    2025 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport in Malaysia – 3.0T mild-hybrid, from RM470k; RM25k cheaper than PHEV

BMW Malaysia has launched the facelifted fourth-generation (G05) BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport mild-hybrid, and this joins the X5 xDrive50e M Sport plug-in hybrid that was first shown for the Malaysian market in January 2024.

Locally assembled (CKD) at the Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah, the BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport is priced from RM469,800 on-the-road without insurance, or RM508,200 with the extended warranty and service package. The plug-in hybrid xDrive50e M Sport continues to be sold alongside, at RM25,000 more, and the PHEV is priced at RM494,800 base, up to RM533,200 with the extended warranty and service package.

This marks the return of the non-plug-in hybrid X5 as a mainstream model in Malaysia since the F15-generation 35i model way back in 2014, apart from the short-lived and CBU-only G05 40i in 2019. In recent history, sales of the X5 in Malaysia has largely come from PHEV variants thanks to its tax benefits, starting with the F15 40e in 2016, followed by the G05 45e in 2020 and the current 50e LCI in 2024.

Kitted in the M Sport trim specification, the xDrive40i M Sport is outwardly similar to the PHEV variant. Under the skin, the xDrive40i is powered by a 3.0 litre turbocharged inline-six cylinder petrol engine with mild-hybrid electrification.

This brings combined outputs of 381 PS and 540 Nm driving all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Thus equipped, the X5 xDrive40i does the 0-100 km/h acceleration benchmark in 5.4 seconds, onwards to a top speed of 250 km/h.

Chassis equipment is comprised of air suspension which can be raised by 40 mm, and conversely, be lowered by 20 mm in Sport mode, or by up to 40 mm for easier loading of luggage. Suspension configuration is double wishbones in front and a five-link layout at the rear. Rolling stock is a set of 21-inch Style 915 M bicolour alloys, shod in Contiental ContiPremiumContact 6 SSR run-flat tyres, 275/40R21 in front and 315/35 R21 at the rear.

Driving assistance systems in the X5 xDrive40i M Sport includes the Driving Assistant Professional package that brings Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Emergency Stop Assistant, Automatic Speed Limit Assist, Lane Change Assistant, Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision protection, Crossing-Traffic Warning in front, Evasion Assistant, Intersection Warning with city braking function, and a wrong-way warning function.

Also on is the Parking Assistant Professional package, comprised of Active Park Distance Control, lateral parking aid, and a Surround View System with Remote 3D View. Automatic parking supports parallel and perpendicular parking manoeuvres, and the Manoeuvring Assistant enables up to 10 preset parking paths to be saved.

Infotainment in the X5 xDrive40i M Sport is the Live Cockpit Professional setup comprised of a 12.3-inch driver instrumentation display and a 14.9-inch central display, powered by BMW Operating System 8.5. The centre console is like that of the PHEV, using a toggle style transmission selector – as in common on current BMW models – and touch-surface controls.

Smartphone integration in the X5 xDrive40i M Sport includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system. Interior upholstery is now of the Sensafin synthetic material in a sole colour choice of black, now also on the xDrive50e, rather than the Merino leather that was specified at the PHEV’s launch last year (the PHEV itself switched to Sensafin trim in mid-2024).

Also included in the xDrive40i M Sport are the luggage compartment package, roller sunblinds for the rear side windows, and a wireless device charging tray. All in, the specifications of the mild-hybrid xDrive40i M Sport here are matched by the PHEV xDrive50e, with the powertrain being the key difference. Kerb weights also differ, at 2.2 tonnes for the mild-hybrid xDrive40i, against 2.5 tonnes for the PHEV xDrive50e.

For exterior colours, the selection offered is comprised of Mineral White, Black Sapphire, Brooklyn Grey and Skyscraper Grey. The 2025 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport now arrives in Malaysia priced from RM469,800 on-the-road without insurance, or RM508,200 with the extended warranty and service package.

    2024 G05 BMW X5 xDrive50e M Sport in Malaysia – 489 PS, 110 km EV range, RM528k OTR without insurance

BMW Malaysia has now announced the official pricing for the 2024 G05-generation BMW X5 xDrive50e M Sport facelift in Malaysia, and the plug-in hybrid SUV is priced at RM486,800 as a base, with the BMW Service & Repair Inclusive including the five-year extended warranty and service package at an additional RM41,300 for a total of RM528,100 on-the-road excluding insurance.

