Suzuki ramping up production in India – overtaking its Japanese factory production?

Japanese car manufacturers are streamlining their businesses to keep their heads in the profit-making top of the proverbial water. But it seems that Suzuki who is the 9th largest automotive manufacturer globally doesn’t have such problems. They have announced plans to pump up vehicle production to about 1.45 million vehicles in India, which is Asia’s third largest automobile market, by 2012.

This would mean that they would overtake production numbers at the company’s Japanese factories, which now stand at 1.4 million units annually. Growing production will be accomplished by investments of 2-4 billion yen (21 -43 million dollars) from its Indian arm, Maruti Suzuki, and will be used to upgrade two of its factories. This will increase its production capacity from 1 million units to 1.2 million for the time being.

Maruti Suzuki will also spend 33 billion yen (360 million dollars) to build a third plant which will see an output capacity of 250,000 units. This will be up and running by the mid part of 2012.

The move has been engineered amid Suzuki enjoying growing sales figures within the Indian subcontinent, largely due to inexpensive loans, a variety of new models and a recovery in demand. Models now available within the country include the Swift, the Swift DZire sedan, the A-Star and the SX4. Now you understand why Volkswagen wanted a piece of Suzuki?

The AMG variant will blow out an incredible 537hp from its 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8 engine while producing an astounding 800Nm of torque. The V12 bi-turbo engine will likely remain untouched, still producing 612hp and 1000Nm of torque.

The new additions to the Mercedes line up will make their official debut at this year’s Paris Motor Show in October.

Volkswagen planning estate version of Passat CC?

Click for enlarged image

For some reason Americans do not ilke wagons but they have no problem going around driving ‘crossovers’ which are essentially wagons with sloping rooflines that severely limit luggage area versatility. Which is why cars like the Honda Accord CrossTour, the Acura ZDX, the BMW 5-Series GT and the Toyota Venza were born.

Word is that Volkswagen wants to join in the party with what can be described as an estate version of the Passat CC. In typical Volkswagen speak it would be considered a ‘Passat CC Variant’. But it’s not a done deal yet, according to Autocar, the VW board is expected to vote on whether its a go or not in September this year.

F1 hopeful Epsilon fear the lack of development time

The race for Formula 1′s 13th grid slot not utilised by USF1 this season is not just a three-horse race between French team ART Grand Prix, Italian based Durango and the American Cypher Group as we previously believed, but a four-corner battle with Spanish team Epsilon Euskadi in the mix. The Basque country based outfit currently races in Le Mans and the World Series by Renault.

FIA is currently reviewing their applications, but we’re now in June and the longer they take, the less development time the successful bidder will have to develop a credible 2011 challenge.

Joan Villadelprat, boss of Epsilon fears exactly that. “I’m optimistic, but also a bit worried because the FIA announcement won’t come before the end of August,” he told Autosprint. “That means that, for the teams who get the nod, the time to start proper construction of the F1 car will be tiny. On top of that, it’s inevitable that we now find ourselves in the situation where we begin making investments without knowing whether we’ll actually be in next year’s championship,” he added.

But like the other aspirants, the Epsilon boss says their project will be sustainable in the long term. “We have long been in talks with big and important international companies who are interested in investing in us. One thing is for sure: our programme isn’t on a yearly basis. The budget I require must cover at least the first two seasons, 2011 and 2012. I repeat, that’s a minimum. An F1 team can’t be reasoning year by year.”

The man realises that F1 is a big money sport and is skeptical about Virgin’s target of keeping within a 40 million euro budget. “I feel that, in order to begin thinking of improving a team, you need no less than 100 million as a starting point. Of course, you can race with 40 million too, but without making any important development and at the risk of always being just an extra. And having to start over from zero every year.”

F-16 jet inspired tuning kit for BMW X6 by Status Design

The legendary F-16 Falcon fighter jet is synonymous with lightweight and innovative design, not to mention ammunition that can level a small city. Russian tuner Status Design has recently unveiled a tuning kit for the BMW X6 that follows the plane’s philosophy.

