The entry level MPV market is really heating up, thanks to carmakers eager to cash in on the success of cars like the Toyota Avanza and the Nissan Grand Livina in growth markets. The latest car maker to announce a new compact 7-seater MPV is General Motors, and it will be manufacturing the new Chevrolet Spin MPV at it’s 11 hectare Bekasi manufacturing facility in West Java from early 2012 at an investment of US$150 million, ultimately creating 800 new jobs.
The Chevrolet Spin will be offered in both 5 seater and 7 seater versions, with the flexibility of car-like handling and good cargo carrying capability, combining good fuel economy with muscular SUV-like looks. GM Southeast Asia president Martin Apfel also revealed that the Chevrolet Spin will be the only vehicle in its class to offer a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Although all that GM has officially released is the shadowy sketch of the Chevrolet Spin’s side profile, NoticiasAutomotivas has featured this image of a white MPV that features current Chevrolet design cues on the front end, although the car’s make logo has been taped up.
Other than the ASEAN market, we expect the Spin to be introduced in markets like India as well. Other new rivals to the segment as cars such as the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.
