Tesla batteries lose 12% of capacity after 320,000 km

Tesla has released information on battery degradation in its vehicles, according to Electrek, and the American EV maker claims that its driver batteries will lose just 12% of its capacity after 200,000 miles (320,000 km) of use.

Released as part of its 2022 Impact Report, the information on battery degradation was released by Tesla as part of its calculation of environmental impact from its electric vehicles. The website notes that the findings from Tesla refer only to battery degradation from the Model S and the Model X, which is likely due to the carmaker having more long-term data on these models.

The American EV maker also said it will begin disclosing datasets for capacities of batteries using new chemistry, which are used in the firm’s more recent vehicles, according to the report.

Tesla batteries lose 12% of capacity after 320,000 km

The recent findings of battery degradation of up to 12% revealed almost similar, if slightly worse results compared to those from Tesla’s previous Impact Report for 2021, which found that its battery packs lost 10% of capacity after the same distance of 200,000 miles or 320,000 km.

Vehicle mileage is just one factor in a battery’s retention of capacity, reported Electrek, as battery age is also a major factor. The capacity retention figures at lower mileages are likely reflective of age, while the capacity retention figures of vehicles with higher mileage values likely reflect less influence from battery age, according to the website.

The website also cites early data from newer Tesla models such as the Model 3 and Model Y, and these have also shown high retention of battery capacity, namely with degradation of less than 10% after 100,000 miles (160,000 km) and less than 15% after 200,000 miles (320,000 km), however not many examples of those models have reached such mileages yet, it said.

Truly hard to believe lets say RM320k / 20k a year = 16 years? Come on Li-Ion battery biggest enemy is heat and fast charging and driving under Malaysian weather is definitely gonna kill the battery faster as learnt from your mobile phone.

Similarly, I can charged my phone to 100% after 2-years
But standby/operating time has dropped significantly

    • I’m sure tesla didn’t test it in Malaysia nor they claim it was done in Malaysia. They only give numbers as a benchmark.

Long term Tesla customer statements have proven otherwise.

With the heat factored in, maybe losing 30%?
All things considered, is still a very good number. and I never owned a car with 300k mileage before.
ICE car with 300k mileage, engine need overhaul…

You are wrong. EV car is suitable to drive in tropical zone compare to 4 seasons area. It is because battery need certain heat to work well and also heating system is consumed much more energy compare to cooling system. That’s why full charge in summer can run 400km but in winter it is at best 300km or lower. The late introduction of EV in SEA is because of EV infra and also fuel price isn’t as expensive as Europe or America.

You cannot compare EV battery with mobile battery. You won’t need to charge the EV car daily unlike mobile phone everyday must charge at least once or more.

Tesla is start hiring in Malaysia now. Expect to start selling by end of the year probably. I guess they will launch Model 3 and Y first and strategy will be like what they did in Thailand.

that is very good. still far better than my laptop and iphone battery degradation rates.

    Whichever comes first.

I’m surprised the rest of the car hasn’t fallen apart by then, considering Tesla’s reputation for shambolic build quality.

    • You can’t say that here. people puts tesla on a pedestal because it’s tesla. quality was never a consideration. It’s a tesla.

lets not forget that EV batteries are getting cheaper by the day. in 5 years time, or 10 years, replacing an EV battery may be as simple as changing sparkplugs.

because sparkplugs are old dying tech.
in far future, it will be recorded in history books when children learn that long ago, people used to burn fossil fuel to move a metal block, that then turns a rod, and turns many other parts to finally just to move a tyre.

Can trust aa. More interested on the age VS capacity. And field data especially from hot countries.

Battery scare cold than hot. Just go google and you can see battery in winter perform much worse compare to summer time.

And also EV is not afraid of bad traffic jam coz consume less energy compare to ICE car during traffic jam. But EV car travel less KM in highway drive compare to ICE who is save more fuel for long distance drive.
