China pushes for greener vehicles through subsidies

vtg_1.jpgAuto components supplier Honeywell (famous for Garrett turbos) have signed an MoU with ChangAn Automotive for the two companies to jointly develop micro-turbochargers. Honeywell’s definition of micro-turbochargers are small turbochargers designed for use with two-cylinder or three-cylinder engines, especially diesel engines, designed to make those engines more driveable when installed in low cost and fuel efficient compact cars.

The Chinese government have called for car manufacturers to produce more energy-efficent vehicles and equipping cars with downsized force inducted engines are one way to increase a car’s efficiency. China has recently announced a government subsidy scheme where the government will subsidise up to 50,000 yuan (RM25.8k) for hybrid cars and up to 60,000 yuan (RM31k) for electric cars.

There are currently only 5 vehicles on this list with more being evaluated and added soon – the IVECO electric service vehicle, JAC’s electricity engineering electric vehicle for city electricity system maintenance and repairing, Zotye’s electric light bus, BYD’s F3DM hybrid car and JMC Transit’s electric service vehicle. 4 out of 5 are commercial vehicles, and with the huge manufacturing/industrial sectors in China perhaps its for the best that these vehicles get plenty of attention.

BYD F3DM

BYD is really quite happy about this as they’re the only consumer passenger sedan that qualifies for the subsidy so far. BYD confirms that their F3DM qualifies for the full 50,000 yuan subsidy, and the car will officially go on sale beginning September. The F3DM is a plug-in hybrid which means that even though it is a hybrid, it can be recharged through a wall plug, thus you may never really need to start up its combustion engine if you use it for short trips.

BYD is becoming a big brand when it comes to green tech in China. It recently won a contract to supply fellow chinese automaker SAIC with lithium ion batteries. Its li-ion batteries are based on iron phosphate and are self-developed. BYD claims they can be recharged over 2,000 times and have an estimated lifespan of over 600,000km. Warren Buffet should definitely be happy about all of this – analysts estimate his Berkshire Hathaway’s investment in BYD has already made 430% in just under a year.

In Malaysia all that we have to encourage more efficient vehicles are the prospect of saving on road tax costs and a temporary rebate on hybrid vehicles under 2.0 litres in displacement. When the new NAP review is announced by the end of September this year, we will see if there is anything regarding green technology. There are currently only two hybrid cars on sale in Malaysia through official channels – the Honda Civic Hybrid and the Toyota Prius.

Most of you will be waiting for any indication of lower car prices but while MITI says import duties for ASEAN countries would be removed from January 1st 2010, it has hinted that we could potentially not see any kind of reduction in car prices that can make an impact in our buying experiences as vehicle prices are “subject to market forces which are influenced by factors such as the price of local and imported (CKD) components, forex, transportation cost, insurance and interest rates.”

VIDEO: Infiniti M’s 3D Projection Reveal

Infiniti M

One of the highlights of the Infiniti M‘s reveal at Pebble Beach that the Japanese company kept pimping before the launch was the fact that it was going to use an innovative 3D projection system in the unveiling ceremony. Of course those who weren’t there could not see this but fortunately Infiniti decided to record the whole thing so we could see what they were talking about exactly. The car seems to appear bit by bit, part by part, in a way that reminded me of the scenes in Hollow Man. Watch the video after the jump.

Air Asia rumoured to expand F1 involvement?

BMW F1

The Malay Mail has an insider scoop that Air Asia is considering expanding their involvement in F1 by “having their own team”. If this is true, it will probably happen only later as Air Asia is currently still in a 3-year sponsorship deal with the AT&T Williams F1 team as one of their sponsors as parts of their international brand-building efforts.

An overseas F1 news syndicator have linked Air Asia to the BMW Sauber F1 team as a potential purchaser, however Air Asia has stated that their interest in F1 is still AT&T Williams for now and they will continue sponsoring them. If Air Asia expands its role in F1 with a deeper involvement with BMW Sauber F1 it would mean a Malaysian sponsorship “tagteam” of sorts as as the team currently already has a Malaysian sponsor – Petronas.

Cute little turbocharged Alfa Romeo MiTo can be yours for RM153,888++

Alfa Romeo MiTo

Think small, expensive but remarkably charming small hatchbacks and only three cars will come to mind – the MINI, and more recently the Fiat 500 and the Alfa Romeo MiTo. As of today, all three are now available in Malaysia. The MiTo offers a much more affordable price compared to the MINI Cooper and Cooper S, retailing at RM153,888 OTR excluding insurance, registration and road tax.

