Proton celebrates APRC title clean sweep, we’re told to expect a special edition “yellow” Satria Neo soon!

They’re not a football team, so no open top bus parade around the city, but Proton proudly paraded their multiple trophies gained from this season’s FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC). The six-leg championship ended in China earlier this month, where Alister McRae won the rally to clinch the Driver’s title from teammate Chris Atkinson.

That title was one of eight titles won by Proton in this season’s APRC – a clean sweep underlining total domination. The eight titles are the Overall FIA APRC Manufacturer’s title, FIA APRC Driver’s title, FIA APRC Teams Trophy, FIA Asia Cup Driver’s title and the FIA Pacific Cup Driver’s title. Those were won by the Satria Neo S2000s.

Proton’s Group N 1600cc 2WD Satria Neos won the Manufacturer’s title in the FIA APRC Rally Cup (2WD category), the FIA APRC Rally Cup Driver’s title and the FIA APRC Junior Cup Driver’s title. Karamjit SIngh, driving the Cusco prepared Neo, won all five events he entered in 2011.

By the way, this is Proton’s first APRC win after seven years, their previous three wins coming in 2001, 2002 and 2004. Proton returned for a full season last year, finishing second in the Manufacturer’s standings.

At this afternoon’s event, Proton MD Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin reminded all that while they’re happy with the trophy haul, their main agenda in joining motorsports is marketing and Proton’s in it to “race on Sunday and sell on Monday.” Proton says that events like the APRC provide the brand with enormous exposure, reaching out to an estimated audience of over 390 million viewers worldwide in 129 countries. “It will be a crime not to exploit the success of the Satria Neo in APRC,” Syed Zainal added.

The boss also hinted at a special edition (a special edition, not Special Edition) Satria Neo to commemorate the APRC victory. “Expect some exciting derivative of Neo, perhaps some special edition,” he said, adding later that a “yellow Neo” with “some of the DNA of the S2000″ could be coming out in Q1, 2012.

Could it be a Satria Neo R3 in the rally car’s signature yellow with matching interior accents? Or can we expect an even more powerful Neo with more serious kit? No harm in listing down your wish list, someone might be reading!

2013 Ford Escape debuts in LA – call it the Kuga too!

Ford has debuted the 2013 Ford Escape at the Los Angeles Auto Show – the SUV enters the North American market next year in both front-wheel and 4WD guise, with three four-cylinder powertrain choices to pick from – a normally-aspirated 2.5 litre as well as 2.0 and 1.6 litre EcoBoost versions.

The new Escape will also feature globally – it will be known as the Ford Kuga in Europe and China, with unique powertrains and features for those markets. Set to make its international debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the vehicle is slated to be introduced in China next spring.

In terms of outputs, the 2.5 litre NA unit will offer 168 hp and 226 Nm, while the 2.0 EcoBoost will have 237 hp and 338 Nm, and the 1.6 EcoBoost 173 hp and 240 Nm. All three engine choices are mated to a SelectShift Automatic six-speed, which for the EcoBoost mills are specially calibrated. The gearbox features revised gear ratios and a new torque converter for improved driving feel and smoother shifts.

The vehicle features more cargo volume behind the first and second rows than the outgoing Escape, and Ford says that it has driving dynamics that make the drive experience more engaging on-road, with a new Ford Intelligent 4WD System providing even better traction off-road. It’s also nearly 10% more aerodynamic than the current Escape, as well as 20% stiffer in terms of overall body structure.

Inside the cabin, improved materials and execution highlight the interior, and the list includes a soft-touch instrument panel, wrapped, padded and stitched door armrests and the elimination of exposed fasteners in the glove box and sun visor pivots, among others. Versatility in cargo carrying continues the roll – the car has an available two-position load floor, which can be configured to allow the choice of maximum luggage volume or a flat load floor.

Among the tech features is a hands-free power liftgate that allows quick and easy access to the cargo hold. The liftgate is enabled by motion technology – a gentle kicking motion under the centre of the rear bumper activates, unlocks and raises the liftgate when the driver has the Escape key fob, allowing quick and easy access to the cargo area without needing to set down packages or dig out keys. The same process closes the hatch.

Elsewhere, there’s a panorama Vista sunroof, active park assist, a sensor-based Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert, SYNC with MyFord Touch in the mix, as well as an enhanced Personal Safety System with new safety belt technologies and seven airbags.

A host of exterior colours abound, led by Ginger Ale, an earthy metallic tone. There’s also Ruby Red, White Platinum Tricoat, Frosted Glass Metallic, Deep Impact Blue and Kodiak Brown, along with Tuxedo Black, Sterling Gray Metallic, Ingot Silver Metallic and Oxford White.

Ford Mustang Boss 302: a homage to the ’70s legend

‘Tis the season to be draped in yellow – you’ve seen the Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee and the Challenger SRT8 392 Yellow Jacket, and now, here’s the 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302. The edition – and the Boss Laguna Seca – features a heritage-inspired School Bus Yellow paint job that honours Parnelli Jones’ 1970 Trans-Am championship car prepared by Bud Moore.

