A couple of Japanese companies have developed a car with another alternative fuel source for power – the car has an electric motor that can be powered by a standard gas canister used for portable cooking stoves. The two-seater vehicle, which is likely to prove useful in emergencies when the supply of petrol is disrupted, has been certified as safe by the Japanese government.
According to the Nikkei, the two companies – electronic parts maker Kondo Electric and battery testing systems manufacturer Toyo System, both from Fukushima prefecture – plan to sell the car to municipalities and companies by early as next year.
The car’s gasoline engine and fuel tank has been replaced by system comprising an electric motor, gas-fired generator and lead-acid battery. The parts will be made by companies in the area, and the car is to be assembled by local auto maintenance companies in a move that is aimed at contributing to the region’s economic recovery, the report adds.
In terms of performance, the car is able to go about 20 km on a single canister at a constant speed of 40 km/h, with only the driver as its only payload. As for the battery, it can be charged in five hours via a standard household outlet, and offers a range of around 10 km with the same operating parameters. The companies plan to price the cars at about 1.3 million yen (RM41,790), including parts and installation.