The 3-door MiTo shares the same engine as the Fiat Bravo – a 1.4 litre turbocharged engine producing 155 horsepower, and in the MiTO it is mated to a 6-speed manual. It is the only transmission available in the car right now, so you’ll have to work your left leg a little if you want to cruise around town with style in this particular Italian baby. 0 to 100km/h takes 8 seconds, and the car is rated to drink only 6.5 litres of petrol per 100km traveled.

Alfa Romeo MiTo

There is a decent list of equipment including cruise control, auto clmate control, LED rear lamps, steering wheel audio, VDC with hill holder function (great for starting on a slope if you’re still rusty with the manual’s clutch), a 6-speaker audio system.

There is a little three-position switch near the gear lever which will alter the throttle response and steering assist for three driving environments – Dynamic, Normal and All Weather. This is called the Alfa Romeo DNA system. The MiTo is also equipped with the Q2 electronic limited slip differential, a grand total of 7 airbags including a driver’s kneebag, and finally the chassis is rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP.

Public viewing and test drives are available at the Auto ConneXion Alfa Romeo 3S Centre at Jalan 13/2 Petaling Jaya. More photos of the MiTo available after the jump.

Want a new set of Goodyear Duraplus tyres?

Goodyear DuraplusThe condition of your tyres are no small matter to fool around with – they are your vehicle’s sole contact point to the ground and whether your car will be able to retain grip during a corner or be able to tackle the volume of water on our Malaysian road’s tendency to become little shallow lakes very much depends on the condition of your tyres.

The condition of your tyres can also affect your car’s ability to stop in an emergency. The British Rubber Manufacturers Association did a study on the effects of tyre tread depth on stopping distances in the wet and the following are the results:

Stopping Distance Graph
Source

As you can see, stopping distances required increases dramatically at tread depths of below 3mm. I am not sure what the exact number is in Malaysia but the legal limit for tread depth in various countries are usually set at 1.6mm. But the deterioration of performance starts way above that legal limit!

But of course, times are bad and not many people can afford to change their tyres as often as they really should. So Goodyear wants to give out a set of Goodyear Duraplus tyres to someone who really needs a change of tyres.

Here’s how you can win your set of Goodyear Duraplus:

  1. Take a photo of your current tyres to show that you need a change of new tyres.
  2. Give me your best reason to change to a set of Goodyear Duraplus tyres!

Send me the photo, tyre size and reason to my email at paul@paultan.org. One lucky entry will be picked to receive a set of Duraplus tyres in his/her car’s tyre size. Remember to send them in quick, before the end of this month.

The new Goodyear DuraPlus was launched recently in Malaysia and the company claims it is able to achieve mileage as much as 100,000km. That sounds like good news for the budget-conscious consumer who just want to buy something, fit it on and forget about it for the next few years.

The Duraplus replaces the Goodyear GT3 in the Malaysian line-up. Of course you’d better make sure that Duraplus is available in the size that your car uses so here’s a table of all available sizes as well as their recommended retail price per tyre.

Peugeot RCZ sports car on sale in Spring 2010

Peugeot RCZ

Peugeot has unveiled full details on the new Peugeot RCZ 2+2 Coupe. Most people refer to this as a French take on the Audi TT, as it emulates the TT’s shape. If you notice the roof of the RCZ actually has some kind of recession in it in the middle, and Peugeot calls this a “double bubble” design.

Under the hood (at the front) is a version of the 1.6 litre BMW-PSA Prince engine, this time producing 200 horsepower at 5,800rpm, taking the car from 0 to 100km/h in 7.6 seconds thanks to its 255Nm of torque from 1,700rpm. That’s not a whole load of torque and 7.6 seconds isn’t exactly blistering speed, but because the RCZ is small with an interior thats designed to “wrap around” the driver cozily, the speeds might seem faster than they really are, so this will help add to the fun factor.

Peugeot RCZ

Of course less powerful engines are also available. A 156hp version of the 1.6 litre Prince engine is also available, and like the 200hp version it is mated to a 6-speed manual. But there will be a 6-speed auto coming soon in summer 2010 – a welcome addition to the Peugeot family as they’ve been making do with 4-speed automatics for a long time now, while BMW has been mating the Prince engine to 6-speed autos for a long time.

Of course there must be a diesel option – a 2.0 litre HDi FAP engine with 163hp, also mated to a 6-speed manual. This is the torqueiest engine option with 340Nm available at 2,000rpm. The diesel engine fuel consumption is rated at 52.3 mpg on the combined cycle.

Peugeot RCZ

The Peugoet RCZ rides on the same platform as the 308 and uses MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear. The platform has been modified to suit the RCZ’s sporty intentions – ride height has been lowered by 20mm, center of gravity lower by 40mm, front track widened by 54mm and rear track widened by 72mm. The 200hp engine version has an additional lower anti-roll bar to help with the handling. Peugeot did not use an electric power steering system on the RCZ – it sticks to a hydraulic system which usually offers better response.