The Boss 302 also features a new, reflective hockey stick graphics package, which gets its first modern application on a production car, the company says. The reflective stripes – which follows the classic hockey stick motif by going over the fender and extending down the body panel – come to life when lights hit them, similar to how they did in 1970 on the Mustang Boss 302.

As for the Boss Laguna Seca, this one delivers race-ready suspension, aerodynamic details and a removed rear seat, and features new Sterling Gray accents and black paint offerings, complemented by hockey stick stripes and a grey interior rear cross-brace.

Grey is also to be found on the front grille, mirror caps and rear pedestal spoiler on this one, while Laguna Seca rear badging and unique two-tone gray and silver wheels round out the version’s exterior accents.

Compared to the base Mustang, the front end of the Boss offers a more powerful design with a more prominent grille, as well as a more powerful splitter and functional hood extractors. The car also gets new signature lighting, with standard HID headlamps and LED-surround taillamps.

Elsewhere, the grille features removable covers where fog lamps would be – for improved cooling on track days, the covers can be easily removed with a screwdriver. Additionally, the rear end features a high-gloss black panel that connects the taillamps, which have a smoked finish.

The 444 hp and 515 Nm Boss has a race-inspired clutch, with upgraded friction materials, and a short-throw, close-ratio six-speed manual. Power is delivered to a 3.73-ratio rear axle using carbon fibre plates in the LSD to improve handling and longevity, though an optional torque-sensing (Torsen) LSD is available, coupled with Recaro front seats.

The Boss also gets a revised suspension, with adjustable shocks and struts, higher-rate coil springs all around, stiffer suspension bushings and a larger-diameter rear stabiliser bar, and the Boss models are lowered by 11 mm in front and 1 mmm at the rear compared to the Mustang GT.

In line with the suspension upgrades, the Boss 302 wears lightweight 19-inch black alloy racing wheels in staggered widths, wrapped by Pirelli PZero 255/40 front and 285/35 rear rubbers. Four-piston Brembo calipers and 14-inch vented rotors up front and Boss-specific high-performance pads at the rear round off the items list.

Thai floods: Water being drained from industrial parks

In Thailand, efforts to clear the flood waters in industrial parks that were inundated last month are underway. Reports say that water is currently being pumped out of four of the seven affected industrial parks.

The floods have impacted around 450 Japanese companies, or approximately a third of all Japanese manufacturers with an operations base in Thailand. Now, with the waters receding, many are preparing to restart plants that had to be closed down due to the flooding.

At Rojana Industrial Park in Ayutthaya, the draining exercise began on November 7, and the flood barrier is no longer submerged – around a million tons of water is being pumped out daily, the reports add, with an early December forecast for the completion of the process being bandied about.

While it’ll take time to clean up, repair and restore the necessary infrastructure as well as replace production equipment, the progress currently being made on the drainage has offered companies an anticipation of resumption of production. Among the companies based in Rojana is Honda, as well as camera maker Nikon. As of the beginning of the week, Honda Thailand issued a statement that it did not have a clear outlook for when production will resume.

Meanwhile, despite the fact that they were hit hard by the severe flooding, Japanese manufacturers appear determined to maintain Thailand’s status as a key export base, further reports say. The country remains important for Japanese firms, which are expanding production abroad to deal with a strong yen and diversify locations in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake earlier in the year.

Thailand’s appeal, the reports state, lies in the fact that more materials and parts suppliers are concentrated there than in any other country in the region. And speed too is part of the parcel, it might seem – Toyota’s Thai factory is among the fastest of the company’s 50 or so global assembly plants, able to roll out a vehicle every 56 seconds.

Production of 1-tonne pickup trucks is also firmly entrenched in the Kingdom, with being exported to markets globally. “We have no intention of shifting production to another country,” Mitsubishi Motors Corporation president Osamu Masuko said. “We’ll prepare for natural disasters by increasing the percentage of parts procured from neighboring countries,” he added. MMC has resumed operations at its Thai plant, after a one-month suspension.

Tokyo 2011: Production Toyota Prius c to make debut

Next year, Toyota’s popular Prius hybrid range will double in size. From the current hatchback and Prius v, Toyota will add on the plug in version of the Prius and this, the Prius c. Shown as a concept earlier this year in Detroit, the Prius c will be unveiled in production form at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show.

At less than four metres long, this will be a more compact and cheaper car than the standard Prius. Tagged as a subcompact in the US, the Prius c will be an entry point to Toyota hybrid ownership. It’s 3,995 mm long, 1,695mm wide and 1,445 mm tall, with a 2,550 mm wheelbase. The wheelbase is identical in length with the Vios, as is the width, so it should be quite a roomy hatch.

With the brand’s proven Hybrid Synergy Drive tech – a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor in this case – the Prius c achieves 35-40 kilometres per litre in the official Japanese test cycle. Toyota USA says that it can do 21.3 km/l (50 mpg) in the city, the highest city mpg of any non-plug-in vehicle.

