Daihatsu D-01 Concept – China’s Avanza

The Toyota-Daihatsu siblings take economies of scale to a whole new level unheard of with the introduction of the Daihatsu D-01 Concept recently at the Auto China 2006 motor show. While Toyota calls it a “concept” for China, it’s actually pretty much the same ASEAN market Toyota Avanza/Daihatsu Xenia that’s been available for ages already, with a slightly different bodykit. The production version of the Daihatsu D-01 Concept will be introduced into the Chinese market in mid-2007.

Apart from the ugly taillights, this is one good looking Avanza thanks to its crossover-like bodykit! Bring it to M'sia and it will surely sell!

i would go so far as to say "sorry state of customer in M’sia autimotive industry."

i just think malaysians have a love for a bargain. the Avanza, and its larger sibling the unser, represents more metal for your buck. You can see a similar phenomenon with the Naza aka Kia Carnival. Relatively affordable price, but you get a very large car. looks is secondary.

plastic wheel arches resist damage better when in the urban jungle as well as off road. Plus, its easily replaceable and does not need to be resprayed.

This would be useful if and only if it is actually equipped with a 4WD system. I can never understand why they choose to use those tacky "chrome-effect" tail lights. They look daft. Silly. Stodgy. Fugly. Whatever. Just remove every single piece of chrome trimmings from the damn car. And yeah, at least a medieval 4WD system should be on the list. Otherwise the SUV pretensions would simply be pointless. Remember the Unser with bolt-on bodykits? Yuck.

Plastics covers look more like the Renault Scenic 4×4. But better ground clearance. The Avanza 1.5 with the body kit still look better. Maybe the body colours need more striking and bright colours. What's the price going to be like….sure lower than Bolehland ?

True its not very attractive but peeps here being a true brand loyalist will cough out much earned money and willing to be in deeper credit to own a Toyota no matter what people think of its look.

The death of the Celica has definitely shown a dirth in creativeness at the earth's most profitable company. But the death of TVR has shown that the world does not care about beauty.

'tis my first comment. Avanza has just been introduced in Manila. It is a product of the IMV project which didnt include the Philippines because the model is expected to sell to former Tyta FX or Z'ace or Qualis owners who made them into multi passenger taxis and quickly won fame. However, due to the overuse of the FX, loading with 10 pax instead of max 5pax, all FX taxis are now totally dilapidated. Building cars is all about consumption.

I wonder if you can fit a bigger engine in that bonnet. I'm thinking of something like the RAV4's 2.2 D-4D unit. Then again that would be somewhat degrading to the RAV4…hehehe…
