GM Europe is set to introduce the Opel Insignia Country Tourer (Vauxhall Insignia Country Tourer in the UK) in the continent late this year, after a debut at the Frankfurt motor show. The Country Tourer is based on the Insignia Sports Tourer wagon, but has AWD, higher ground clearance and tougher SUV-inspired styling.
Compared to the standard wagon, the Country Tourer gets silver protective panels at both front and rear ends plus anthracite-coloured protective cladding on the side sills and lower body, which gives the wheel-arches a more pronounced, flared look.
Two 2.0 litre turbodiesels will be available – a BiTurbo CDTi (195 PS and 400 Nm) and a CDTi with 165 PS and 380 Nm. A choice of six-speed manual or a low-friction, six-speed automatic transmission is available on the 165 PS engine. The BiTurbo is available in automatic only.
The AWD drivetrain incorporates a clutch operating on Haldex principles, and an electronic LSD. It constantly adapts to the prevailing road conditions, and can vary torque distribution seamlessly between the front and rear axles, as well as between the rear wheels, even before a wheel begins to slip. Off road, the Insignia Country Tourer benefits from larger tyres and a 20 mm raised ride height.