The RCZ will go on sale in Spring 2010. You can probably expect Nasim to bring it in sometime in the future as a CBU model and in classic Nasim style, it will probably undercut the 2.0 TFSI Audi TT in terms of pricing, offering a nice alternative.

New Kia Venga set to debut at Frankfurt 2009

Kia Venga

The Kia No3 Concept has been translated into a production car. Presenting: the Kia Venga, a new B-segment MPV (not exactly an MPV in the three-row 7 seater sense but more of a tall hatchback) designed and built in Europe. The name Venga is derived from the Spanish verb “to come”, which in the language sounds like invitation to move from one spot to another. For some reason I find this amusing as it is similiar to the Tamil word “vange” which also means “come” :P

It looks small but the Kia Venga is actually bigger than a Hyundai i20 – its got a wheelbase of 2,615mm thats a whole lot longer compared to the i20′s 2,525mm wheelbase. The previous generation Kia Carens/Rondo had a wheelbase of 2560mm but with the latest generation (called the Citra II Rondo in Malaysia) it used the Optima’s platform and grew to a massive 2,700mm.

This definitely makes some space for a smaller MPV to be slotted in under the new Rondo. The Kia Venga is 4,068mm long and 1,600mm tall. Like most new Kia designs it looks pretty alright, nothing to hate about it, though I think that Schreyer grille isn’t really working that great on that Fiat Bravo-like nose. But the rest of the car is quite cute.

Kia Venga Interior

Kia claims the Kia Venga offers C-segment space in a B-segment footprint, and hopefully price. It will feature a 1.4 litre gasoline engine or a 1.6 litre turbodiesel engine at launch, putting out 75 PS and 115 PS respectively.

Both engines will be fitted standard with ISG (Idle Stop & Go) technology which auto-stops your car engine when your car stops, and restarts it automatically when it is time to move again, useful during traffic jams or stop lights. Optional is a tilt-and-slide all-glass panoramic roof.

The production Kia Venga will be shown to the public at the Frankfurt show in September, and more photos will probably be released then. For now, check out 4 initial photos released by Kia after the jump.

Lexus teases sketch of upcoming C-Premium

Lexus C-Premium
Click for enlarged image

It looks like Lexus is getting real serious about upping its presence in the European market. Here’s an official teaser sketch of the upcoming Lexus C-Premium hatchback, the first ever visual indication of how the new A3/1-Series competitor from Lexus will look like.

The new Lexus C-Premium is rumoured to be called the Lexus CT, since the Japanese luxury car maker trademarked that name not too long ago. The names trademarked were the CT 200h, the CT 300h and the CT 400h. The h suffix on all the model names seems to indicate this new hatchback might be hybrid-only.

Look after the jump for some renderings by resident “automotive manipulator” Theophilus Chin on how the new Lexus hatchback might look like.

Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder: drop-top V8 motoring

Spyker

Always wanted a Spyker C8 Aileron but wanted it to be a drop top? The boys at Spyker have probably heard your wishes – that’s why they’ve just introduced the new Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder. In the endine bay is the same 4.2 litre Audi V8 in the roofed version producing 400 horsepower and 480Nm of torque at 3,400rpm. Now that’s some massively aggressive tuning, as the standard Audi engine only puts out about 440Nm as standard, which already exceeds the magical 100Nm per litre of displacement figures thanks to the FSI direct injection. Looking at the numbers this is likely based on the version of the 4.2 V8 found in the Audi Q7 instead of the high-revving version in the Audi RS4 and Audi R8. This engine can be mated to either a Getrag 6-speed manual or a ZF 6-speed automatic. More photos available after the jump.

Tan Chong officially brings in GT-R… to Singapore

Nissan GT-R

After letting the grey importers milk the GT-R like crazy for a while (over 200 registered on the road so far), the Nissan GT-R is now officially in Singapore through official Nissan importer Tan Chong. The Singaporean GT-R goes for S$299,500 which is a tad pricier than the grey importer’s price tags which hover in the region of S$250k.

Now what does that mean for Malaysians? Will Tan Chong bring in the GT-R here officially too, complete with a proper manufacturer warranty? Hopefully yes, but if not, at least Malaysian owners will probably be able to settle any issues with their cars at an official GT-R-trained Nissan service center (Tan Chong Bukit Timah Road) in Singapore. The other benefit of being an official import is that the car’s menu systems are all in English and it does not have a speed limiter.

For now if you still want a Nissan sportscar with an official manufacturer warranty you can check out the recently launched Nissan 370Z. Only 0.1 litres difference in displacement but oh what a difference the two turbos and the all-wheel drive makes!