Given the designation SD F 16, the package comprises of a body kit that includes a front bumper, back bumper with carbon fibre diffuser, two-tone design with black roof, CF mirrors, window mouldings, back spoiler, front grille and 22-inch Hartge wheels.

The F-16 Falcon was originally designed as a day time fighter, but Status Design’s “F 16″ will have no problems with darkness thanks to LED angel eyes, a strip of LED driving lamps and Hella fog lamps that turn with the steering. It’s all meant to be easy to install, with no effect to ground clearance.

To match the decked out exterior, Status Design has increased power output from the X6 xDrive35i’s twin-turbo 3.0-litre engine to 380 hp (from 306 hp) by tuning the ECU along and adding a high flow air filter and sports exhaust. SD says that the F 16′s price is “pleasantly surprising”. Picture gallery after the jump.

Ssangyong seals long term Russian CKD deal in the midst of a sale process

The future of Ssangyong, Korea’s smallest car manufacturer known here as the maker of the Rexton, is not sorted yet as the company is up for sale under a court-led restructuring process. Six potential suitors, which includes Renault and India’s Mahindra & Mahindra, are waiting for the $500 million deal to go through. But that hasn’t stopped the company from sealing big deals abroad.

SsangYong Motors announced on Tuesday that they will be supplying Russian company Sollers with 156,100 knocked down kits in a CKD export deal right through to 2017, starting with 16,700 units next year. The arrivals will be assembled in Sollers’ factory in Vladivostok. It was not mentioned what model or models the figure included.

Sollers is a Russian company which also assembles Russian UAZ off-roaders, Fiat and Isuzu vehicles. The company pumps out about 300,000 automobiles a year and has an annual turnover that exceeds $2.48 billion.

QT Wildcat – the meanest road legal off-road vehicle

Diehard fans of a certain British car show will perhaps know the Bowler Wildcat, famous for its incredible off road performance. QT Services has taken over from Bowler and now run the manufacturing and development of the Wildcat brand, touted as the ‘meanest road legal off-road vehicle’

The new Wildcat range is showcased by their public-friendly model which is the 300STR. This model has a 4.0-litre Rover V8 engine with over 270 hp mated to a five speed synchromesh gearbox with a two speed transfer box. It goes from 0 to 96 km/h in just 5.8 seconds.

According to QT, the Wildcat has the potential of reaching three figure speeds over ‘unmade terrain’, which is quite a challenge for any off-road vehicle. The secret is supposed to come from the suppleness of its chassis and suspension along with experience from its Dakar Rally competition models that makes it easy to drive. The 300STR features a fully welded tubular chassis, 4WD, 5-point harnesses, heavy duty differentials and drive shafts, while still maintaining regular comforts such as air con, Bluetooth and iPod dock.

If you’ve got a thirst for something more extreme, there is the 400NSR and 500DKR models to quench it. The 400NSR is a full competition model designed for hill rallies and terrain events while the 500DKR is the completely tricked-out model for seasoned cross country rally competitors. These variants use a 4.0-litre petrol V8 with 275 hp and 406 Nm or a 3.0-litre TDV6 diesel with 245 hp/600 Nm, both from Jaguar.

QT Services boss Dave Marsh maintains that versatility of the chassis means that there is room for customising. “If you consider that the 300STR is essentially a two-seater, there are a number of options open to you and this first production 300STR has been specified with rear storage for the new owner’s golf clubs. We’d love to be there when he rocks up to the clubhouse and parks it next to the Astons and Mercedes! Definitely a head-turner,” said Marsh.

From Dakar to the golf club? Not bad! More pics after the jump.

