VIDEO: Inside a combustion chamber

Combustion ChamberIn the previous post we saw ad agency Idea City’s TV spot for BMW showing us the insides of the V8 engine from the new BMW M3. It looked great but it wasn’t really real combustion cycle as there was no piston.

After the jump you will find a video recording of what happens inside a combustion chamber for real! You can actually see the intake valve opening, the combustion process and then the exhaust valve opening, all in slow motion!

The legendary vehicle “heart” camera. I think this is a must for the future tuners and car “surgeons”.

    Can anyone explain this..??
    I know nothing about engines..
    Very curious though…

this is the best clips i’ve ever seen! it’s like being able to scope those impossible places – i wonder if in the future we will be able to see how hell looks like? LOL.

Seen lots of diagrams on books, but first time seeing it real, cool!

hmmm.. this links might give u an idea what this all about..

btw, really kewl… never seen anything as good as this clip before.. the most i’ve seen was a cut-out engine block with moving pistons & valves with out the combustion itself..

omigosh… i nvr thought they could actually film this… but wouldn’t the camera rosak with such heat?

    coolness nevertheless :D

This would be an awesome educational video for Form 3 Kemahiran Hidup classes! It was pretty difficult for some to actually picture the timing and system of a engine, this would help. But I would really like to see a rotary engine in action, now that….would be insanely awesome!

too bad they didnt film the whole process…including the overlapping…when exhaust vavle about to close,n intake valve open, so to make it as continuous action

seem like very huge turbo in work…
the air is rushing in from the intake volve…with the fuel mixture.

the clip stop at 50 seconds.. try refresh. still the same. cant watch it complete :(

its a pin hole camera. :P

i’ve seen that last year. Anyway, good thing to share to those havent seen it before.

That pinhole cam should be moving at about 1000 frames per second(fps) to capture high speed events like that. Some more in super hot environment. Normal movie cam captures 30fps for good quality picture. Try shooting an apple with a gun at 1000fps and play it back at 30fps. nice.. I guess automotive engineering students will proudly play this video in combustion systems class tomorrow for show and tell. Grade A for you! Yamseng!

the video a bit jumping as the exhaust valve closure is so instantanious,
or it was just a repetation from an incomplete cycle.

not as expert for engine, but the movie clip show a common combustion cycle normally for petrol engine.. no need to say: wah!!! Cool!!!

The combustion chamber looks really clean huh? Even the wall was shiny! Haha.

PS: How did they even get the combustion chamber lit up so well??? At 4.5k fps! gilerrrr

it is fake, there is no way the valve can turn during combustion as the explosion pressure would press fit the valves nor would there be any leakage during combustion like what you see the fire coming in the combustion chamber instead of going out. With the kind of power an engine makes or with that amount of fuel and air going into the engine, I am very sure we won’t be able to see anything during combustion but fire and exhaust.

I notice what is even funnier, please correct me if I am wrong, that theperson who made this video seem to have the exhaust valve acting as intake because it looks bigger than the other valve.

It still looks cool but it is not real.

ops! I made a mistake, sorry. The exhaust valve acting as intake because it looks SMALLER than the other valve.
