, the records that we broke are a true testament to the potential and capabilities of the Lynk & Co platform, as well as our engineering philosophy from more than two decades of motorsport and road car performance,” said Henrik Fries, head of automotive R&D at Cyan Racing.

Sounds impressive, but you can’t buy one, for now. Development of the 03 Cyan Concept will continue throughout the 2019, with the team turning attention to winter testing in the north of Sweden as part of creating a performance car for all roads, all seasons and all conditions.

The 7:20.143 lap record was set using the full 20.832 km circuit layout as per the official Nurburgring standard, and not the shorter 20.6 km version used by some manufacturers, the company says. For the shorter version of the circuit, the car did 7:15.123.

Cyan Racing also holds the lap record for the fastest ever front-wheel drive race car with the 2017 title-winning Volvo S60 Cyan TC1 (Nordschleife + GP circuit in 8:34.813) as well as the previous lap record for four-door road cars with the Volvo S60 Concept in 2016 (7:51.110 on the 20,832 km circuit).

more embarassing when turd design breaks record set by a car that is “designed” to be aerodynamic, to a point altering its design 360 degrees, in the name to be “fast”. Crabby Civic will always be crappy.

The time set by fk8 was broken by the time set by megane trophy r, and that time was shattered by cyan

Malaysia’s 3rd National Car manufacturer should aim for a six-door mid wheel drive record to gain some international exposure.

This resembles a WTCR car more than production car. Just listen to the sequential gearbox whine. No much use to compare it to the mass market production Civic R and Megane trophy R.

How silly to compare this car to production cars. Just listen to the video clips, that is obviously a race car with straight-cut dogbox
