Volvo EX60 EV confirmed for debut in early 2026

The Volvo EX60 will debut early next year, the Swedish carmaker has confirmed in a Facebook post. This follows the upcoming model’s teaser in March this year ahead of the ES90 unveiling, and carmaker has previously revealed that the EX60 – the EV sibling to the XC60 – will be built on the third-generation Scalable Product Architecture (SPA3).

Its use of the SPA3 platform is claimed to offer not just greater core computing power thanks to the Volvo Cars Superset, but also greater scalability and lower investment costs. The SPA3 platform is “100% electric and 100% Volvo Cars,” the carmaker’s chief engineering and technology officer told Autocar, rather than a shared Geely group platform as with the SEA platform of the EX30.

“Because it’s 100% electric, we’ve been able to remove all the old constraints of the combustion engine. We very much took a first-principles approach to it. You will see the highest level of supremely well-integrated technology coming together in these products,” Bell said.

The Volvo EX60 is expected to be similar in size to the 2025 Volvo XC60

The EX60 has also been revealed to enter production next year, and the battery-electric model will complement the XC60 in the brand’s line-up as the latter received a significant update for the 2026 model year. Given its positioning, the EX60 is expected to be similar in size to the XC60, and draw styling elements from its battery-electric stablemates the EX90 and EX30.

There has yet to be any further new details on the EX60, though the upcoming BEV can be expected to have some features trickled down from the ES90 including an 800-volt electrical architecture, which enables DC charging at over 300 kW for the crossover sedan.

Volvo EX60 – EV SUV to debut with new multi-adaptive seatbelt system; adaptable to different body types

After teasing the Volvo EX60 a few months ago, the Swedish automaker has now provided additional details of its upcoming, SPA3-based electric vehicle (EV) that will make its debut in 2026.

Focusing on safety, the electric SUV will feature a new multi-adaptive seatbelt that Volvo claims can better protect passengers by adapting to traffic variations and the person wearing it. The safety system uses data input from the car’s interior and exterior sensors to customise protection in the event of an accident.

In addition to sensors like the accelerometer, the system also takes into consideration an individual’s profiles such as height, weight, body shape and seating position. It will then adjust the seatbelt to pretension itself to an optimum amount the minimises the risk of injury.

For example, a larger occupant in a serious crash will receive a higher belt load setting to help reduce the risk of head injury. Meanwhile, a smaller occupant in a milder crash will receive a lower belt load setting to reduce the risk of rib fractures.

“The world first multi-adaptive safety belt is another milestone for automotive safety and a great example of how we leverage real-time data with the ambition to help save millions of more lives,” says. This marks a major upgrade to the modern three-point safety belt, a Volvo invention introduced in 1959, estimated to have saved over a million lives,” said Asa Haglund, head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre.

Volvo adds that the load-limiting profile variations, which manage the force applied to the occupants in the event of an accident, can be further improved through over-the-air (OTA) software updates, saying “it gets better over time.”

2026 Volvo EX60 teased in ES90 reveal video – EV SUV based on SPA3; Mercedes GLC EV, BMW iX3 rival

Volvo’s newest car, the ES90, is a big deal for the company, returning to its roots as a maker of safe, roomy and dependable sedans. This time, it’s a handsome (for the most part) but mildly uneasy mash-up of a sedan and a crossover, with a relatively high ground clearance, five doors and electric power.

But the ES90’s time in the sun was rather overshadowed by a slightly bizarre moment that came just before the 25-minute mark of the reveal livestream. In it, Volvo’s Shanghai design studio boss Sophie Jingyao Li, while talking about the car’s design heritage, “accidentally” walks into a studio where a tarp covering a clay model was hitched up to reveal a new SUV, before another employee hastily pulls it back down again.

As the model plate reveals, this is the EX60, the electric (that’s the “E” prefix) equivalent to the XC60, slotting in between the EX40 (née XC40 Recharge) and EX90. That means it’s a compact executive SUV that will compete with the next Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology (try saying that ten times fast) and the next-generation BMW iX3, the latter being part of Munich’s Neue Klasse family.

The EX60 would be an electric counterpart of the XC60, recently given a second facelift

Not much is revealed about the styling, but we can see that the car carries a similar design language to the EX90, with clean surfacing, sharp lines and the rear number plate recess positioned low down in the bumper. One difference is the taillights – they are no longer C-shaped but vertical, with the upper and lower sections joined together following the contour of the shoulders, just like the XC60.

We still don’t know much about the EX60, but Volvo has previously confirmed it will enter production in 2026, using the third-generation Scalable Product Architecture (SPA3). This platform is touted to not only feature greater core computing power thanks to the Volvo Cars Superset, but also offer enhanced scalability and lower investment costs. The car should also get some of the ES90’s headlining features, including an 800-volt architecture that enables DC fast charging in excess of 300 kW.

The EX60 will complement the existing second-gen XC60, which was recently given a significant second facelift after eight years on the market, helping it soldier on for several more years. That’s a similar relationship between the new-ish EX90 and the also-updated XC90.

Volvo EX60 EV built on SPA3 platform confirmed

At Volvo’s recent 90/90 event, the company confirmed that its upcoming all-electric sedan – the ES90 – will make its debut in March next year. What comes next will be the EX60, which is set to be an important model for the Swedish brand, as it is the smaller sibling to the larger EX90.

As you can tell by the name, the EX60 will be in the same class as the highly popular XC60, which was and still is Volvo’s best-selling model. Unlike the EX90 that is build on the second-generation Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), the EX60 will be the first to use the third-generation version of the platform known as SPA3.

This will be underpinned by what the company calls the ‘Volvo Cars Superset’ technology stack and improves upon the SPA2 by having enhanced core computing capability. However, the company says the most significant change is improved scalability so it can continuously develop and build cars of all sizes, be it larger than the EX90 or smaller than the EX30 or anything in between.

These benefits also allow for lower investment costs and stronger future cash flow. “By having a scalable SPA3 architecture, we create increased synergies and improve technology efficiency when it comes to core computing, batteries, e-motors, megacasting and modular manufacturing – all factors that contribute to significantly driving down the costs of producing cars,” the company said in its release.

“Our Torslanda plant and its preparation for production of SPA3 cars showcase our approach to future manufacturing, with all capabilities needed to produce a car located in the same area. This approach becomes especially powerful when we’re able to use the same key components across all cars built on SPA3, meaning that complexity goes down and flexibility goes up,” it added.