For comparison, the outgoing X5 xDrive45e M Sport has been priced from RM456,620 (RM497,920 with the extended warranty and service package) as of January 2024, representing a hike of RM30,180 over the outgoing model. Previewed for the Malaysian market earlier this month, the G05 X5 facelift comes to market in this xDrive50e M Sport as the sole variant, which gains an updated petrol-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain.

This is comprised of the carmaker’s 3.0 litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine that has been uprated to produce 313 PS and 450 Nm of torque, which gets an improved electric motor – now producing 197 PS and 280 Nm – located between the engine and the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

Combined output is now 489 PS and 700 Nm, or 95 PS and 100 Nm more than the X5 xDrive45e it replaces. Fully deployed, the powertrain propels the X5 xDrive50e M Sport from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, to a top speed of 250 km/h.

Alongside the uprated powertrain also comes improved electric-only range, as the G05 facelift xDrive50e M Sport is rated to achieve up to 110 km of EV range on the WLTP testing standard, from its 29.5 kWh (25.7 kWh nett) lithium-ion battery; this improves upon the 77 km range achieved by the previous X5 xDrive45e.

Replenishing the battery, similarly gets uprated with an onboard AC charger that now takes charging of up to 7.4 kW (up from 3.7 kW), enabling a full charge in 4.5 hours, which is quicker than that achieved by the previous model.

Visual cues which mark this out as the facelift include a restyled fascia, featuring headlamps which are now 35 mm narrower, containing a new DRL signature that is comprised of outward-pointing arrows rather than the half-hexagon shape used for the previous design.

Its front grille gets cascade lighting with the Iconic Glow package, while the air breathers on the front fenders get a new design on their trailing edges. These are complemented by an ‘X motif’ formed by the redesigned tail lamps, which have a double-L signature. Here, the M Sport trim specification means a sportier set of bumpers, front and rear. Meanwhile, rolling stock is a set of 21-inch Style 915M bi-colour light-alloy wheels.

The interior of the facelifted G05 X5 xDrive50e M Sport adopts the brand’s current standard of BMW Curved Display, which is comprised of a 12.3-inch instrumentation display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen, with infotainment handled by BMW Operating System 8.5.

Comfort and convenience features include the BMW Light Bar, a Harman Kardon Surround sound system, Comfort Access, Driving Assistant Professional, Parking Assistant Professional and Merino leather upholstery; the latter available in black or Tartufo.

For exterior colours, the 2024 G05 BMW X5 xDrive50e M Sport in Malaysia can be specified in Black Sapphire, Manhattan, Mineral White and Skyscraper Grey.

To recap, the 2024 G05 BMW X5 xDrive50e M Sport is on sale in Malaysia at RM528,100 on-the-road excluding insurance, from a base price of RM486,800 with the addition of BMW Service & Repair Inclusive including the five-year extended warranty and service package at an additional RM41,300.

2024 BMW X5 facelift previewed in Malaysia – CKD; xDrive50e M Sport; up to 110 km EV range; RM530k est

BMW Group Malaysia today previewed the new fourth-generation (G05) BMW X5 facelift, which was first revealed globally last February and will be offered here in a sole xDrive50e M Sport variant. Like the pre-facelift G05, the updated version will be launched as a locally-assembled (CKD) model.

Given this is merely a preview, no official pricing is being provided at the moment but we do get an estimate: RM530,000 (OTR without insurance) inclusive of a five-year extended warranty and service package. For reference, the outgoing X5 that is available in xDrive45e M Sport guise retails for RM456,620 with a standard two-year warranty, or RM497,920 with the five-year extended warranty and service package.

One of the most significant changes made to the X5 is its plug-in hybrid powertrain. The 3.0 litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine gets a power bump to now produce 313 PS (308 hp or 230 kW) and 450 Nm of torque.

Also improved is the electric motor sandwiched between the engine and eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, which is now rated at 197 PS (194 hp or 145 kW) and 280 Nm. Together, the total system output is 489 PS (483 hp or 360 kW) and 700 Nm, which is an increase of 95 PS (94 hp or 70 kW) and 100 Nm compared to the previous X5 xDrive45e.