The Prius c is bound to be quite well equipped despite its entry level positioning. Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, steering-wheel audio controls and nine airbags will be among the standard features in the US spec car.

Toyota’s Entune multimedia system will be optional. Entune links up with your mobile smartphone for fully integrated access to navigation, entertainment, and information services. It allows users to connect with popular apps (in the US) such as Bing, OpenTable.com, and movietickets.com.

The Prius c will be called Aqua in Japan.

Govt gives oil companies deadline extension to produce Euro 4 grade diesel – they now have until 2014

It was supposed to be 2012, but it looks like we won’t be getting Euro 4 or Euro 5 grade diesel next year after all. This is because the government has given petroleum companies a two-year extension to the original deadline to offer better quality fuel. They now have until 2014 to roll out Euro 4 fuel.

This was revealed by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, who said that the oil companies requested for a later date, claiming that they weren’t ready to upgrade. “The industry has, however requested for an extension, saying that it was not ready to make the change.

“Although the government has agreed to the extension, the delay is ultimately hindering the progress of diesel usage in the country. In Europe, about 70% of new vehicles run on the higher grades of diesel,” Kong added, reminding us of what we’re missing out.

So it looks like Malaysia will continue to remain as a laggard in fuel quality, even as our neighbours and supposedly less sophisticated markets like India and China move up to better stuff. As the world moves on, it will become even harder and not worthwhile for manufacturers to “custom make” and dumb down engines to suit our Euro 2M pumps. Sad news, for both car enthusiasts and the environment.

Toyota FCV-R – bringing hydrogen a step closer to reality

Toyota’s third concept for Tokyo will be the FCV-R (Fuel Cell Vehicle – Reality & Revolution), which it says is a practical, family-sized vehicle fuelled by hydrogen. The 4.7 metre-long sedan features seating for four and impressive luggage space, made possible by housing the fuel-cell beneath the specially-designed bodyshell.

Minimal details about it, but Toyota says the fuel cell stack, which includes a 70 MPa high-pressure hydrogen tank, is capable of giving the FCV-R a cruising range of approximately 692 km, measured under a Japanese JC08 test cycle. The company adds it expects to commercially launch a fuel cell vehicle by 2015.

Dacia Lodgy Glace: upcoming MPV gets ice-racer preview

It’s called the Dacia Lodgy Glace, and it’s set to compete in the Trophée Andros 2011/2012 ice-racing series, which kicks off next month with the first round in Val Thorens, France.

Two Lodgy Glace entries are set to be on the grid for every race, with Alain Prost behind the wheel of one, and the other shared by his son, Nicolas Prost and Evens Stievenart. The Trophée Andros cars are custom-prepared by Tork Engineering (design, production, assembly) and Sodemo (engine), with technical expertise provided by Renault Sport Technologies.

Of note is the fact that the ice-racer MPV essentially gives an insight into the new family road car that’s set to make its debut in Geneva next March – one can assume that the road-going compact people mover will bear the same name, minus the Glace suffix, as Lodgy as that one sounds. Then again, the Duster wasn’t exactly conventional, with its name conjuring up images of an agricultural aircraft filled to the gills with DDT or a vacuum-cleaner to the uninformed.

Great Wall Motor forms JVs with Bosch and BorgWarner

Great Wall Motor, the latest automotive brand from China to enter Malaysia, announced that it has formed joint ventures with America’s BorgWarner and Robert Bosch GmbH of Germany to engineer key components. Both companies already supply parts to GWM.

The partnership with Bosch will develop engine management systems and brakes. In 2006, Bosch started supplying common rail fuel systems for diesel engines used in Great Wall’s Haval SUV and Wingle pickup, both of which are available in Malaysia.

The JV with BorgWarner is to design timing chains for transmissions and torque management systems. By the end of this year, Great Wall’s Haval H6 will be equipped with BorgWarner’s torque management system. BorgWarner has produced parts for Great Wall since 2005, supplying the privately owned carmaker with turbochargers and transfer cases.

Tokyo 2011: Toyota FT-EV goes III, and the Fun-Vii concept is set to dazzle with its ‘far out’ approach

The Tokyo stampede is well and truly on now, with Toyota being the next to announce its debutants at the show. The company will be showcasing three concepts, led by the FT-EV III concept, which offers a take of how the near future will shape up.

The third incarnation of the Future Toyota – Electric Vehicle is based on the iQ, and the company says it plans to introduce a production version of the four-seater concept sometime in 2012. The EV III’s lithium-ion battery offers it an esitmated cruising range of 105 km, a slight improvement over the 90 km offered by its FT-EV II predecessor, which was a show debutant in 2009.

Also set for its world premiere will be the Fun-Vii, or Fun-Vehicle interactive internet, to give the concept its full designation. The company isn’t saying anything about this one, save that it’s pretty ‘far out’ as things go and that the design heralds Toyota’s vision of a future where people, cars and society are linked. Whatever it is, there’s a lot of flower power imagery in this one, quite literally!
