Opel Monza concept to debut at Frankfurt show

Opel Monza concept

The return of an old name points towards the future. This is the Vauxhall/Opel Monza concept that will make its world premiere at the Frankfurt show in September. It’s said to offer a preview of the next generation of Vauxhall/Opel’s design philosophy.

Vauxhall says the concept marries “sculptural artistry” and “technical precision” to result in “lithe athleticism, rather than pure muscle power.” We don’t really speak design, but that is one very in-your-face face and we can’t wait to see the rest of it.

The carmaker draws attention to the vehicle’s low stance, its prominent bonnet creases and the chrome grille bar carrying the Griffin logo which features winglets at both ends. Check out those huge intakes under the slim headlamps – Vauxhall calls them ‘blades,’ and we can see why.

Opel Monza

The Vauxhall Royale/Opel Monza of the late-1970s was a rakish fastback coupe based on the Vauxhall/Opel Senator sedan, and according to the carmaker, some design elements of the old car, including the “large, glazed surfaces and low belt line,” will translate to the concept.

No technical details have been released, but there’ll be “ground-breaking technologies for infotainment and connectivity,” as well as “outstanding efficiency through its architecture and use of materials.”

While most dream of the future, Jonathan Tan dreams of the past, although he's never been there. Fantasises much too often about cruising down Treacher Road (Jalan Sultan Ismail) in a Triumph Stag that actually works, and hopes this stint here will snap him back to present reality.

Too few opel cars marketed in Malaysia. IIRC opel rekord, gemini, zafira…

    Anyone can recall more?

None right now. I don’t think anyone picked up the brand? And GM chose to use Chevrolet to market Daewoos instead… I’d rather have a German budget brand instead.

Also doesn’t that face look a bit like the new Mazda family face? Not that that is a bad thing…

  • At first glance, I thought it was some new Mazda concept.

Sadly Proton’s design philosophy severely lacking direction and at least 15 years behind global design trend…