With a standard xDrive all-wheel drive system, the new X5 xDrive50e will get from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 250 km/h. Should you plan to rely more on the electric motor, the lithium-ion battery with a net energy capacity of 25.7 kWh (29.5 kWh gross) provides up to 110 km of electric-only range following the WLTP standard – this was 77 km for the pre-facelift X5 xDrive45e.

Charging also gets a spec bump, with the onboard AC charger now capable of supporting double the charging capacity at 7.4 kW. A full charge takes 4.5 hours, which is faster than the previous model that can only handle up to 3.7 kW.

In terms of visual changes, the facelifted X5 sports reprofiled headlamps that are 35 mm narrower than before, along with a new LED daytime running light signature featuring outward-pointing arrows instead of the previous half hexagons.

Elsewhere, the kidney grille can be illuminated via cascade lighting when specified with the Iconic Glow package, which is exactly what we’re getting. Other changes include revised air breathers on the front fenders that now have a new design with three horizontal blades at their trailing edge.

More notable are the taillights which now form an “unmistakable X motif” with their new double L-shaped signature. As before, the new X5 will come as standard with the M Sport package, which adds sportier bumpers front and rear.

Moving inside, the X5 follows in the footsteps of recent BMW models by adopting the BMW Curved Display. This sits prominently on an overhauled dashboard and the high-end Live Cockpit Professional version made up of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch touchscreen – BMW Operating System 8.5 drives the car’s infotainment system.

With the big central display, the physical climate controls and programmable favourites row have been omitted, so most of the vehicle functions are only accessible via the touchscreen. Keeping with this theme, the centre console also gets a revamp that sees a toggle-like switch replacing the traditional gear lever, surrounded by touch-sensitive buttons.

Features of the local-spec X5 include 21-inch M V-spoke style 915M bi-colour light-alloy wheels, BMW Light Bar, a Harman Kardon Surround sound system, Comfort Access, Driving Assistant Professional, Parking Assistant Professional and Merino leather upholstery, the last of which comes in either Black or Tartufo. On the mention of colours, the exterior can had with Black Sapphire, Manhattan, Mineral White and Skyscraper Grey.

  • 2023 BMW X5 facelift – G05 LCI gets refined styling, Curved Display, more powerful PHEV, 48-volt tech

2023 BMW X5 facelift – G05 LCI gets refined styling, Curved Display, more powerful PHEV, 48-volt tech

BMW has unveiled the newly facelifted X5, which competes against the Mercedes-Benz GLE that also got a facelift several days ago. The G05 LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) follows in the footsteps of the latest 3 Series, receiving a more refined design and a few technical updates to keep the mid-size SUV competitive.

Styling changes that are immediately noticeable include the reprofiled headlamps, which BMW says are 35 mm narrower than before. The LED daytime running light signature is also new here, dropping the half-hexagon look in favour of outward-pointing arrows.

Meanwhile, the kidney grille hasn’t grown any larger but it is illuminated via cascade lighting when specified with the Iconic Glow package on specific variants. Said grille is accompanied by a surround and redesigned slats in Pearl-effect Chrome, while in the lower apron, the air curtains are now on their own and aligned vertically against the bumper.

Said bumper also gets some tweaks, with prominent creases pointing towards the rectangular lower intake that is highlighted by black and chrome trim. Progressing down the sides, the air breathers on the front fenders now have a new design with three horizontal blades at their trailing edge.

Roof rails are now standard, while the rear underguard is now finished in Glacier Silver to match the revised bumper. Still on the rear of the SUV, the taillights gain a new lighting signature with double L shapes (one being inverted) to form what BMW calls an “unmistakable X motif.”

The X5 can also be ordered with the M Sport package with more aggressive bumpers, with a further Pro version adding plenty of black accents for a more intimidating look. The latter option also adds an M Sport braking system with red calipers, an M Sport exhaust system and M seat belts.

On that mention, the interior of the new X5 adopts the BMW Curved Display (includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster) with iDrive 8 that is powered by BMW Operating System 8. Just like in the 3 Series LCI, most of the vehicle controls are integrated into the 14.9-inch touchscreen, so the physical climate controls and programmable favourites row have been omitted.

The new infotainment system includes a digital voice assistant to control various functions if you prefer not tapping on a screen, and there are various ambiance modes available in addition to the numerous connectivity features like 5G, the My BMW App, smartphone integration, Digital Key Plus, BMW Maps navigation with Augmented View.

