After teasing the Volvo EX60 a few months ago, the Swedish automaker has now provided additional details of its upcoming, SPA3-based electric vehicle (EV) that will make its debut in 2026.
Focusing on safety, the electric SUV will feature a new multi-adaptive seatbelt that Volvo claims can better protect passengers by adapting to traffic variations and the person wearing it. The safety system uses data input from the car’s interior and exterior sensors to customise protection in the event of an accident.
In addition to sensors like the accelerometer, the system also takes into consideration an individual’s profiles such as height, weight, body shape and seating position. It will then adjust the seatbelt to pretension itself to an optimum amount the minimises the risk of injury.
For example, a larger occupant in a serious crash will receive a higher belt load setting to help reduce the risk of head injury. Meanwhile, a smaller occupant in a milder crash will receive a lower belt load setting to reduce the risk of rib fractures.
“The world first multi-adaptive safety belt is another milestone for automotive safety and a great example of how we leverage real-time data with the ambition to help save millions of more lives,” says. This marks a major upgrade to the modern three-point safety belt, a Volvo invention introduced in 1959, estimated to have saved over a million lives,” said Asa Haglund, head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre.
Volvo adds that the load-limiting profile variations, which manage the force applied to the occupants in the event of an accident, can be further improved through over-the-air (OTA) software updates, saying “it gets better over time.”