24K gold Bugatti Veyron Diamond Limited Edition

This is the Bugatti Veyron Diamond Limited Edition. No, it’s not yet another special edition from the VW owned hypercar maker, but actually a miniature replica of the 1000 hp machine at a scale of 1:18. This 7kg king of scale models is made from 24 carat gold, platinum and 7.2ct single cut flawless diamonds.

The Diamond Limited Edition – crafted by Robert Gulpen of Munich and Stuart Hughes of Liverpool – will have a limited run of 3 units, and each costs two million pounds! This would be enough to buy two of the real cars, which I’m sure most of us will choose over a scale model – unless you already have the real thing!

It can’t be beaten in function by everybody’s Minichamps, so the bling Veyron comes with functioning doors, hood and steering. There will even be a detailed replica of that monstrous W16 engine when you lift its little gold plated hood. Rich or not, anyone would be able to appreciate the beauty in this design, or am I wrong?

Opel Astra Sport Tourer – same footprint, more load space

GM’s loss making Opel/Vauxhall arm was left disappointed after the German government rejected its request for 1.1 billion euros in loan guarantees, leaving Opel to hope on German states where its factories are located to provide financial assistance. But life goes on, and GM Europe has released official images and info on the Opel Astra Sports Tourer, which will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show and go on sale in November.

The Sports Tourer is the wagon version of the popular C-segment Astra hatchback, which has collected over 160,000 orders in six months. It’s an important car for Opel, as wagons traditionally account for about 25% of Astra sales in Europe, higher than the segment average of 17%.

Load volume can be easily adjusted between 500 and 1,550 litres via the FlexFold Rear Seat system, which allows each section of the 60/40 split-fold rear seatbacks to be lowered at the press of a button located in the side walls of the cargo area. A spring is electrically released, activating quick, remote seat folding. With the seatbacks down, the cargo load length is increased to 1,835 mm, 28 mm more than the current Astra wagon. Besides that, occupants enjoy 25 litres of extra storage space inside the cabin.

Opel says that this wagon offers the same level of comfort and agility as the hatchback. First, its footprint and 2,685 mm wheelbase is unchanged while the rear compound crank/Watt’s link suspension has been modified for higher load capabilities and better support during cornering. In addition, FlexRide adaptive suspension provides a choice between standard, sports and touring modes and Trailer Stability Assist counteracts the tail wind produced when lugging a caravan trailer.

Engine options include eight petrol and diesel units. New to the range are two 1.4-litre turbocharged petrols; a 120 bhp six-speed manual and a 140 bhp six-speed auto. Sure to be more popular that those is the 2.0 CDTi with 180 bhp and 380 Nm of torque. This diesel option comes with an overboost button and sips only 5.1 litres of fuel for every 100 km (19.6 km/l). All manual transmission cars have a gear shift indicator coaxing you to drive economically.

Formula 1 Korean Grand Prix: Construction on schedule

This year’s Formula 1 calendar has a new destination for our favourite traveling circus. The first ever Korean Grand Prix, the third last race of the season before Brazil and Abu Dhabi, is penciled for 24th October. Korea Auto Valley Operation (KAVO) has come out to assure that construction of the Korea International Circuit is on schedule for completion this summer.

At present, 80% of track is completed, and in July, the circuit will enter the final phase of the development – surfacing of the track. “Construction is on schedule for completion this summer, and we have encountered no obstacles whatsoever, either logistical or political. The Government, at both the central and provincial level, is fully supportive of the project, and the entire country looks forward to welcoming F1 to South Korea this autumn,” KAVO’s CEO Yung Cho Chung said.

Located in the South Jeolla region, 400 km from Seoul, the Yeongam circuit is in a rural location and KAVO plans to develop the area surrounding the circuit. A high-tech business park, residential and leisure facilities are part of the plans. The waterside circuit, like most newer tracks such as Sepang, has been designed by Hermann Tilke to be a good challenge for the drivers and to house 130,000 spectators. The 5.615 km F1 track has a smaller 3.045 km course built into it for less demanding events.