BMW is also keen to highlight its leather-like Sensafin dashboard and seat upholstery, which is now standard on the X5, as well as an ambient light bar with a crystalline surface structure and LED backlighting – the latter also serves to illuminate the model lettering.

Another change that is familiar is seen on the centre console that still houses the iDrive controller, but omits the traditional gear lever in favour of a toggle switch. This area can be dressed up further with the Crafted Clarity option, which brings glass applications to the start/stop button and controller dial.

BMW has also revised its trim structure, with the xLine now coming standard with electrical steering adjustment, a 2.5-zone climate control system, electrically folding side mirrors, a Hi-Fi speaker system and DAB digital radio tuner.

No shortage of options too, including the Comfort Package (heating functions), a panoramic glass sunroof or Sky Lounge system as well as a Harman Kardon surround sound system (16 speakers, 415 watts of amplification) or a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system (20 speakers, 1,500 watts of amplifaction).

In terms of driver assistance, BMW offers front-collision warning, Evasion Assistant and Crossroads Warning as standard, with the optional Driving Assistant throwing in Lane Departure Warning and Lane Change Warning as well. With the Driving Assistant Professional package specified, further features like Active Cruise Control with stop and go function, Steering and Lane Control Assistant, automatic Speed Limit Assist and Active Navigation are added.

The German carmaker also offers Parking Assistant Professional that can help drivers park in parallel or perpendicular spaces, with the added ability to also record steering movements up to 200 metres via the Reversing Assistant. If that isn’t enough, owners can also use their smartphone to control their vehicle remotely when dealing with tight parking spaces. Meanwhile, Manoeuvre Assistant stores far more complex manoeuvres using GPS data and the trajectory data from steering movements.

Lastly, let’s talk powertrains. The range includes the X5 xDrive50e, which is a plug-in hybrid that features a 3.0 litre turbocharged inline-six that makes 313 PS (308 hp or 230 kW) from 5,000 to 6,000 rpm and 450 Nm of torque from 1,750 to 4,700 rpm.

2023 BMW X5 facelift – G05 LCI gets refined styling, Curved Display, more powerful PHEV, 48-volt tech

The setup also includes an underfloor-mounted lithium-ion battery with a net energy capacity of 25.7 kWh (29.5 kWh gross), and this powers an electric motor rated at 197 PS (194 hp or 145 kW) and 280 Nm.

The more powerful combustion engine and electric motor contribute to a total system output is 489 PS (483 hp or 360 kW) and 700 Nm, which is an increase of 96 PS (94 hp or 70 kW) and 100 Nm compared to the previous X5 xDrive45e. Electric-only range is also up from the around 77 km to between 94 and 110 km.

Next up, there’s the X5 xDrive40i that also comes with a 3.0 litre turbo straight-six, but with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. This sees an electric motor rated at 12 PS (12 hp or 9 kW) and 200 Nm being integrated into the transmission, enabling low-speed electric-only propulsion and smoother operation of the start/stop function. The e-motor draws power from a 48-volt battery located in the engine compartment that is charged via regenerative braking. The mild hybrid petrol engine serves up 380 PS (375 hp or 280 kW) and 520 Nm, which is 47 PS (47 hp or 35 kW) and 70 Nm more than before.

The last of the petrol options is the performance-minded X5 M60i xDrive that replaces the previous X5 M50i xDrive. Featuring a 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 that makes 530 PS (523 hp or 390 kW) and 750 Nm, the new variant also gains a 48-volt system for better response and power delivery under acceleration.

On the diesel side of things, the sole option mentioned is the X5 xDrive30d with a mild hybrid 3.0 litre turbodiesel inline-six making 286 PS (282 hp or 210 kW) and 650 Nm. All engines come with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive system.

Other driving-related features that can be fitted to the X5 include adaptive suspension, which can also be had with two-axle air suspension, Integral Active Steering (rear-wheel steering), adaptive M suspension Professional with active roll stabilisation and an integrated braking system. BMW also offers new wheel designs with sizes ranging from 19 to 22 inches.

Performance figures for the new X5 are as follows:

    • X5 xDrive50e – 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds; 250 km/h top speed; 140 km/h top speed (electric only)
    • X5 xDrive40i – 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds; 250 km/h top speed
    • X5 M60i xDrive – 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds; 250 km/h top speed
    • X5 xDrive30d – 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds; 233 km/h top speed
